Rokin Footwear

Modern soles with a vintage aesthetic help Rokin Footwear successfully blend traditional European craftsmanship with urban appeal for a stylishly simple and wholly versatile shoe.

Christoffer Brattin—the man behind the Gothenburg, Sweden-based company—launched the first collection of men’s shoes in the fall of 2007. “I started Rokin because I thought there was a need for quality shoes at a nice price for the young urban man. I wanted to do a broad collection of both sports, casual and dressy shoes” says Brattin, a former Tommy Hilfiger Europe footwear designer.

Choosing to work only with suppliers steeped in history, Rokin prides itself on delivering high-quality shoes made from natural materials. Design attributes such as the odor-preventing breathable foot beds bring function to sustainability.

The utilitarian and timeless air of each style is evident in the current Spring/Summer 2010 collection—an assortment of 66 designs spanning pink suede derby loafers to lace-up leather boots as well as sandals to sneakers.

Recession Chic: Sexy Flat Sandals For $100 Or Less!

imageMy favorite outfit combination is definitely a dress and strappy sandals. It’s feminine, breezy and perfect for the Spring and Summer seasons. While strappy sandals with stilettos or a high wedge attached is super cute and sexy, we do not live within the pages of Vogue (although that would be awesome), and real life sometimes calls for shoes that aren’t as tall as a first-grader. But just because your day of errands mandates that flat soles be a must, it doesn’t mean you need to give up sex appeal. A flat pair of sandals are easily given a more sensual vibe with the addition of anything from jewels to ankle straps, and investing in a cute and versatile pair means that you can wear it with one ensemble after another. Sexy, flat sandals can look fancy and expensive, but actually comes in a variety of affordable styles. So say goodbye to plain old boring flip-flops and click on the slideshow to see some of my favorite sexy flat sandals for $100 or less!

Look Gorgeously Down-To-Earth With Beaded Tribal Jewelry!

imageYou may think that the whole boho-chic thing really isn’t your thing, but there’s a way to incorporate earthy style without the knee-length skirts and peasant tops. Tribal-influenced beaded jewelry is flattering on everyone because the color possibilities and patterns are nearly endless. Plus, it’s versatile enough as an accessory that you don’t need to plan your entire outfit around it in order to pull it off, unlike those ridiculously expensive and impractical shoes you bought last week. With intricate styles like Aztec-inspired patterns, Native American style feathered embellishments, and African seed-beaded fringe, looking back to one’s roots never looked better! What I love most about tribal-inspired jewelry is that it allows you to add glitz while still managing to look natural and earthy — so you can dress up your daytime look almost effortlessly without looking overdone. Take a look at the slideshow for my picks!

Video Style Steal: Recreate Rocker-Chic Like The Runaways’ “Cherry Bomb”

imageWhile they certainly faced some skeptics, Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning’s portrayals of their rocker-chick legend counterparts Joan Jett and Cherie Currie in “The Runaways” has received positive feedback. Luckily though, the young starlets didn’t have to rely on just their acting chops and musical imitation skills (though they did a commendable job at faking it) — part of their rockstar performances were made easier by a seriously bad-ass wardrobe that turned the young into believable 70’s bad-girl icons! While nowadays you probably couldn’t get away with wearing Dakota Fanning’s barely-there lingerie number (especially not at her young age!), it’s easy to update the duo’s edgy performance style to suit today’s fashion standards. Watch the video to see Dakota and Kristen’s take on The Runaways’ “Cherry Bomb,” then check the slideshow to see how you can channel both a modern-day Joan Jett and Cherie Currie with rebel queen-inspired pieces! Doin’ It Big With Oversized Bows!

imageWhen it comes to clothing and accessories, bows have long been seen as a symbol of femininity with their pretty loops and swirls looking decidedly girly and sweet. Bows have been used to adorn everything from shoes to shirts, helping give them a flirty and fun vibe. Lately though, bows haven’t just been a side accessory, instead they’re popping up large and in charge! Leave it to these crazy designers to take a simple classic and run with it, using big, solitary bows to add embellishment and interest to every type of garment and accessory, making pieces still feminine, but now also modern and sometimes edgy. When added to a classic pump, the shoe suddenly becomes sweet, but daring all at once. Or put a big bow on a simple, basic tee and make your once boring outfit into a trendy, hip ensemble. You could also seriously enhance your current outfits by investing in an oversized-bow belt. Click on the slideshow to see some of my favorite uses of the new big bow trend!

