Clear Accessories That Are Nowhere Near Invisible!

imageWhile you may opt to leave the lucite platform heels for the… errr, pole, less frowned-upon clear accessories are making a wave in the pool of upcoming spring trends, and they’re looking anything but cheap-o. Clear lucite and plastic, traditionally not the most luxe of jewelry-making materials, are sprouting up everywhere we look in the realms of sunglasses, watches and beyond, and I think the effect is totally refreshing! Think of clear pieces as 2010’s answer to white accessories, except without the constant worry of accidental barbecue sauce spills or inevitable grass stains. I love the way clear jewelry reflects the sun, whether in the form of baubles or bangles, and it’s a way to still get that “iced” look without spending thousands on actual bling. Of course, while I’d gladly take real diamonds any day, clear pieces have a more versatile and casual daytime spring look — and I dare you to find something it won’t match! Take a look at the slideshow for my favorite clear accessories for spring!

Vivetta Autumn/Winter 2010

vivetta-1.jpg vivetta-last.jpg

One of the more interesting emerging fashion designers currently coming out of Italy, Vivì Ponti uses typically traditional materials and processes for her line of blouses, dresses and jackets. Designed under the moniker Vivetta, the collection emanates a clear reference to French couture with ’80s undertones, but also to more whimsical concepts such as the Venice Carnival and electro-pop.

Ponti, born and raised in central Italy, works out of her studio in Milan but continues to produce the line close to her hometown. Allowing her imagination to take the reigns, the resulting collections indicate her ability to fuse a singularly experimental attitude with a completely wearable approach.

Ponti also recently designed a series of dresses for Peaches Geldorf, of which she included versions “inspired by her choices” in the Fall 2010 collection. “I had to simplify and cool down the peaks of creativity in that project, so to be more in line with the market,” she explained.

Vivetta sells in specialty boutiques around the world with a limited collection online.

America’s Next Top Model Cycle 14 Premieres Tonight! Check Out My Top 3 Predictions!

imageYup, it’s “America’s Next Top Model” season yet again, and after a brief interlude of giving the shorter girls a chance last fall (was I the only one that found it super blahhh?), cycle 14 takes things back to their 5’7″-and-up standards. But at least one vital aspect is bound to be different this time — new judge Andre Leon Talley, Vogue editor-at-large, is joining the judges’ table! I know what you’re thinking: are Andre and Miss J. going to have to compete to out-sass each other? Much to my dismay (and probably yours too), Miss J. is retiring his post on the panel for the time-being. But fear not — he’ll still be gracing us with his presence on the show, returning to a more coach-like position to help train the models rather than just sending them packing. So which of this cycle’s 13 contestants are destined to go the distance? You know I love sizing the girls up on the CW site and making first impression-based predictions, and while I haven’t quite mastered the art of snap judgments, I’m determined not to give up! Last time, my guesses certainly improved — two of them made it nearly to the end (it’s not my fault they didn’t have a Top 3 this time around!) and one of my picks even took the shorty title (yay Nicole!). Maybe this time I’ll hit the psychic jackpot and name all three! Visit the CW site to learn more about the models you’ll see on the show tonight, then read on to see my predictions for this season’s Top 3! Photo Source: CWtv.com

Kora-Krit Clothing

korakrit.jpg

Bangkok-born artist Korakrit Arunanondchai originally created his wildly-colorful, limited-edition clothing label Kora-Krit as an extension of his digitally-influenced art. Working chiefly with silkscreen printing, Arunanondchai intended for visitors to his gallery shows to wear the pieces for a fully immersive and visually seamless experience.

kora-krit-1.jpg kora-krit-last-1.jpg

The RISD grad (now based in Brooklyn, NY) takes up various themes in his work, but considers them all to have a shared feeling. He sees his layered compositions as a fortunate glimpse of a fleeting moment, like “a bunch of kids playing basketball” who appear to fight and dance as they bump into each other on the court. But in Arunanondchai’s amped-up world, the scene plays out at an even faster tempo and is possibly “happening in the sky.”

The current collection borrows strong graphic shapes found in video games, particularly the letters X and O, as well as triangle and square shapes. Printed on neon fabrics, the choice links the apparel back to his black light art installation on the same subject.

The forthcoming project, dubbed “Thrs” for the typical gallery opening night, takes Arunanondchai back to a simple black, white and gray palette for series of intricate prints that explore computer-generated gallery spaces. (Pictured above.)

A fan of Hieronymus Bosch, the phantasmagorical world Arunanondchai creates has something in common with contemporaries like Ryan McGinness, who similarly makes densely-layered imagery that toes the line between organization and chaos. On the fashion side, the artist’s futuristic prints connect him to those seen in the most recent collections by Proenza Schouler and the late Alexander McQueen (also a fellow Bosch admirer). His passion for creating an unabbreviated universe has led to multi-media installations that transcend physical boundaries, as well as projects as tangible as a laptop for Dell.

