Karim Rashid Teams with Sully Wong for Dotty Desert Boots

Designer George Sully and sneaker aficionado Henry Wong describe their Toronto-based brand, Sully Wong, as “a North American/Asian culture clash brought to you in a form of a sneaker.” Add to that cross-cultural rumpus the distinctive shapes and jazzy brights favored by Karim Rashid and the result is a sneaker-cum-desert boot that resembles a pair of Keds that stayed too long at the circus. The limited-edition Karim for Sully Wong shoes, which make their official debut at next month’s Magic trade show in Las Vegas and hit stores early next year for $299 per pop pair, will be available in four prints in eight colors, including Rashid’s preferred pink. Pictured here is the Kromo print in “kool blue,” which just happens to be a perfect match for Duchess Kate‘s post-baby Jenny Packham frock.

Hook pans by Karim Rashid for TVS

Product news: the lids of these pans by New York designer Karim Rashid have large, brightly coloured hooks for handles.

The lid handles fold over so they can be grasped easily and latch onto a rail system mounted on the kitchen wall.

The handles of the black aluminium pans have holes in and sit under the lids when stored away, allowing them to hang together from the same rail.

Here’s some more information from TVS:

Hook by Karim Rashid

“The kitchen is the busiest room in any house and contemporary architecture is increasingly making it a feature point, a reception area in the home. This is why the cookware range needs to and can be integrated as a part of the design progress, going on to become the true focus of the room as well as representing the heart and soul of the person who uses it every day.”

He has travelled the highly imaginative universe of “the pan that isn’t there” on a mission for TVS. Karim Rashid, legendary design star with ambitions to change the world (one of the most prolific minds of our time, with over 2000 industrialised designs for interiors, fashions, furnishings, lighting, art and music) that go straight to the heart of our emotions.

Hook pans by Karim Rashid for TVS

And moving on from the simple axiom above, in which today’s new humanism sets the home at the centre of our personal universe – and makes the kitchen the pulsing heart of the home – the result is a curious, irresistible Captain Hook.

Yes, Hook. That is the name of the brilliant new invention by TVS, which has transformed high-gauge aluminium into a complete range of exclusive cookware, with a rich communication potential.

Hook pans by Karim Rashid for TVS

A jaw-dropping effect, created by hanging the pans from the wall using the patented hanging rail and hooks plus eccentric handles in a mix of colours to contrast with the body of the pans. A range that is young at heart, built to be at the centre of any dj – sorry, cooking – set.

Essential, young looking and handy. With its magnetic feel, Hook connects to our lifestyle, bringing with it a large dose of good humour. Space problems are solved and really, all it is missing is a “share” button. TVS fans, modern Peter Pans flying over their lives with the gift of ubiquity, mp3 player in their ears and a wooden spoon in place of a sword, will be thanking Karim as they go.

Float by Karim Rashid for Sancal

Float by Karim Rashid for Sancal

Milan 2012: New York and Amsterdam designer Karim Rashid presented this sofa with modular arms and headrests slotted into a high back at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile this month.

Float by Karim Rashid for Sancal

Called Float, the design for Spanish brand Sancal comes with three different backs and can be upholstered in one colour or a combination of fabrics from the collection called Cairo that Rashid designed especially for Sancal.

The Salone Internazionale del Mobile took place from 17 to 22 April. See all our stories about Milan 2012 here, plus photos on Facebook and Pinterest.

Here’s some more information from Sancal:

Float

A sofa that is also a screen.

Hand in hand with Karim Rashid, we have managed to create a seat that respects our own universe when we cohabit in public spaces. As Virginia Woolf would say, a room of one’s own providing intimacy and freedom.

Float is a contemporary couch designed for multiple purposes. This slim floating seat with incorporated back wall provides complete privacy in open spaces, to rest back on, hang one’s scarf or coat on or simply wait in the secluded area given by its high back.

One of the main characteristics of Karim’s designs is their colourful combinations, which at first sight seem not possible. Sancal products, on the other hand, are less vibrant. Float offers the perfect balance, as we have granted greater relevance to the textures and reserved the touches of colour for smaller detail such as the headrest or cushions.

Each Float component (arms, seat, back and headrest) can be selected in a different fabric. There is also a single colour option, upholstered with the same fabric.

Float is available in 3 sizes: two sofas with a low back and one sofa with a high back. The latter offers different combinations: apart from the straight arms, you can choose an inclined arm to lie back on like a divan. Furthermore, two hangers can be attached to the high back as if as it were a wall.

As for the cushions and headrests, Karim has also designed a series of patterns named Cairo. The collection is inspired in Egypt, where he was born. With a strong contemporary approach, Karim unites tradition and personal memories, adding bright colours to pictures of organic geometry.

University of Naples Metro Station by Karim Rashid

Naples Metro Station by Karim Rashid

New York designer Karim Rashid has renovated the University of Naples subway station in Naples, Italy.

Naples Metro Station by Karim Rashid

Commuters pass between huge columns with the profiles of faces towards a shifting lenticular wall of graphic patterns.

Naples Metro Station by Karim Rashid

Sculptures and graphic artworks line the escalators, leading to platforms with backlit patterns on the walls.

Naples Metro Station by Karim Rashid

The information below is from Karim Rashid:

The University of Naples subway station is highly trafficked by a multi-cultural, academic community of thousands of passengers a day.

