frog Future or Fiction: Revolver Turbine Prototype

revolver_1.png

A few months ago, we invited Core77 readers to weigh-in on frog’s internal design competition, frog Future or Fiction. In the inaugural edition of Future or Fiction, the design firm called on their pool of 1600 people spread across 10 studios and 15 locations around the globe to find innovative ways and unexpected solutions for rethinking how wind power could be harnessed through leveraging existing infrastructure or incorporating it into new infrastructure. The Core77 reader favorite, a portable wind turbine, was created for outdoor activity and can be easily transported and used to power electronics in remote locations.

Concept

Now after having a designer and engineer take a closer look at the idea, frog shares their rough prototype for the Revolver—a small, portable, consumer-grade wind turbine for charging mobile devices and other personal electronics when you’re off the grid.

Transported in a discreet tube, Revolver is easily set up. It can generate up to 35 watts of power from just a pleasant breeze—enough to keep a laptop charged, light up a lantern, or recharge a phone, camera, and other mobile devices—simultaneously.

Watch the prototype in action after the jump and see more information about the Revolver setup and construction. Any feedback? Would you use the Revolver on a remote expedition?

Nikon D800

The latest DSLR boasts a 36.3-megapixel full-frame sensor and full HD video support

Nikon-D800.jpg

Almost every picture I take for Cool Hunting stories is shot with my Nikon D700 so today’s unveil of the D800 is welcomed news. An expected follow-on to last month’s D4 announcement, the D800 brings a bounty of new features ranging from a massive full-frame CMOS sensor to dual SD and CF card slots to proper HD video support.

D800_Slot_CF_SD.jpg D800_Skeleton.jpg

The D800 is slightly smaller and lighter than the D700 despite being more feature-packed. The new model features an FX-format CMOS sensor and EXPEED 3 image-processing engine, hitting the mark with an incredible pixel count of 36.3 million pixels and a wide ISO range of 100-6400 (expandable to 25,600) for impressive low light shooting. From these advancements expect truer tonal graduation, more faithful color and a wider dynamic range.

Raising the stakes for filming capabilities on a DSLR, the CMOS sensor reads image data at an incredible rate to minimizes rolling shutter distortion while also reducing noise in low-light filming conditions. The D800 ups recording time up to 30 minute per clip and offers full manual aperture settings to adjust depth of field, all while capturing at 30-fps full 1080p HD resolution. New output wise, the videographer welcomes a designated headphone jack and an 8 bit HDMI port for uncompressed full HD signal streaming.

Also announced today is the alternative D800E. Otherwise identical to the D800, this upgraded version promises truer image accuracy for RAW photo shooters by disabling the anti-aliasing properties for the optical low pass filter (OLPF). Instead of filtering the incoming light to prevent moiré and false color—like the D800 (and almost all DSLRs)—the light is transmitted to the image sensor uninhibited, achieving higher accuracy images. While this feature is of clear benefit to pro photographers, we suspect those seeking to shoot video will prefer the D800 as it will handle a wider range of shooting situations.

The Nikon D800E will be available mid-April for $3300 while the D800 will hit shelves late next month with a price tag of $3000.

Still Life

SpareOne Phone by NextOfKin Creatives

NextofKinCreatives-SpareOne-1.jpg

Sustainability notwithstanding, the disposable mobile phone is certainly a practical solution for emergencies, travel, children and disaster relief. Insofar as these are the applications of any disposable phone, they’re listed as “Use Cases” on SpareOne’s website; the true innovation behind the device lies in its shelf life of 15 years, courtesy of a single AA battery.

NextofKinCreatives-SpareOne-2.jpg

Of course, the most salient innovation of the SpareOne lies in NextOfKin Creatives‘ unconventional design, which features the mundane portable power source in lieu of a screen. Rodney Loh of the Singapore design firm explains: “When PSL and XPAL approached Thomas [Tellier] and myself at NextOfKin Creatives to strategize this spare phone idea, we knew immediately that it has to be simple and ‘life-proof.’ The archetype of a screen was logically used to showcase and glorify this simple but iconic long-lasting AA battery.”

NextofKinCreatives-SpareOne-3.jpg

According to the website, SpareOne is “the only cell phone in the world powered by a standard AA battery.” The lifetime of the charge, if the device goes unused, is effectively the shelf life of the battery (the 15 hour figure comes from the Energizer Ultimate Lithium L91, which yields up to 10 hours of talk time).
