Summer City Bicycles

Five bikes for touring town

Midsummer may very well be the season of the bicycle. With a steady schedule of backyard BBQs, concerts in the park, afternoons at the beach and general meandering about, it’s crucial to have the proper warm-weather transportation. To accommodate such adventures we’ve compiled a short selection of city-ready bicycles, all under $800.

Heritage-Daisy.jpg

Heritage Bicycles

Handmade with durable American steel in Chicago, Daisy is a beefy rig that’s likely to put up with more than a bit of abuse. The unisex bike combines the classic women’s step-through and men’s diamond frame designs with a coaster brake for a timeless aesthetic. Further enhancing its appeal to all shapes, sizes and sexes, Daisy comes in two sizes as a single-, three- or seven-speed and can be outfitted with multiple fender options. Find it at Heritage exclusively for $695—an essentially unbeatable price for a domestic-made bike.

Baltic-Greta.jpg

Erenpreiss

Brought back to life through European import company Baltic Bicycle Company, Latvian manufacturer Erenpreiss and their classic women’s bike Greta find themselves in production once again after being shut down during WWII. Unlike most retro-inspired bicycles Greta is lightweight and efficient—the practical single speed, chain guard and coaster brake make for a hassle-free ride requiring minimal maintenance. To learn more about the history behind Erenpreiss and to find one for yourself visit Baltic Bicycle Co. where Greta is available for £375.

Playdate-.jpg

Playdate

The one-of-a-kind city cruiser Cherry Darlin’ fuses old school looks, sized-down frames for maneuverability and giant sweeping bars for a relaxed riding position. An East Coast High-Rider as Playdate calls it, the curious style makes for a mellow ride suitable more for weekend rides than hardcore commuting. If the “standard” design isn’t unique enough for you, Playdate offers customization across every component from saddles, grips and pedals to bells, cranks and even chains. Readily available in NYC, the Cherry Darlin’ is also available online from Playdate for $650.

GT-Meatball.jpg

GT

The stealth Meatball takes the ultra-sleek aesthetics of a track bike and subtly slips in a two speed, automatic shifting internally geared hub and coaster brake. Set to drop from GT towards the end of summer, it’s the clever, almost cheeky combination of leisurely gearing hidden behind an aggressive looking track frame that really has us excited for this bike. Plus, with horizontal dropouts, all you have to do is drop in a fixed cog rear wheel if you want to give it a proper try. Look to GT in October, when the Meatball will sell for $780.

Tern-Joe-Folded.jpg Tern-Joe.jpg
Tern

Let’s face it, it’s difficult to make a folding bike appealing when the market is flooded with perfectly minimalist track bikes and historically accurate cruisers. But Tern’s Joe makes a sound case for such a model by blending function with solid design. With wider tires to tackle cobblestones and weather-beaten paths, a “doubletruss” rear frame for stiffness and 24 speeds, the utilitarian bike can tackle most commutes while allowing the option of being packed up for the train or bus instead. Meanwhile, the improved four-bar joint ensures your bike remains in one piece even on the roughest rides. The Joe sells for $650. See Tern directly for dealer locations.

Cadot and Materialiste

Elegant vests for wearing when on the move
cwm2.jpg

Urban clothing brand Cadot and renowned men’s site Materialiste recently joined forces to create a limited-edition vest celebrating Parisian style and identity. With only 50 of these available, the collaboration serves as the perfect example of exclusive amazing style, elegance and craftsmanship.

The vest, based on Cadot’s original design concept, is well-padded, sleeveless and made from high-quality yarn, leaving motorcyclists and flaneurs with the perfect body temperature while ensuring ease of movement and elegance. To reinforce their meticulous design, each vest comes wrapped in a specially made pouch, individually numbered from one to 50.

Materialiste’s signature comes through in the lining’s striped red-white-and-blue colorway, made from vintage shirt fabric. The essence of Parisian style also shows in intricate design features such as the cross-stitched epaulettes, silkscreen-printed bronze snap fasteners and a breast pocket. An interior button pocket designed for smartphones also has slot for headphone wires.

