Stop Motion Sculpture

The Bandolier Bag

The two-sided alternative to bulky messenger bags

bandolier-bag-skate.jpg bandolier-bag-bike.jpg

Conscious of the need for a midsize alternative to the often oversized and always cumbersome messenger bag, the creative minds at SSCY have come up with the Bandolier, a dual-compartment bag that allows quick and easy access to all pockets and pouches without slowing you down. The sling-style design fits over the shoulder like most messenger bags do, but a swift tug pulls the back to front or vice versa.

Bandolier-bag-1.jpg

Another example of the bag’s intelligent design, a diagonal pleat expands to jam more in the bag that you may think. To keep the load balanced, straps cinch tight to the body, making it ideal for biking, skating, or really any activity with lots of momentum change. The simple feature keeps the Bandolier’s weight from shifting unexpectedly and throwing the wearer off balance—a common issue with heavy backpacks and messenger bags.

bandolier-bag-3.jpg

Constructed using tough 600 x 300 denier nylon backed with vinyl for water resistance, the Bandolier bag offers ample room and protection for everyday necessities. Combined with anatomical design, it’s perfect for light days on the road when you just can’t leave your phone, camera, notebook or iPad at home.

bandolier-bag-2.jpg

Proudly made in Brooklyn like all SSCY products, the Bandolier is now available through a few local NYC retailers and online at SSCY. Make sure to keep an eye on head designer S.C. Yuan and his design team. Word is they’re already working on a second innovative bag to address further needs of the cycling community .

The Utility Shower Curtain

Wintercheck Factory’s space-saving take on a bathroom staple
wintercheck-shower2.jpg

Brooklyn’s Wintercheck Factory has made a name for itself by updating everything from sunglasses to swimsuits with their brand of locally-made and highly-functional chic. The latest to get the Wintercheck treatment is the humble shower curtain. Like all the design studio’s products, the simple yet intelligent concept improves on a standard necessity with a few key design features. This clever solution to cluttered shower floors has interior pockets large enough to stow eight shampoo and conditioner bottles in self-draining pockets, as well as a razor and toothbrush. On the exterior, two loops on either end of the curtain are perfect for hanging your towel to save even more space.

wintercheck-shower1.jpg

Taking into consideration the small and often windowless bathrooms that plague NYC apartments, Wintercheck constructed the shower curtain from machine washable nylon, making it great for any unventilated bathrooms where mold and mildew thrive and one less thing you have to routinely replace.

Swing on over to Wintercheck Factory’s online store where the utility shower curtain (available in five colors) sells for $48.

BNO Design

Benjamin Noriega-Ortiz marries comfort and beauty in interior design

benno1.jpg benno2.jpg

Benjamin Noriega-Ortiz’ personality is so effervescent it seemed to trail behind him recently when, dressed in floral Doc Martens and a straw hat, he led a group of journalists on a detailed tour of the Mondrian SoHo, his latest and third installment for the luxury hotel brand. Greeting each hotel employee he came across with a genuine smile, Noriega-Ortiz’ warmth and generosity spills over, coming through in the interiors he designs as well. In the case of the NYC location, the industry vet took a more whimsical approach than the sober-hued Los Angeles and Scottsdale properties. Rooms splashed in blue paint and fantastical furniture inspired by John Cocteau’s highly-visual film “La Belle et Le Bête” give the high rise’s interiors a sense of enchantment.

To lend even more magic to the atmosphere, Noriega Ortiz also custom designed over 60 pieces of furniture. In part because furniture provenance bores him, the designer (who holds Masters degrees in both architecture and urban design) prefers to design his own whenever he can.

benno3.jpg benno4.jpg

Treating his own home as a place for experimentation, when it comes to clients Noriega-Ortiz bases his decisions on intuition and years of experience, studying the location to start generating ideas about what the experience should be like. “I develop a storyline that guides the design,” he explains. “It’s kind of like a script for a movie.” Once he’s settled on plot, color comes next to set the mood.

benno5.jpg benno6.jpg

While the Puerto Rican-born designer feels color is extremely important in making a space feel theatrical—such as the Mondrian Soho’s seductive French blue—sometimes the absence of color elevates interiors into “living works of art.” Treating each space as a painting, Noriega-Ortiz says he creates “backgrounds for life to flourish in” and they are not the star, but that “the entire environment, which includes the user, is art.”