Kora-Krit sells online or from La Forêt in Tokyo with prices starting at $29.

Silk And Satin Shorts For Every Occasion

imageBefore I discovered the appeal of dressy shorts, the only shorts I owned were a few clingy black pairs with stripes down the sides, courtesy of the Nike store. These days I find myself gravitating towards pieces that, to be honest, feel like pajamas, made work-appropriate with tights and heels. Kimchi Blue’s scalloped pair is eerily reminiscent of the Chloe shorts that Kate Bosworth and Chloe Sevigny made us realize we needed, and at just $24, we don’t need to be convinced! Sonia by Sonia Rykiel’s bow-adorned pair mixes menswear styling with feminine flair for a sweet skirt substitution, and Diane von Furstenberg’s kelly green shorts practically scream “spring!” and are on sale to boot. Click on my slideshow for 8 pairs to take you from the bedroom to the boardroom, and even the bar after that. Just saying!

Shoe Of The Week: Camilla Skovgaard Collar Sandals

imageI’m usually really not a fan of platforms with tracking on the bottom. I mean, what’s the point? You’d have to be a complete fool to actually try hiking anywhere in heels, and either you or your shoes would likely die in the attempt (I’m not sure which would be worse). But for some reason, I’m totally digging the zig-zag bottoms of these sandals by Camilla Skovgaard. The tracking-inspired soles clearly are just for design and not function, and I actually love the way the edgy jagged pattern offsets the softness of the tan leather and the femininity of the slouchy belted design. While I’d rather get married in clogs (yeah, right) than trek any farther than two blocks in these bad boys, for once I’m kind of buying the whole hiker-inspired trend! Well, not literally buying it — that’s one heck of a price tag.

What: the Camilla Skovgaard Collar Sandals
Price: $545
Where to Buy: Saks
Who Found It: xgalexy was the first to add the Camilla Skovgaard Collar Sandals to the Hive.

Miss The Oscars? Check Out Stylehive’s Academy Awards Red Carpet Roundup!

imageWhile last night’s 82nd Annual Academy Awards was definitely a big night for Kathryn Bigelow and the rest of the “Hurt Locker” crew (take that, James Cameron!), the Oscars are also always a huge night for red carpet fashion. And although the night’s main winners aren’t always the event’s best dressed to boot (they can’t have it all, can they?), Best Actress winner Sandra Bullock still managed to make my list of top dresses of the night! Her shimmery platinum Marchesa dress, paired with contrasting red lipstick and sleek straight hair, suited her perfectly and fit her like a glove (unlike Kathryn Bigelow’s, which was more like a vice — she couldn’t even breathe!). Another of my personal favorites was Miley Cyrus, strangely enough, who rocked a gorgeous champagne-colored bustier gown by Jenny Packham that had just the right amount of sparkle. And as much as I love Anna Kendrick, her flowy Elie Saab gown didn’t really knock me off my feet, and Zoe Saldana’s dress was only pretty from the waist up — what was with all those ridiculous ruffles? Take a look at the slideshow for a selection of the night’s most noteworthy looks! Photo Credit: PR Photos

Taylor, Lindsay, Or Ke$ha: Who’s The Biggest Hot Mess?

imageLadies, ladies, ladies. Since when is “trashy-chic” something to aspire to? I hate to be catty, but some of our favorite peroxide-blonde starlets have been making a name for themselves in a way that provides Christian Siriano enough material to devote an entire collection to “hot messes.” While Gossip Girl gone bad Taylor Momsen isn’t quite “drowned rat in a gutter” just yet, she’s looking more and more like Courtney Love each time she sets foot on the red carpet, and the jaded sour facial expression in cahoots with all the lingerie-inspired getups are neither flattering nor age-appropriate. Newcomer Ke$ha has purposely made looking rumpled and hungover her gimmick, and it’s certainly a “look,” but do you really want to build a career being known as a “drunk Taylor Swift”…? And then there’s Lindsay. Well, there isn’t really anything that needs to be said about Lindsay, is there? Vote below on who you think looks the most like they just rolled out of bed… and not in a sexy way. Photo Credit: PR Photos

Tom Binns in Wonderland!

imageWhenever I see Tom Binns’ jewelry it makes me insanely happy. Known for mixing the classic and punky, his much copied work is the perfect blend of chaos and elegance. It made him an excellent choice to join the likes of Stella McCartney in creating a jewelry collection with Disney for Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland”. The entire line takes inspiration from the much-anticipated movie, and each iconic character served as a framework for the jewelry. From a necklace made of what looks like broken tea cups to heart earrings and a bib necklace fit for a queen; the line is whimsical and dark just like movie. For those willing to shell out a pretty penny, Tom Binns is creating six high fashion pieces for Disney Signature that will retail from $1,000 to $2,000. A more affordable collection, Tom Binns for Disney Couture will retail from $100- $500. Look for them now before they’re gone, and go see the movie March 5th.