The product of conversations between Guillaume Cadot and the founders of Materialiste since they met in 2007, the end result reflects a natural and effortless partnership. They are now available at Cadot and Materialiste for €250.

Sling Bag

Topo Designs’ clean one-strap backpack for comfier commuting

Sling-Bag-1.jpg Sling-Bag-2.jpg

Topo Designs‘ newest addition to their line of heritage-inspired bags, the sling bag, has a slim profile designed for ease of use during daily commutes. The single shoulder strap handily slips on and off when you need it, while a small stabilizer strap keeps the bag stable while wearing it messenger-style.

topo-sling-back.jpgtopo-sling-inside.jpg

Functionally speaking, leather lash tabs and seatbelt webbing pull tabs on the back are ideal for clipping on a bike light or securing excess gear—and we dig the traditional look of them. Three small interior compartments and a larger padded sleeve for iPads or slim laptops have the same minimalist feel that defines the bag’s outer shell.

Topo-black-bag.jpg topo-design-3.jpg

To encourage ecologically-sound production techniques and promote local the economy, Topo Design handmakes all their bags in a LEED certified building in Colorado. The sling bag comes in six rad colors, selling online through Topo Designs’ webshop for a manageable $98.

Paul Budnitz Bicycles

Titanium city bikes from the founder of Kidrobot
Paul-B-one-alone.jpg

Kidrobot founder Paul Budnitz always has something new up his sleeve—Swatch watches being the latest cult object to which he’s applied his winning pop culture formula. But his newest project takes the entrepreneur in a direction pretty much free of all the saturated colors and vector graphics of Kidrobot. Launching today, Paul Budnitz Bicycles is his answer to the bike phenomenon. Disappointed with the offerings of the commuter market, Budnitz saw the need for a well-made, comfortable bicycle designed specifically for the design-conscious rider. Aiming to fill this gap, the all-titanium bikes have clean, sinuous lines and superior components, also chosen with an eye for looks.

Paul-B-chain-1.jpg

One of the top American frame builders (“arguably the top Titanium frame maker in the world,” says Budnitz), Lynskey Performance, custom fabricates each piece by piece—from frame and fork to stem and bars. The cantilever frame absorbs more shock than traditional frames and titanium won’t rust or corrode. When the bikes get to Colorado, builders outfit each bike with a carbon Gates belt (to keep you clean and clear of chain problems), along with the finest top-end components from the like of Chris King and Phil Wood.

“Most high-end bicycle parts are actually pretty ugly,” Budnitz explains. “I was inspired by classic Aston Martins and ’80s-era Maseratis,” emphasizing his goal to create bikes that look timeless.

Paul-B-one-1.jpg

No.1, an unbelievably lightweight commuter (the frame is under 3.3 pounds), has a sleek look, defined by a split top tube elegantly forming a continuous arc by integrating into the seat stays. Designed to be a urban cyclist’s dream, it’s easy to imagine how this fast and agile machine will look equally great sprinting to the gym in L.A. or, as Budnitz did recently, cruising to a black-tie event in Amsterdam.

Paul-B-two-3.jpg

The second similarly lightweight model, No.2, has a more fun, relaxed feel, built more for ambling around town than for distance rides. What Budnitz calls a “BMX bike for adults,” fatter tires, a rear wheel that’s smaller than the front and softer frame geometry make for a ride that’s overall smoother than No.1. The different size tires mean the No.2 accelerates fast and holds its speed too.

Paul-B-seatstay-2.jpg Paul-B-badge-2.jpg

Due to overwhelmingly positive on-street response to prototypes, the first run sold out even before the company’s official site launch. But the second production run is now available for order with an expected delivery date of Holiday 2011—if you have the $5,500 that they each cost. Add on another $750 if you want an 11-speed over a single-speed internal hub.
