Retro Brick Phone

If we imagine a world without Smartphones, then it’s easy to picture this Just 5 Brick Phone by Art Lebedev Studio as a must-have. However, we do live in the world of Technicolor so a large-key, monochromatic graphics-display phone sounds a bit off. Or does it? Specs like retractable antenna, radio, alarm clock, flashlight, calculator, calendar, handheld meter, only one game – “Race” and mapping are nostalgic. The winner of course is the one-week battery power. Will you trade this for your iPhone or Samsung Galaxy?

Monitor Your Vision

Imagine being able to stare at your computer screen all day long without your glasses or contact lenses. A farfetched though for myopic folks like me, unless we undergo surgery; or we see the fruition of the i-Free concept. The idea is to have auto-correcting screen that portrays images according to the prescription number you have. This ways you strain your eyes lesser and it helps your vision in the long run. I’m all ears to know more if this idea is plausible; any comments?

i-Free is a 2013 iF Design Award winner.

Rhino Skin – Second Chance Gear by Hila Raam

Rhino Skin-secon chance gear by Hila Raam

This Kevlar rucksack with a built-in protective hood by Israeli designer Hila Raam is perfect for anyone who wants to go backpacking in a war zone.

Rhino Skin-secon chance gear by Hila Raam

Hila Raam, a recent graduate of Hadassah College in Jerusalem, created the Rhino Skin backpack as a form of personal protection that safeguards the wearer from the debris and impact of missile attacks.

Developed using Aramid, a bulletproof fibre used in military vests, the backpack is designed for people living in areas of the world where terror attacks are a part of daily life.

In the event of an emergency, the wearer simply pulls the side straps of the bag around their chest, hauls the protective hood over their head and lays on the ground for cover.

The shape of the backpack is formulated to protect the vital organs. Raam hopes its use will reduce the number of fatalities associated with terror attacks.

In the video Raam created to explain the project (above) she documents the number of rocket and mortar attacks in Israel in recent years points out that 60% of people were in the open air when the attacks occurred, leaving them with limited options for protecting themselves.

In the event of an air raid warning, people caught outdoors should lie flat on the ground to avoid shrapnel from exploding munitions. Donning the Rhino Skin backpack and hood would reduce the chance of injury, Raam believes.

“This unique bag pack protects the essential life or death body areas,” says Raam. “It protects the head, neck, back and the sides of the body. Most important the brain, heart, liver and kidneys are fully protected.”

Magnetic Dumbbell

Looking for a variation in your exercise routine? How about the O2 Magnetic Dumbbell, one that allows you to do many different exercises thanks to the embedded electromagnets. One of the biggest advantages that these dumbbells possess is that thanks to their compact size and magnetism, they are easily transportable. They adjust to all kinds of training routines as we can simply switch the polarity of electromagnets and get going.

Features

  • The strength of these electromagnets can be set by adjusting the level of electric power according to the work out intensity wanted by the user.
  • It is no longer necessary to carry different regular dumbbells for ten different work out levels, instead only one magnetic dumbbell will always meet the current needs of different training intensity levels.
  • By integrating the push-pull power of the embedded electromagnets, users are no longer bound to the local gym.
  • The display indicates 8-circled bars which each represents an additional weight of 3kg.
  • The user can conveniently choose the right training weight ranging from 3kg to 24kg at a glance.
  • The user can follow the repetitions of each training-set as they are indicated on the display in the middle of the device.

Scrooser electric scooter gets funding boost

News: a fat-wheeled electric concept vehicle that you ride standing up like a child’s scooter has achieved its funding target on Kickstarter, allowing final development to go ahead (+ slideshow).

Scrooser-electric-scooter-3

The Scrooser, developed by a German company of the same name, beat its $120,000 target on the crowd-funding website. The firm will now finalise the design of its “impulse drive” motor, which sits within the hub of the rear wheel and delivers a burst of power each time the rider uses their foot to propel the vehicle forward.

Scrooser electric scooter

Scrooser founder Jens Thieme described the product as “a completely new vehicle category.” He added: ““We are very happy with the success of Scrooser on Kickstarter. With the fresh capital, we can now take final developments of our innovative Impulse Drive and we get a lot closer to our goal. “

The motor automatically kicks in to boost the rider’s propulsion at speeds of over 2 miles per hour, but disengages when the rider uses the brake. The vehicle has a top speed of 15 miles per hour.

“A perfect pace for maneuvering through the city among pedestrian filled sidewalks is around 6 mph” the company’s website explains, “but feel free to race cyclists on bike paths at a maximum speed of up to 15 mph.”

With wide wheels and a low centre of gravity, the Scrooser remains upright when the rider dismounts. The 1000W motor provides direct power to the rear wheel, without the need for gears or chains.

A rechargeable lithium-ion battery located beneath the footboard can provide power for up to 25 days, and takes around 3 hours to recharge via a standard power outlet.

Measuring 1.75 metres and weighing 28kg, the scooter features a frame made of aluminium tube formed by a process called “freeform 3D bending”. The Scrooser also features a low seat, integrated lock and LED lights for riding at night.
