Pleasure to the People: Form 4

Jimmyjane’s third in a collaborative series of high-design pleasure providers
form4-jimmyjane-l.jpg

A collaborative series with a magic touch, Pleasure to the People sees industrial designer Yves Behar team up with Jimmyjane founder Ethan Imboden on a collection of waterproof vibrators. Behar—whose designs “seek to put the human experience first”—and Imboden just launched the third and final toy in the group, Form 4, which combines a souped-up motor with a realistic, flexible shape designed for internal stimulation.

Like all the Pleasure to the People vibes, the Form 4 recharges on an included petite base—a feature that requires a little extra dedication over battery-powered vibrators, but that rewards the committed with significantly more powerful stimulation. With five levels of intensity and four vibration patterns, as well as being completely waterproof, the tiny device offers a lot of options for creative play.

While small (just 3.25″ x 2″), its specifically-contoured size can “reach the G-spot” and it’s made from a silicone that has just enough give to adapt to your body. With its highly-engineered materials, emphasis on function (it even lasts seven hours on a single charge) and adorably-shaped forms in contemporary colors, Pleasure to the People range are sex toys firmly for this generation.

Kiener Toys

Lo-fi animated music boxes handmade in Switzerland
kiener1.jpg

Kathrin Kiener practically grew up in her uncle’s timber yard, sweeping floors and in the process falling in love with all things wood—so much so that she founded Kiener Toys. Today, the 30-year-strong Swiss company handcrafts clever wooden toys; from mobiles to dolls that wobble, each charming and sturdily-constructed plaything can be enjoyed by kids and adults alike. We particularly like the Musikwürfel (music box) collection, some of which cleverly animate wooden scenes, like flowers or snowboarders, to the music.

While more costly than most toys (prices span $30-120), the quality and care that goes into each toy makes them heirloom pieces. Kiener also works with “Das Werk- und Wohnhaus,” a Swiss program that employs socially and mentally impaired men and women to work as carpenters crafting the toys.

Kiener Toys sell internationally from Swissmade and from Funshop in Korea, as well as at stores around Switzerland.

Hot Wheels Video Racer

Put yourself in the virtual driver’s seat with the latest tech-enabled racecar toys
hotwheels3.jpg

In 2010 Mattel put kids in Barbie’s shoes when they introduced a built-in camera. Now, with their Hot Wheels Video Racer, amateur car racers can put themselves in the driver’s seat too. Equipped with an LCD screen on the bottom and a built-in memory chip, the car functions as a low-res camera, capturing up to 12 minutes of footage at 30 frames per second.

hotwheels2.jpg

The cameras mount to any computer via USB port and, using Hot Wheels software, kids can choose from a range of music, scene transitions and special effects when editing. The cars also come with adhesives and Velcro mounting straps so that budding filmmakers can attach the car to any surface—such a helmet, skateboard or remote control helicopter.

hotwheels1.jpg

The Video Racer is track compatible, a feature that will be even more fun with the launch of Hot Wheels Wall Tracks, a mountable system coming out Fall 2011. With the car camera offering a 1:64 scale point of view, taking the car from the floor to the wall as it rounds loops and zooms down straightaways will allow kids to safely engage with the thrill of racing first-hand.

Hot Wheels Wall Tracks span $17-30, and the Video Racer will sell for $60. Both will be available online and in toy stores Fall 2011.

earlyride1.jpg earlyride2.jpg
Early Rider

Designed to teach bike riding without training wheels, the Early Rider series is the upshot of a parent frustrated by the lack of options on the market. The three styles—Lite, Classic and Evolution—each cater to a little one’s body size and practical capabilities, beginning with a bike for someone at 20 months to finally a five-year-old. With simple, easy-to-repair design, the solid birch bikes are likely to be passed on for generations. Available in natural as well as pink or blue, prices span $160-200 and sell from
local dealers
and online from Early Rider to countries around the world.

wishbone1.jpg

Wishbone Bikes

Like Early Rider, Wishbone is a parent-driven idea—in this case, dreamed up by a couple who wanted to provide their children with an exciting reason to spend time outdoors. After prototyping the bikes in an NYC bathroom, the design duo relocated to New Zealand, where they continue to pursue their sustainable project. The bikes are actually a 3-in-1 system, taking the ride from a tricycle style to a bicycle, with a two-wheel “balance bike” in between. Made from kiln-dried, preservative-free birch and ash, the bikes sell online for $230 from Wishbone.

