December chair by Jasper Morrison and Wataru Kumano for Nikari

London Design Festival 2013: British designer Jasper Morrison and Japanese designer Wataru Kumano have designed a self-assembly chair with a linen seat and backrest (+ slideshow).

December chair by Jasper Morrison and Wataru Kumano for Nikari

Morrison and Kumano created the December chair for Finnish manufacturer Nikari. The firm commissioned designers to produce a wooden product or piece of furniture for each day of the month as part of its 12 Designs for Nature project, which also featured work by Alfredo Häberli, Martí Guixé and Harri Koskinen.

The chair comprises an ash wood frame and a linen seat and backrest. It is intended to work in a country home, city apartment or hotel lobby, according to the designers.

Morrison and Kumano wanted to create a chair that could be bought in a box and built at home by following simple instructions.

“The core of the design is the seat frame which is already assembled, to which the legs and backrest structure are attached with a combination of screwing and gluing,” Morrison explained.

“It’s a basic but comfortable low chair with a slightly rural character and definite Scandinavian influence,” he added.

The chair was displayed during London Design Festival at Morrison’s temporary Library of Design at his east London shop, alongside his Fionda chair for Mattiazzi and Palma cookware for Oigen.

When designing the watch, Morrison used Irving Penn’s iconic 1994 photographs of Miyake’s collection as a starting point. “I visited the 21-21 Design Site Exhibition of Penn’s photos for Miyake and was overwhelmed by how Penn managed to capture the spirit of Miyake’s clothes in his photos,” said Morrison. “I decided to do my best to capture some of that spirit for this new watch.”

Park Life folding armchair by Jasper Morrison for Kettal

Milan 2013: British designer Jasper Morrison has added a folding armchair to his Park Life collection of outdoor furniture for Spanish design brand Kettal.

Like the other pieces in the Park Life range, launched last year for Kettal, the armchair has an aluminium frame that is both lightweight and durable.

Jasper Morrison designed the chair with a cross-bracing hinge beneath the seat, which allows it to fold flat for easy storage.

The seat and backrest are made from porotex, a fabric made of PVC-coated polyester.

Morrison presented the new Park Life chair at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan last week alongside Village, another outdoor chair for Kettal. See more furniture by Kettal on Dezeen.

The designer also presented a chair inspired by camping furniture for Italian brand Mattiazzi. See more design by Jasper Morrison on Dezeen, including the iconic 1986 Side Table and the 2007 Crate Series.

Park Life is a complete family of furniture for outdoors, whose clean cut profile is adaptable to a wide range of different situations. Lightweight, yet extremely durable, it’s easily stacked for transport or winter storage and its technical sophistication and careful consideration of ergonomics besides a lot of care over how it looks are all intended to ensure a long life, both structurally and visually.

Fionda chair by Jasper Morrison for Mattiazzi

Milan 2013: British designer Jasper Morrison will present a chair inspired by camping furniture for Italian brand Mattiazzi in Milan next week.

Fionda chair by Jasper Morrison for Mattiazzi

Called Fionda, which means “sling” in Italian, the chair by Jasper Morrison is composed of a folding wooden frame and a loose canvas seat that hooks over the corners and can be removed to enable the chairs to be stacked horizontally.

The chair will be available as a dining chair or a lounge chair and there will also be a matching stackable table.

It will be exhibited by Mattiazzi at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan from 9 to 14 April.

Other chairs launching at Milan next week include the Scoop chair by Danish designers KiBiSi and these armchairs with wavy backs and seats by Spanish designer Patricia Urquiola.

Here’s some more information from Jasper Morrison:

Fionda’s mother is a folding camping chair, which itself comes from a long line of chairs known variously as BKF, Hardoy, Butterfly or Tripolina in Italy, all of which suspend a canvas sling from a frame to create a surprisingly comfortable seat. I bought one of the camping chairs in Japan and liked having it in my living room, but the aluminium X bars at the front and back were uncomfortable and prevented it being a real living room chair, so I decided to make a project out of removing the X’s.

