The White Briefs and Fantastic Man

Literally underdress better this summer with a collaborative collection of breezy underthings

WB-100.jpg WB-200.jpg

When summer hits, it’s normal to change up your wardrobe to account for the warm weather but rarely do we change what we wear beneath our clothes. Teaming up with the bi-annual gentleman’s style journal, Fantastic Man, Swedish underwear brand The White Briefs has created a collection of mesh underwear better suited to warmer climes.

“The briefs, vest and t-shirt are all made from lovely organic cotton,” says The White Briefs’ creative director Peter Simonsson. With underwear being the item of clothing closest to your skin, specification of the mesh itself was crucial to the success of the project.

The cut and fit of the three pieces were also a chief concern. Rather than restricting the wearer, the pieces follow the natural line of the body, complementing movements. The briefs feature a boxy, high-waisted cut with a double-layer of mesh in the crotch for a little added support, while the vest arches across the chest to curve pleasingly around the armpit. Even the t-shirt gets a little added attention on the cutting board, with arms nestling midway down the bicep while the high neck draws the attention up to the face.

“It feels deliciously light. Since you are literally wearing half the amount of fabric you would normally wear, it’s almost like being naked,” attests Fantastic Man editor Jop van Bennekom.

The collection sells online with prices pitched between €35-60. With strong consideration behind each item, it’s a perfectly executed collaboration for the summer season.

Khakis for Spring

Eight new khakis improve on the classic pant

Whether you’re more obsessed with the color (khaki literally translates from Persian as “dusty”) or the breeziness of chino fabric, the simple versatility of the tan cotton pant makes it an enduring staple. Like many menswear classics, the utilitarian appeal goes back to military history—the current popularity of flat-fronted looks with a slightly tapered leg references a style resulting from fabric-rationing measures during WWII.

From the fashion-forward to the traditional with a twist, we put the following pairs to the test with an eye for function, fit and details. Dressed up with oxfords or down with boat shoes, they’re all guaranteed to work as a daily go-to while still setting you apart from the salarymen. (For another recent high-tech option designed for cyclists, check out Nike’s latest chinos.)

Gant-pw100.jpg SA-chino-2.jpg

Longtime New England style purveyors Gant raised some eyebrows with their latest patchwork chino (above left) by Michael Bastian. But keeping it monochromatic balances the look, and going with a slim fit as well as a nice summer-weight fabric makes them an unconventionally breezy pick for the season. Available at Bloomingdale’s or Gant stores and soon online for $224.

Putting a literal twist on the traditional khaki, Steven Alan’s spring twisted seam pant (above right) makes for a nice fit while adding unexpected style. Available in Steven Alan stores and online for $200, they also come in green and grey.

Gap-brick-jpg Dockers-green-400.jpg

Gap, no stranger to classic American style, unsurprisingly made one of our top picks with the twill slim fit khakis (above left). Setting these apart is the wash, available in a variety of great warm colors (grass, brick, etc.), which uses the same “dye and wash” technique as their denim to create subtle fading. Note, although named “slim fit,” they’re actually a more generous cut. Head to any Gap store to pick up a pair for yourself for $60 or get them online.

Dockers’ slim fit tapered khaki (above right) is an instant classic. With a modern, skinnier cut and in six strong colors, this pant will fit with anything already in your closet, and are hands-down the best at this price point. See for yourself on the Dockers site, where you can also buy them for $75.

Closed-chino100.jpg Outlies-200.jpg

Italian brand Closed proves that Europeans know how to do khaki too with their new slim urban chino (above left). Neither too skinny nor too baggy, these fall right in the middle with a pared-down design and with a short run only available in select US stores, it’s unlikely you’ll see anyone else sporting them. Jump online to snag a pair for €139 or check Ron Herman and Bloomingdale’s where we recently spied them.

Outlier’s 60/30 chino, lightweight, breathable, and water-resistant, is an overall superior pant. By taking advantage of the durability and elasticity of micro-denier nylon, the 60/30 is as classic and comfortable as the rest while remaining technologically superior. You can find these movement-friendly Khakis in select cycling shops and online for $200.

TWID-700.jpg JS-800.jpg

Newcomers to the fashion world, The West is Dead bring a great durable new chino (above left) to the table. They’re constructed entirely in America with off-seam pockets and a fit that’s like a slim pair of jeans, helping to avoid the sag that often comes with chinos. Built strong enough to withstand a hard day’s work and available in multiple colors, look out for them in The West is Dead online shop soon.

After five years of hand repurposing Japanese denim at their NY spot, Jean Shop has learned a thing or two. Their twill rocker is a mid-rise straight leg khaki, made with 100% japanese cotton twill selvedge that gives the pant a familiar thick feel of denim, and jean-cut too. Shop online or at one of their NYC stores to get a pair of your own for $280.

The Vic

TenOverSix taps L.A. Eyeworks for a pair of sunglasses fit for a Fellini star
tensixla-thumb.jpg

Recalling the smooth swagger of Marcello Mastroianni and everything “La Dolce Vita,” L.A. retailers TenOverSix recently joined forces with L.A. Eyeworks on a pair of shades that celebrate classic Italian design with modern flair. TenOverSix creative director Kristen Lee explained that she and TenOverSix art and design director Brady Cunningham became “obsessed with the shape” after using a pair of vintage Italian frames belonging to Cunningham’s father. (Originals pictured on model at right).

The duo took their template to L.A. Eyeworks, who masterfully reinterpreted the design with lenses dark enough to brave the glow of sunny California, juxtaposed with pastel pink and yellow frames perfect for welcoming the season’s warm weather.

Dubbed The Vic, the sunglasses also come in dark tortoise shell. You can pick up a pair online or at TenOverSix and L.A. Eyeworks for $230 beginning today, 18 April 2011.

Celebrity Style – Jamie Chung

imageJamie Chung is more than just a promising movie star; her taste in fashion is out of this world. Chung, the daughter of Korean immigrants, grew up in San Francisco where her love for the arts developed.

She became involved with the drama club at her local high school was pushed towards classical academics by her parents. She received a degree in economics but it was never something she was really passionate about. After struggling as a student to pay the rent and for school, she landed a part on The Real World after an encounter at a sports bar where she worked.

After her dabble into reality TV, she got an agent, went to acting classes, and eventually landed a part in the soap opera Days of Our Lives. She has since starred in Sucker Punch and will be featured in the new hit comedy, Hangover II.

She describes her style as ‘dressing appropriately for the occasion’ wearing anything from simple tank tops to beautiful evening gowns. Her style is edgy, adding her own touch to the classic Hollywood glamour.

She can always be spotted sporting the latest designs from Rodarte to Alexander Wang, looks that she describes as ‘outside of the box.’ Her simple additions to her ensemble, such as a simple silver ring or a brass bracelet, add a whole new level of elegance to her style.

However, even with her good looks and her great success, she is still humble. She takes every day as it comes and believes in making the most of what you are given because that is all you can do.