Jon and Lizzie Sunglasses

wintercheck-lizzie1.jpg wintercheck-jon1.jpg

From the Brooklyn-based studio behind the plaid pocket scarf, Wintercheck Factory introduces another functional accessory, this time adding wrap-around protection to sunglasses with their new Jon and Lizzie line. Modeled after the looks and design of old-school safety glasses, Wintercheck adapted the style to make the industrial feel of these classically vintage shapes available to all.

Pistachio- or smoke-colored lenses lay the base for the plastic impact-resistant frames, each with colorful accents (they hand-dip the ear stems in urethane) and fitted with safety standard compliant side shields. Both the Wayfarer-esque Lizzie and the aviator-inspired Jon sunglasses come with a custom waterproof Witz lens locker case and carabiner, begging for trips to the beach.

The 99.9% UV protected Jon and Lizzie sunglasses sell from Wintercheck Factory’s online shop for $45 each. See more images in the gallery below.

Get Contemporary, Artsy Styled Versions Of Classic Literature Greats!

imageAs long as it takes to read a novel, it would only make sense for it to be pretty to look at. For the most part, classic reads tend to fall under the same cover category: plain, English-101 style. With the help of literature and art enthusiasts, new cover designs have made shelving favorites like Wuthering Heights and The Adventures Of Tom Sawyer more of a decorative statement rather than a storage method. As these types of renovations are commonly found near the you-need-one-more-thing bins near the checkout at novelty hipster stores like Urban Outfitters, contemporary renditions of classics have paved themselves a new market for old works. And although you should never judge a book by its cover, these titles were acclaimed well before their wardrobe change, so you can actually feature some books atop coffee tables and nightstands that are worth their beauty.

Uncommon Creatures

uncommon-creatures2.jpg uncommon-creatures1.jpg

The debut collection from Danish designers Christina Højris Ottosen and Jens Kold-Christensen of Uncommon Creatures channels the style of Brooklyn’s conventional Hasidic Jew. Inspired by the typical big black hat, flowing locks and overall aesthetic, the collection includes enticing updated versions of the subculture’s quintessential garb.

uncommon-creatures3.jpg uncommon-creatures4.jpg

The influence is obvious in the collection’s looks, while lending each garment a crisp avant-garde twist. “The AW10 collection sends the wearer on an anarchronanistic journey where essential elements of various Judaistic societies are used as a central theme,” explain the duo.

uncommon-creatures6.jpg uncommon-creatures5.jpg

This vision comes through not only through the simple style, the recognizable hats and extended lengths of the garments, but in the use of knitwear depicting Orthodox Jews and East Orthodox cross motifs.

uncommon-creatures8.jpg uncommon-creatures7.jpg

In keeping with other brands of a similar ilk, Uncommon Creatures uses a classic monochrome palette for its first collection. However, the fledgling brand has strong regional ties, promising to use only Jewish textiles and manufacturers for all its pieces and not outsourcing any part of the production process.

Ethical touches like this coupled with the pair’s advanced eye for aesthetic flourish make for a highly anticipated subsequent collection.

Keep Your Keepsakes Close With A Casual-Cute Bucket Bag

imageBucket bags: they’re like the handbag version of a bad-habit enabler for all those on-the-go gals who just haphazardly throw items into their bottomless pit purses on their way out. They’re like the anti-messenger bag. They’re certainly not good for organizing, but they’re low-maintenance, roomy, and just so darn cute! Whether a tiny and compact pouchette, or a big leather version to fit all your tossed-in-at-the-last-minute loot, don’t let the simple shape fool you! Today’s trendiest bucket bags are tricked out with lots of studs, cinched by drawstring tassels, or brightened up with bold colors to make sure they’re anything but blah. Take a look at the slideshow for a selection of 8 of my favorite bucket bags!