I am attracted to the language of camping and campaign furniture. It’s something about the lightness of structure and required efficiency in achieving something comfortable which fits well in today’s mood. The frame needed a number of steps to perfect the joint but the result is light and strong, and can be stacked horizontally with the covers off.

There are two chair models, a dining chair and a lounge chair, and a table which is also stackable. It’s a chair for using inside or taking outside, for interiors which don’t need so much upholstery, and for the traveller who just got home and needs a rest!

Here’s some more information from the designers:

Park Life by Jasper Morrison and Kettal

“This is my first outdoor collection and it has taken some time to get here: about four and a half years! It probably took that long because we needed to discover the right codes for Outdoor Furniture, which is a category apart from other types of furniture. It has been an interesting process and we have been through many prototypes to get here but I think the result justifies the effort.

Bench Years by Established & Sons at the V&A museum

London Design Festival: Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby, Jasper Morrison and AL_A are among the designers who have created benches with British design brand Established & Sons for the central courtyard of the V&A museum (+slideshow).

The Bench Years by Established and Sons

Each of the one-off benches is made from a different material and produced in collaboration with a company specialising in that material. After being on display for the festival they’ll be auctioned off and the money fed back to fund next year’s London Design Festival commissions.

The Bench Years by Established and Sons

Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby, the designers of the Olympic torch, made a marble bench with holes bored through (above) in collaboration with Italian studio Tor Art. They were inspired by shrapnel marks left in the V&A museum’s western facade after the Second World War. “It’s something that always fascinated me and Ed on the way from South Kensington tube up to the Royal College when we were students, and so when this project came up we thought it was a nice way to reference that,” explained Jay Osgerby at the opening.

The Bench Years by Established and Sons

AL_A, the architecture practice led by Amanda Levete, worked with Barcelona ceramics company Ceramica Cumella to come up with a bench (above) made of overlapping tiles, glazed with colours inspired by the museum’s ceramics collections. AL_A is also designing a new subterranean gallery for the museum.

The Bench Years by Established and Sons

British designer Alexander Taylor made a bench from mirror-polished stainless steel cylinders (above) with steel specialists Caparo. He explained that making perfect cylinders in steel is tricky because “the material is extruded with an oval profile so it has to be cut and put back together again.”

The Bench Years by Established and Sons

Italian designer Martino Gamper built a wooden bench (above) from slanted planks of thermally modified hardwood, treated to improve its stability and resistance to decay. The angled stripes of red oak, maple, ash, yellow birch and tulipwood provided by the American Hardwood Export Council create an “optical illusion” and “somehow give the impression of animation” said Gamper, adding that the modular system can be extended to any length.

The Bench Years by Established and Sons

British designer Jasper Morrison collaborated with concrete specialists lowinfo to create a concrete bench (above) with narrow runnels along the seat that allow rain water to drain away despite the seat being curved for comfort, while German designer Konstantin Grcic worked with Italian company Bisazza on a glass mosaic bench (below).

The Bench Years by Established and Sons

Portugese designer Fernando Brizio created a cork bench in the shape of a pig’s foot (below) with Amorim Cork.

The Bench Years by Established and Sons

British designer Felix de Pass produced a cream-coloured sheet-steel bench (below) with perforations that help water drain away and disperse heat from the sun. It’s an adaptation of his bench that’s already in production with Established & Sons.

The Bench Years by Established and Sons

Sam Hecht and Kim Colin from Industrial Facility worked with Corian, a material often used for kitchen worktops, to create two benches (below) that mimic the marble plinths found inside the museum.

The Bench Years by Established and Sons

Sadly the final bench in the collection, created by Italian designer Luca Nichetto and glass manufacturer Nardo Vetro, was broken in transit.

Other installations at the V&A during the London Design Festival include Keiichi Matsuda’s data visualisation and chairs by Nendo scattered around the museum.
