The Lovie Awards 2012

Celebrating the Internet’s most valuable European players
lovie-awards1.jpg

Now in their second year, Europe’s Lovie Awards are quickly gaining momentum with a jam-packed program based around meaningful recognition of achievement in the interactive fields. In an awards-heavy industry, The Lovies—sister to the US’ Webby Awards—stand out for carefully selecting work that is as relevant now as it will be in the future. This distinction is clear even in the naming, which borrows from Ada Lovelace, the world’s first programmer who insightfully saw the computer as a tool with way more potential than simply calculating sums.

“The Lovie Awards are a pure kind of awards,” explains founder Nik Roope. He, along with a permanent panel of judges from the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences will pick winners from over 80 categories, ensuring a more standardized selection process for the annual competition. “I think awards are really important,” Roope says, adding that they created The Lovies “to try to help establish what things should be the standard, and what we should celebrate.”

In the lightning-fast field of technology, it’s easy to be overwhelmed by the increasing surplus of applications. Like the Gold Rush or the Industrial Revolution, this surge of digital arts and sciences is “full of brilliant inventors etc., but it’s also full of bullshit,” Roope remarks. In the same way he and his agency Poke London help clients navigate through the ever-changing digital landscape, the expert judges behind The Lovies reel it all in and decipher what will become embedded in our culture, creating “anchors” for the world to use as meaningful benchmarks for creative thinking in the digital realm.

As media partner, Cool Hunting is excited to see what The Lovies will put forward this year. There are still a few days left to submit an entry, which is “open to all European organizations and individuals involved in designing, building, managing, maintaining, marketing or promoting Websites, Interactive Advertising & Media, Online Film & Video, and Mobile & App content for European business, consumer or general audiences.” Also keep an eye out for the awards themselves, taking place this November during Internet Week Europe.

Cup Burns

Burning Cup offers a solution to reheating or microwaving your tepid coffee (or beverage) and losing its flavor. The cup prevents the drink from cooling down due to heat release to the outside. It uses sodium acetate to get the heat going. This what the designer says, “The sodium acetate contained in the inside of the cup design can regulate the heat of beverage. The liquid solution breaks the balance of liquid state with a tiny impact and hardens it solid, and it then generates heat momentarily.”

This heat generated by such an impact maintains the temperature of the beverage in the cup for a longer period of time. Every time you feel the beverage going a bit cold, simply crackle the sodium acetate from the outside once again and restart the heating process.

B&O’s new BeoPlay V1 TV has All the Bells and Whistles

B&O1.png

Even as TVs get flatter, thinner and lighter, Bang&Olufsen’s new BeoPlay V1 TV is the most streamlined option on the market. With four innovative new mounting options—floor stand, upright table stand, wall bracket and ceiling bracket—it’s designed to fit any lifestyle and any space. Designer Anders Hermansen was apparently inspired by origami to create a body for the TV made of only two sheets of powder coated steel, folded together like paper. The floor stand or wall and ceiling mountings are equally unobtrusive, as is the universal Beo4 remote, which can control DVD, Blu-ray players, Set-top boxes, NAS drivers and Apple TV, which mounts in the back.

Samsung makes the screen panel (100 Hz on the 32” model and 120 Hz on the 40”) with full HD 1080p, Edge LED backlight and an automatic picture control sensor that “enables the screen to adapt to lighting conditions in the room to deliver optimal performance.” As far as sound goes, B&O’s proprietary ICEPower amplifier provides integrated 5.1 surround sound power enough to fill a room. The tech news site T3 reviewed the V1, using a live Adele concert to test out the sound.

“Unsurprisingly, the V1 sounds pretty amazing and definitely supports the claim that the speakers are powerful enough to fill a room…The ICEPower amplifier technology really comes to the fore in terms of loudness while backlighting technology and the anti-glare nature of the panel made for great viewing angles, but this was, of course, in optimal viewing conditions, which won’t be the case for every living room.”

Though B&O is selling the V1 as its more affordable option, it’s still pretty pricey. The 32” is about $3,170 and the 40” is $3,831 (converted prices). And in case you were thinking of buying one and using the tabletop stand to move it around to different rooms in your house, the unit weighs in at a hefty 57 pounds, though it’s still a solid investment if you have the means (and/or if you have a Flat Boombox).

EVER Technology: The Road Itself Charges Your Car Through the Tires

0evertech1.jpg

A gasoline-powered car that never has to stop for gas is impossible to create. However, a team of Japanese university researchers are hoping to create an electric-powered car that never has to stop for recharging. The solution isn’t easy, requiring massive infrastructure changes, but they’re proving it’s at least possible with their EVER (Electric Vehicle, Electric Road) concept, which sends electricity from the roadway into a moving car through the tires.

0evertech2.jpg

At a demonstration last week in Japan, a team led by Takashi Ohira, Toyohashi University of Technology professor of Electrical and Electronic Information Engineering, used a mock-up to demonstrate that the conductive properties of concrete could be exploited to send power into a vehicle through the tires. There are still plenty of hurdles to clear—the relatively paltry amount of electricity used to fire up the lightbulb in the demo would need to be increased a hundredfold to get through the 20 centimeters of concrete in your average Japanese roadway—but we find the concept fascinating and with far-reaching potential.

Ah Tyco, if only you guys had lasted long enough to see the day…

BlackBerry with Windows?

How comfortable will you be with a Windows backed BlackBerry? Nothing is too radical these days and when foes become friends, the new relationship blossoms into something big and spectacular. Concept Smartphone pro Michal Bonikowski sent us his thoughts on a BlackBerry Smartphone hosting Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8 platform. The design not only simplifies the BB but also makes it a more fluid interface with Windows. I like the approach but I don’t think this partnership is ever going to happen, but then, you never know!

Makers of the Nest Learning Thermostat look at design in a new way

Advertorial content:

Nest-Happy-Homes-2.jpg

Nest, maker of the Nest Learning Thermostat, has only just begun implementing their larger vision of creating happy homes. By reinventing a nondescript household necessity to make it a beautiful centerpiece of the home, Nest stands out by looking at the home—and the world in general—with new eyes. To celebrate this outlook, today Nest launched a new campaign video called Happy Homes, which encapsulates the innovative company’s design ethos.

“I design for the iPhone generation, people who expect beautiful, connected, intuitive devices,” explains Nest founder and CEO Tony Fadell. While this design-conscious demographic has grown extensively since the Apple boom some years ago—spawned by the iPod, which was designed by Fadell—products for the home, and appliances in particular, have remained rather untouched. This discrepancy became apparent to Fadell during the building of his “green” home in Lake Tahoe, California. When shopping for a palatable thermostat Fadell was less than impressed with his options, and so, Nest was born.

Coupled with the beauty of its product, Nest’s holistic approach has allowed them to carve their own niche in industry of home product design. Fadell tells CH that combining “new technology and a smarter, more connected customer with design sensibilities allowed Nest to revolutionize the entire experience: product, marketing, packaging, sales, installation, etc.” In short, they’ve taken an unloved product—the thermostat—and made it desirable.

To further encourage creativity in the home, Nest is hosting a competition via Pinterest. Here users can pin images of their own happy home, or really any household object with a bit of personality—i.e. a face. See the progress on Pinterest, or simply keep an eye on the Nest blog for more happy home inspiration.