Naples Metro Station by Karim Rashid

A creative concept that communicates and embodies knowledge in the new digital age, language in the shrinking global landscape, innovation and mobility in this third technological revolution.

Naples Metro Station by Karim Rashid

Naples is no longer a historic southern city of Italy but instead now is an integral intellectual information haven that extends itself throughout the rest of the world.

Naples Metro Station by Karim Rashid

This is the changing Italy and the station is a metaphor of this new wired global condition. It integrates the station with its surroundings, as well as provides a platform for innovative, cutting-edge design strategy.

Naples Metro Station by Karim Rashid

We utilize the descension from the piazza to the subway platforms to represent a metaphorical shift from the conscious brain to the spiritual mind. Experiencing this journey, the commuter is able to define one’s own experience by interpreting the individual shift from a busy “brain state” to a focused “mind state”.

Naples Metro Station by Karim Rashid

Entering into the station from the piazza to the subway station, the visitor will walk though a space clad with tiles, each one with is printed with new words created in this last century. Once the visitor arrives in the station lobby, he/she is impacted by the soft nature of the space, the striking palette of colors and patterns.

Naples Metro Station by Karim Rashid

Along the back wall of the station lobby level, lenticular iconography changing colors and perspective provides an interesting siteline as commuters proceed to the platforms below. Intersecting the space between the heads profile benches (metaphorically intersecting the dialogue) is an abstracted, SYNPOSIS sculpture reflecting the nodes of the brain and the synapses which occur within.

Naples Metro Station by Karim Rashid

When descending to the subway platforms via escalator, a visitor experiences a transition from the busy piazza to a more intimate, focused environment. It is here where we display various artworks and other graphic art as a focal point. These abstract images invoke the user to shape the environment according to his/her own creative interpretations.

Naples Metro Station by Karim Rashid

Rolling LED programming situated behind frosted glass displays universally recognized words, referencing knowledge and the multicultural university setting.

Naples Metro Station by Karim Rashid

Descending and ascending the stairwells on each respective platform, the steps have abstracted portraits of Dante and Beatrice. Once the commuter arrives at the end of the escalator, transformational digital art follows he/she to the platform stairways. The accent colors, lime and pink, indicates the direction and guide visitors through the descent to the final destination.

Naples Metro Station by Karim Rashid

Airframe surfaces speak about the beauty of our airframe voxels of the flux and ever dynamic multidimensional information and data age (infostethiks).

Naples Metro Station by Karim Rashid

The platform level of the subway station is where the people spend the most static time. One’s experience while waiting for the subway is enhanced by the tranquil, imaginative environment of the “mindstate”. Seating is provided in the form of landscape forms.

Naples Metro Station by Karim Rashid

The back wall of the subway platform is a backlit artwork, providing a continuous soft glow in the space. Across the platform, digital artwork creates an entertaining distraction. In addition to related iconography, the piece could include a shadow of an oncoming train, etc. to signify a train’s arrival.

Naples Metro Station by Karim Rashid

A subway station is a temporal, transitional space, yet the commuter is contained for a short period of time before continuing his/her journey.

Naples Metro Station by Karim Rashid

As he/she transitions from one environment to another, he/she is most likely reviewing the day’s previous events, or preparing for the next task. Our concept focuses on the commuter experience within the train station, and how the surrounding environment can serve as a respite in a day’s schedule.

Hellraiser by Karim Rashid for Alessi

Here’s a bit of text from Alberto Alessi:

There are two Rashids: the architect (Hani) and the designer (Karim). We’ve worked with both of them.

Hellraiser by Karim Rashid for Alessi

With the first (timid and reserved) we produced a collection of desk objects, “Parq”, “Scup”, “Trina” and “Stila”, the “Trianava” vase, the “Arc” wristwatch and the “Ares” pen.

Hellraiser by Karim Rashid for Alessi

With the second (extroverted and even overly outgoing) the “Kaj” wristwatch and the projects we’re announcing today: harsh and metropolitan (an interesting contrast to his usual soft and rounded language), as soon as I saw them, I spontaneously called them “Hellraiser”.

The information that follows is from Freedom Of Creation:

Karim Rashid designs Cross lamp for Freedom Of Creation

Freedom Of Creation, Dutch company for innovative design editions realized through advanced 3D printing technologies pioneered by FOC itself, starts the New Year and its second decade since its foundation with a prestigious collaboration. Polyhedral star designer Karim Rashid has conceived the amazing “Cross” lamp for Freedom Of Creation (FOC), launched on the occasion of IMM furniture fair. Karim Rashid is one of the most prolific designers of his generation.

“I thought to make a hyper-collage of my icons as a lit object, in changing scale and mass to create diverse shadows and light filtration, to really make one overriding blobular 3-d cross form, which is my symbol for Globalove,” says Karim Rashid regarding his astonishing “Cross” table, floor and suspension lamp designed for FOC. The 3D Cross is composed of an infinite number of small icons alluding to Karim’s most famous and iconic forms.

“CROSS Lamp”: A suggestive “cross-shaped” lamp – available in suspended and table versions – made up of the agglomeration of Karim Rashid’s most memorable icons. The cross form is Karim Rashid’s symbol for Globalove.
