The Power of Cross X

The Cross X is a low-cost hybrid bicycle designed for the rapidly urbanizing countries. It hopes to be that mode of transport, which is cost-effective, traffic beating and personal. Its potential in two contexts – medical emergencies and large campuses; I’m thinking campuses like Apple or Google, perhaps!

Details:

  • The hybrid design of Cross X means electric power can help paramedics to reach to such remote areas in time.
  • Paramedics can store a medical emergency response kit in the built-in storage compartment of Cross X; also they can use its battery power to operate communication and other devices.
  • Corporates and big colleges are converting their campuses into sustainable ones through a reduction in fossil fuel usage.
  • The ergonomic design of Cross X will make riding stress free and enjoyable for staff and students.

Cross X is a 2013 Red Dot Award: Design Concept Winner.

Touareg Rare Beast

Volkswagen offers the first-ever supercharged hybrid SUV in a luxurious limited edition
supercharge4.jpg

Taking advantage of a sunny day in New York City, we recently put Volkswagen’s new 2011 Supercharged Hybrid Touareg to the test on a trip to Brooklyn for some of the best pizza in town.

VW describes this limited edition Touareg as “a rare beast” that can be likened to the white buffalo—strong, silent, and few in numbers. With panoramic glass consuming almost the entire roof we got full views of skyscrapers, bridges and beautiful open sky. When combined with the rest of the luxurious interior, riding around in this “beast” is definitely like no other journey.

Its highly responsive navigation system—one of our favorites—features a large full-color touchscreen that allows the driver to choose between 2D or 3D navigation. Once you’ve programmed where to go, the jamming sound system and iPod-friendly stereo let passengers sit back and enjoy the smooth ride.

While admittedly lower in mpg when compared to a compact car, the Supercharged Hybrid offers 20-24 mpg, similar to that of the TDi model. Its start-stop system saves gas when idle, and regenerative breaks recoup kinetic energy that help charge the battery. While not boasting as much torque as its diesel counterpart, the tuned suspension makes for a fun, sporty ride, and its powerful engine really helps when you’ve got a car full of gear.

We’re proud that Volkswagon chose to sponsor our Cool Hunting iPad app (iTunes link) as a way to launch this new car. Download the free app and check out some exclusive Rare Beast content.

Packed with every imaginable amenity, the Supercharged Hybrid Touareg is ideal for family vacations and urban escapes alike. To get your hands on one, contact a VW dealer near you.

Hybrid Halogen/CFL bulb

Nike HTM2

Nike HTM2 Low and Hi

Mark Parker, Hiroshi Fujiwara and Tinker Hatfield have been collaborating for nearly ten years on the HTM series of Nike sneakers which are among the most coveted by collectors. During a recent conversation in Tokyo Parker stated that their mission has always been “to push the limits on style and performance and try some things that might not come out of the company naturally thru the main stream creative process.” Their latest project, the HTM2, takes this goal to a new level.

The 2 in HTM2 is for Mark Smith, Creative Director of the Jordan brand and guest collaborator on this project. The initial design for the shoe, a hybrid between performance gear and casual-wear, came from Smith and was evolved by the team. “It’s an unusual shoe, very different from the normal, classic sneaker. It’s a slip-on using Free performance technology brought to everyday lifestyle with a look that’s very different from a normal running or basketball based shoe,” describes Parker. The fit is surprisingly snug and supportive for a slip-on and the Free sole affords maximum flexibility. The stenciled Swoosh is a nice touch and each of the four collaborators designed their own HTM2 logo, some of which you’ll see in our gallery.

Parker mentioned that this is the first in a new wave of collaborations for the HTM team. Available in both low and hi styles and several colorways, the HTM2 is available at Nike Sportswear stores in New York and Tokyo starting Monday 1 March 2010.