Walachia sells online from Amazon and a host of specialty toy stores, with prices starting at $20 for simpler models and going up to $250.

Incoqnito

Transformers for adults—jewelry that conceals erotic accessories
TiChangDesk.jpg

When we came across industrial designer Ti Chang’s line of discreet pleasure devices at the Adult Entertainment Expo recently, the assortment of sleekly-designed sex toys far outshone the typically ill-conceived gadgets saturating the market. The second surprise came when we realized that each accessory doubles as a wearable fashion piece, cleverly disguising its true purpose. Some stand outs in her current nine-piece collection include the Droplet Necklace, with silver pendants that also happen to be small vibrators; the seductive Blade Necklace features a dull-edged knife sculpted from hand-cut glass that can be used to stimulate your erogenous zones; the Lash Belt conveniently turns from holding your pants up to keeping your loved one in order; the Leather Handcuffs are a great looking leather double cuff bracelet set that can be used for light restraint.

We followed up with Chang to learn more about the collection and her novel take on the toy industry.

What was your path to starting your own company?

I received my bachelors from Georgia Tech in Industrial Design. I started my career designing personal care products for women, mainly hair brushes. I then went on to design bicycle accessories for Trek Bicycle. I decided to go back to school for my Masters at the Royal College of Art in London. Afterward, I worked as a design consultant on various projects from branding, furniture, to home accessories. During this period I moved around a lot—London, China, New York, and Boston. It was great to experience vastly different projects and cultures which helped me to become a more well-rounded designer. I gained experience working on all aspects of bringing a company/product to life from brand conception to design and production. This gave me the confidence and tools to enable me to eventually start my own company.

Incoqnito1.jpg Incoqnito2.jpg
How did you evolve to designing intimate accessories?

It was a combination of things. The landscape of the American economy going down hill, so it was very hard to find projects or work. Even if there was work, it wasn’t particularly exciting or well-paid. Also because I care deeply about what I do—I have a hard time working on design projects I am not passionate about. It’s both my blessing and my curse. I made the leap into intimate accessories because it was an area that both fascinated me and to which I felt I had something to contribute.

Considering the interest in intimate accessories, why are so few brands design-oriented in the space?

Culturally the topic of sexuality is taboo. There is a strong cultural stigma with this industry where intimate accessories, adult novelty, toys and porn all get lumped together. So people tend to shy away from this topic. It’s not exactly dinner table conversation and generally people aren’t talking about it openly. The attitude around sexuality is very much an artifact of history—not the nature of sexuality. So people are projecting that historical view and being put off by it instead of embracing it for what it is. I think this stigma is what keeps people from thinking about this space and endeavoring to innovate and make products better.

incocnito5.jpg

How did you arrive at the concept of sex toys doubling as jewelry?

I was always disappointed at the lack of aesthetically elegant toys in this space. Why is everything hot pink, purple and rubbery? I wanted to bring a sense of timelessness like a piece of jewelry, something dignifying and beautiful, an object that you would want to keep for a long time. I don’t think it’s necessary to chose just one aspect of the function, why not have it all?

Where does your inspiration come from?

I’m inspired by the material world around me. As an industrial designer, I am drawn to problem solving through design of objects, the tactile experience and the desire to make things a little better.

incocnito6.jpg

Tell us about some of your products, like the Handcuff bracelets and Lash Belt.

I think it is interesting that many of the products enable experiences outside the bedroom, and I think I will leave it at that. The leather cuffs and the Lash belt are both fun. The cuffs are more understated, whereas the Lash belt is a stronger fashion/lifestyle statement.

I’m sure you have some great stories to tell, any you want to share?

Working in this industry, there are some great moments. One that comes to mind is the fact that my coworkers and I can go sex toy shopping and it’s totally normal, whereas in other companies, it would probably be an HR violation of some sort.

Any advice for those that want to get something for their partner?

If you are considering a gift from the Incoqnito collection, try to understand the taste and style of your partner. For the more adventurous couples, I would recommend the Razor for sensation play. For the those who like jewelry and edgy accessories, the Leather cuffs and the Droplet necklace are classic accessories that have a sexy twist that you both can enjoy!
