Dezeen Watch Store: Sol, Shin Azumi‘s solar-powered watch for Japanese brand IDEA, is now available at Dezeen Watch Store.

In contrast with normal solar-powered watches that seek to hide away the photovoltaic cell, Azumi draws attention to the cell by mounting it in Sol’s moulded polyurethane strap to give it the same prominence as the digital display.

The solar cell supplements the watch’s internal battery.

Sol comes in orange, green, black, white and pink.

Sol

The concept of this watch has come from my love of being in the sun. Sunshine provides me with a simple pleasure and gives energy to my body.

The design also shows my expectations and respect for solar power, as a technology that creates a clean source of energy.

Thinking about a typical solar watch, the solar cell is often disguised or hidden away from view. I wanted to put focus on the solar cell as a design feature to express its importance.

Untrod

I wear a product. Beyond fashion or status. This is a new design project which questions existing product typologies.

“Untrod” is the project which challenges to find the product design possibility beyond existing status.

By collaborating with designers who work successfully world-wide, we’ll seek to question existing product typologies and try to give these a new meaning. The first theme is “watch”, but our first point of view is never to see a watch in its conventional form factor. In this project you will meet a new “watch” both in concept and its meaning.
