The sculptural beauty of Burj Khalifa in Dubai has been captured by LEGO® Architecture

BILLUND, Denmark – The LEGO Group has chosen Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building, as the latest eye-catching representative of its LEGO® Architecture series, which celebrates the past, present and future of the worlds’ architecture.

Burj Khalifa, inaugurated on January 4, 2010, towers 828 meters (2,716.5 feet) above Downtown Dubai, Emaar Properties’ flagship development, billed as ‘The Centre of Now,’ in the United Arab Emirates. It is the first model in LEGO Architecture’s Landmark series to represent a building outside the United States.

Designed by Chicago architects Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, and developed by Dubai-based Emaar Properties PJSC, Burj Khalifa has been reproduced in LEGO bricks by Adam Reed Tucker, who has been responsible for the design of all the LEGO Architecture sets.

The aim of the LEGO Architecture series is to highlight and celebrate the worlds of architecture, engineering and construction through the representation of iconic and influential buildings, architects and movements.

“As an architectural artist my desire is to capture the essence of a particular architectural landmark in its pure sculptural form,” says Adam Reed Tucker. “I don’t view my models as literal replicas, but rather my own artistic interpretations through the use of LEGO bricks as a medium.”

The LEGO Burj Khalifa is available for purchase from June 1 in LEGO brand retail stores, LEGOLAND Stores and online at http://shop.lego.com/ and online retailers, as well as at the At the Top, Burj Khalifa retail boutique located in The Dubai Mall.

About Burj Khalifa

A mixed-use tower featuring the world’s first Armani Hotel Dubai and Armani Residences, alongside corporate suites, residences, retail and leisure facilities, Burj Khalifa is at the centre of Downtown Dubai, a 500-acre mega-development by Emaar Properties. Among an array of lifestyle amenities, the tower has a public observation deck – At the Top – on level 124.

Described as ‘The Centre of Now,’ Downtown Dubai encompasses The Dubai Mall, one of the world’s largest shopping and entertainment destinations; several hotels; offices and homes. A stellar attraction within the community is The Dubai Fountain, the world’s tallest performing fountain.

At 828 metres (2,716.5 ft) high, Burj Khalifa is the world’s tallest structure surpassing the KVLY-TV mast (628.8 metres; 2,063 ft) in North Dakota, USA. The tower is taller than Taipei 101 in Taiwan, which at 508 metres (1,667 ft) has held the tallest-building-in-the-world title since it opened in 2004. Burj Khalifa also surpassed the 31-year-old record of CN Tower, which at 553.33 metres (1,815.5 ft) has been the world’s tallest free-standing structure on land since 1976.

Designed by Chicago-based Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM), Burj Khalifa is constructed by high-rise experts South Korea’s Samsung Corporation. New York-based Turner Construction International is the project and construction manager. The tower employs the latest in wind engineering, structural engineering, structural systems, construction materials and construction methods.

The aim of the project, named Habit Makes Us Blind, is to draw attention to the problem of unused spaces in urban environments.

The architects intend the project to promote the spaces for recreational use.

Habit make us blind

Day by day we pass by vacant lots downtown. Just like an invisible metastasis generated in the heart of the city and extending to all its arteries. Neighbourhoods that, although having a huge potential, have more and more unused spaces, a fact that does not at all promote a correct sustainable development. Years have made us immune to this problem. It’s a landscape we already recognise as typical of the central neighbourhoods in Valencia.

Sometimes, the tourists are the ones who open our eyes by mentioning or questioning whether this situation is normal. On other occasions, we pay attention to it for a moment only because the secondary problems that those spaces imply affect us directly. But in most of the cases, they are only a part of our way. Like a gruyere cheese where the rats block any possibilities of reconstruction, while staring at us, far away from its holes.

Habit Makes Us Go Blind by Espai MGR

This photographic work aims at calling people’s attention, just like painting those isolated walls yellow would. It demands the recreational use of those vacant lots through the eyes of a child, by filling them with impossible constructions, surrealistic installations in line with the problem. A children’s game as a neighbour’s shout, demanding the right to take part in their city.
