Thinking Green in 2010

We recently received a copy of the 2010 Think Green Calendar by EIGA, a design firm out of Germany. The calendar shows contemporary “Eco-typography” and special “green works” of designers from various disciplines worldwide. “Think Green!” creates a stimulating visual inventory of the fusion of ecology and design. For more on the Think Green Calendar you know what to do.

PNC’s green wall towers at nearly 2,400 in square feet which is the size of two tennis courts. Wow!

According to a post over at Forecast Earth, the idea is catching on.

Like green roofs—their perpendicular counterparts—green walls are covered in vegetation and provide the benefits of natural insulation and removal of air pollutants. PNC, which provides banking and wealth management services, estimates it will be 25 percent cooler behind the wall than the ambient summer temperatures.

The PNC wall features more than 15,000 ferns, sedums, brass buttons and other plants that create a swirling pattern of varying hues of green above the company’s logo. They are divided among hundreds of 2-by-2-foot aluminum panels that were anchored onto the building’s frame after part of the granite facade was removed.

Joanne Westphal, a landscape architecture professor at Michigan State University and part of the school’s Green Roof Research Program, states that: “the biggest benefit to green walls is their ability to help cool buildings through shading. They also help capture rainwater and release it more slowly into the atmosphere and stormwater systems.

Grow your own tomatoes

Creative Review is always trying new cover concepts. The February Issue is no different with the magazine packaged in a compostable bag. An added twist is that they added a few tomato seeds so the subscriber can grow their own tomatoes using the compostable bag. Instructions are on the back. Happy gardening.

ReubenMiller’s Got a Brand-Spanking New Look!

I’m sure you’ve noticed by now that we’ve got a fresh new look for the blog. After a lot of coding, tweaking and generally making a mess of CSS, I’ve managed to get it to look half-decent (let me know what you think of it!) It still remains a work-in-progress. The goal of this redesign was to make it easier to get around and add some more color. After all, you know we’re suckers for color!

Last but not least, our large header incorporates the work of a featured artist. We’ll be featuring different artists in that space and rotating them over time to keep things interesting. This isn’t a sponsored spot, but rather a testament to our support of great artists. Our first feature is of the brilliant and witty Simon Oxley, one of our all-time favorites.

Enjoy!

The ‘Unbook’ is on it’s way

I swung by the 381 RedBull gallery on the weekend to check out the first event for Spread The Word’s ‘Unbook’. Here’s a few photos to see what it’s all about.

Started off with a short presentation from The Movement to explain what we were doing there.

Then we contributed ideas and questions to the boards surrounding the gallery.

And then we drank. Well, I guess we were drinking the whole time. But we did afterwards too…

Photos thanks to Spread The Word. Learn more about the ‘Unbook’ here, and check out the RedBull 381 Project here.

Cause It’s Not Going To Write Itself…
