Chrono counts the hours, minutes and seconds in an unexpected manner. The chronograph dials are simply used as a graphic together with one white marker on a disk that rotates to count the hours. The minute hand is replaced by a single golden marker that sits amongst a rotating outer ring of white minute and hour markers. A long white ticker hand counts the seconds, completing the time-telling elements of the Chrono watch. Hong Kong-based designer Michael Young talks about his MY03 Hacker watch, designed for watch brand ODM and available from Dezeen Watch Store, in this movie filmed by Dezeen.

MY03 Hacker was inspired by “old parts for aircraft in the 1950s,” explains Young in the movie. “Rather than be retrospective with this watch I wanted to capture the beauty of that era of engineering but bring it forward,” he says.

The small circle on the face hides the watch’s Japanese movement and is also raised a couple of millimetres above the glass to prevent scratching. “It’s very much a workwear watch,” he adds.

“In Asia, particularly, leather watch straps are very difficult to wear because of the humidity,” says Young, explaining that the watch’s polyurethane strap gives the product a more global appeal.

The MY03 Hacker is available now from Dezeen Watch Store in various colours, including the gold version worn by Young in the movie.

Dezeen Watch Store: this limited-edition watch designed by London brand Mr Jones Watches tells time using coloured dots on a 24 hour mechanism. This unusual watch has two circular markers that represent the minutes and hours. The hour marker is cut out from a ring covering the edge of the face, which rotates to reveal brightly coloured circles below.

These are set out in a regular six-hour pattern. The colour yellow will appear every six hours at 2pm, 8pm, 2am and 8am. The gold minute marker runs at the usual speed, rotating inside the hour circle

The watch is packaged in a illustrated box by artist Fanny Shorter. Inspired by the 24-hour mechanism, the artwork shows the life cycle of a mayfly, which lasts only 24 hours.

Competition: Dezeen is giving readers the chance to win one of five limited-edition VOID watches and matching scarves by fashion brand True Faith (+ slideshow).

True Faith co-founder Patrick Kim-Gustafsson has created two colourful, geometric patterns that are printed onto VOID VO3B watch faces and squares of cotton fabric to make scarves.

Named after the songs that inspired their design, the Kaobang and Bryllyant watches have calf leather straps rather than the V03B’s usual nylon band, and only 300 of each watch have been made.

The scarves are available in two sizes, with the larger shawl measuring 135-square-centimetres.

The smaller 35-square-centimetre version, to be worn as a pocket square or cravat, can be won as part of this competition.