benno7.jpg

Whether designing Lenny Kravitz’s downtown pad or swanky Parisian boutiques, Noriega-Ortiz prefers to work within a compact urban environment, and tends to leave his signature touch in the form of feathers. Passing by one of his feather lamps on the tour with a giggle, he later offered, “I love the way they move with the air as you walk by, it makes me smile. I use them almost exclusively with lighting because light travels so smoothly through the material.”

benno8.jpg benno9.jpg

The feathers are also a spot-on metaphor for Noriega-Ortiz; calm and breezy, functional yet playful, he continues to surprise clients and guests with his surreal environments. His real talent could be simply summarized in his explanation of his design background, “In architecture you learn to create and design an object; in urban design you create and design a space (the void) and the textures around it. That is why the combination of the two really becomes interior design.”

Chicken Co-Op

Luxury living for the urban hen
chicken5.jpg

The team at NYC’s multi-disciplinary studio RAAD have re-invented the urban chicken residence. The Chicken Co-Op is a multi-level living space for city dwelling poultry.

chickencoop.jpg

Designed from the bottom up to be at “the forefront of sustainability,” the Co-Ops are composed of acrylic sheets and exterior grade plywood, which separates the three floors—each catering to a specific lifestyle. The ground floor comprises the “Run Area,” a general living space where the tenants can exercise and interact. This is underneath an open mezzanine that leads up to the “Egg Lounge,” a perching area where the chickens can roost (and potentially romance) in the evenings before retiring to one of four private luxury spaces that also act as egg collection stations. All of these features are cleverly presented in a modern real estate style brochure

chicken4.jpg

In addition to providing some happy hens with great views and loft-like living, the Co-Op is also designed for easy interaction. The main living space slides out for easy cleaning and each nesting area has a back panel that opens for convenient early morning egg collection. The space also includes a storage closet for feed and bedding supplies, and uses passive heating methods—including a solar powered fan for cooling down the coop during hotter months.

chickencoop-10.jpg

With floor plans better than some NYC apartments, the Chicken Co-Op provides a well-designed solution for intrepid urbanites who want farm fresh eggs. You can purchase your own feathered-friend highrise from the online store for $3,500.

Simple Garden

Start home gardens right with a foolproof kit for cultivating plants

simplegarden1.jpg simplegarden2.jpg

Do you long for homegrown tomatoes but lack the space and green thumb? Fertile Earth has a solution. Their Simple Garden Starter Kit, devised in collaboration with the product designers at Provo, UT studio Rocketship, introduces an idiot-proof set-up to home gardening, whether urban or suburban.

simplegarden3.jpg

The 2010 IDEA-winner comes with everything but water, including a special blend of organic planting soil, seed packets, a planting template, a planting stick and a guide to cultivating hearty crops. But the container design is key too, boosting plant growth by improving air flow, water circulation and nutrient absorption.

simplegarden4.jpg simplegarden5.jpg

To make at-home gardens even easier, Fertile Earth makes LiteStik and WaterStik, two clever production aids. WaterStik detects moisture in the soil, letting you know whether it’s time to water or you’ve watered too much with a multicolored LED, while LiteStik also uses LED technology to supplement natural light.

simplegarden6.jpg

The Kit ($30), Junior Herb Garden ($15), LiteStik ($30) and WaterStik ($16) all sell online from Simple Garden.

Undpartner

Three inventive bike accessories that double as urban furniture
Undpartner4.jpg

Spotted at Salone Satellite, the work of the Austrian duo
Undpartner
aims to not just design a few bike accessories but to reinvent urban experiences. As Barbara Gollackner and Michael Walder say, “Undpartner is ready to reconquer public space: city residents are being given the opportunity to reconquer room for communication and create a spot for everyday living with wear-it-yourself furniture.”

UndpartnerParasit8.jpg
UndpartnerParasit5.jpg

The Parasite seat can be worn directly on the body, but can also hang wherever there’s a pole, a door or a traffic sign.

UndpartnerSuperFrancesco10.jpg

Super Francesco gives bike riders the possibility to easily create public seating; with one click it can be removed from the bike and laid on the floor.

UndpartnerElliot6.jpg
