Sea-Inspired Accessories Help Turn Your Home Into A Beachside Escape!

imageIs there anything more relaxing than a tranquil stay at a beach-front home? While it may be hard to venture off to a seaside escape, bringing under-the-sea-inspired home decor and the soothing colors of the ocean into your own living space is easily doable and beneficial to everyone. While an under-the-sea theme usually conjures up the bright colors and cartoon-like sea creatures reminiscent of Disney movies and kids’ birthday parties, putting a more tasteful spin on things is easy! Subtle home accessories, peaceful colors and rich, quality materials make you home into a mini-beach front getaway, even if you live in the middle of the city. Click on the slideshow to see some stylish sea-inspired home accents that will help turn your space into a calm and charming Octopus’s Garden!

Hot In The Hive: Alessi ‘Carlo’ Ghost Bottle Cap

imageYou’re never too old to celebrate Halloween! While you may not be looking for a crazy costume party to go crash, a ghoulish get-together with friends may be just the thing for some Halloween fun. The decor is done, the scarily tasty menu has been decided and your outfit for your Halloween night is appropriately black and orange. A few bottles of wine to pop open and you’re all set. Don’t forget to grab Carlo! He’s a ghostly little guy that is too cute to be scary and loves to sit on top or your wine bottles as a festive bottle cap (if, for some reason, you don’t finish all the wine in one night). Designed by Alessi, the Carlo bottle cap comes in a variety of colors and is cheap enough so you can buy a few to add to your Halloween fun. You did finish all the wine? They’re just as cute and festive sitting around the table and mingling with the guests!

Price: $9.00

Get Your Own “Little Miss Lanvin” Doll

imageJeanne Lanvin founded the fashion house we know as Lanvin in 1889. In 2001, Alber Elbaz took over as artistic director and the house has never been the same since. His designs grace the red carpet and hang in fashionista’s closets everywhere. Along with the gorgeous gowns, he incorporates cute “Little Miss Lanvin” illustrations on some cheeky t-shirts and sweaters. Now they’re stepping into 3-D. Lanvin has partnered up with the porcelain company Franz to make “Little Miss Lanvin” dolls. Each season there will be 6 new limited edition porcelain dolls, with just 800 released. Priced at $345 each, they each come packaged in Lanvin’s signature pale blue box. The idea is homage to Jeanne Lanvin’s part in the post-war Theatre de la Mode show, in which French couturiers showcased their designs through miniature dolls, due to the lack of fabric. Spring ’08 and Spring ’09 dolls are out now, and the newest collection will be out soon. Check www.franzcollection.com to find out where you can buy them!

Hot In The Hive: Witches’ Kitchen Casserole Cauldron

imageDouble, double, toil and trouble! Concoct the perfect witches’ brew (or a totally harmless casserole that’s just frighteningly festive) this Halloween season with the Witches’ Kitchen Casserole Bowl from Unica. The black ceramic bowl can also be used as a regular serving bowl (snacks, candy, spooky side dishes — you name it!) and is part of a sustainable line of limited-edition goods produced from eco-friendly materials. Sure, it’s a little costly, but it’s not so garishly Halloween-ish that you’d be forced to hide it in the cupboard until next year. It’s universally sleek and stylish for kitchenware, but with the right seasonal decor and the perfect pointed hat, it’s potion-ready!

Price: $360

Travel Around The World In The Comfort Of Your Own Home!

imageIt’s time to spice things up at home, and not just in the bedroom either! While we would all love to be jet-setters and fly off to exotic places halfway across the world, it is not a possibility for many of us due to money, time or both. Although the mysticism of far away lands may be enticing, but not quite within reach at the moment, these sumptuous luxuries and richly saturated materials can be brought back and enjoyed in your own home. With ethnic African and safari-inspired prints that make your living area feel like a trip to the savannah, richly saturated and beautifully decorated rugs and home accents that make you feel like you’re laying back in a Persian palace, and the minimalist sophistication of Asian-inspired pieces that help give you a peaceful and meditative state, you can take a trip around the world in the comfort of your own home. Hot In The Hive: Jonathan Adler Mr. and Mrs. Muse Salt And Pepper Shakers

imageThese days, I’m getting invited to fewer wild parties and going to more subdued wedding showers and housewarming parties instead. Well… they seem more subdued until someone drinks one too many wine coolers and the rest is Facebook infamy. Anyway, the point of the story is that I’m no longer expected to bring a six-pack of cheap beer. Instead, I have to buy a real gift that they’ll actually want to use. That’s why I’ve been falling back on the creative genius of designer Jonathan Adler and buying all his cute creations. My latest find is the Mr. and Mrs. Muse salt and pepper shakers. These super adorable salt and pepper shakers is a great choice for a housewarming or hostess gift for any quirky friends you may have. As the night wanes and I have the urge to be a little immature, I can always bring the two shakers together and have them make kissy faces. Please, don’t tell me you didn’t think of that too!

Too Old For Trick-Or-Treating? Try These Tasty Halloween Treats!

imageBesides my own birthday, Halloween has always been my favorite holiday. Halloween is a holiday like something straight out of a Tim Burton/ Charles Dickens special: the costumes, the parties, the mystery, the lighthearted pranks that we all pulled on each other … and the best part of it is the sugary treats that make the tricks a little sweeter. Fun-sized classic candy bars are still great, but now that we’re a little older, the door-to-door inquiry for candies, while would probably be just as fun, is much less appropriate. Luckily for us, though, although being older means no more trick-or-treating, it does mean great parties, smaller costumes and Halloween treats much better than even full sized chocolate bars dropped into your pillow case. Check out the slide-show to see some frighteningly fabulous Halloween treats that’ll really amaze your guests!

Hot In The Hive: Flat Flower Vases

imageI bet you’re the type of person who gets lots of flowers delivered to you on a regular basis. Whether it’s your significant other sending a dozen roses to celebrate your anniversary or your best friends delivering a birthday bouquet, your home always smells like a garden. So I can also understand why you’ve also run out of vases to store the beautiful flowers. I’ve seen makeshift vases from small mason jars, milk boxes, and even wine bottles. While those options may do its job, it certainly doesn’t do the flowers (or the giver) any justice! Then again, it’s not like we have tons of storage space for glass vases under the kitchen sink. Well, I’ve found a perfect solution and they’re called Flat Flower Vases! These vinyl vases lie flat, but when you need to use them, just fill it up with water and you’re ready to go.

Add Some Charm To Your Fall Kitchen With A Teapot!

imageInstead of waking up to the smell of freshly brewed coffee in the morning, I like to pour myself a cup of hot tea and enjoy some buttered toast. Maybe I was British in a past life or maybe it’s the fact that coffee has the opposite effect on me, but I do love tea. However, even the best tea leaves need to be brought to their full potential with piping hot water. That’s why a whistling teakettle full of boiling water poured into a teapot with tea leaves–never tea bags–can be almost as relaxing as a day at a spa. If you still have an old one your mom passed onto you that’s full of nicks and dents, it’s high time for an upgrade. One of my favorite and affordable options is this classic stainless steel teakettle from World Market, a steal at less than $20. If you’re looking to splurge, this teakettle designed by Frank Gehry for Alessi is a design snob’s dream. I even found some electric kettles so you don’t have to watch over the stove. And of course, these tea kettles can also be used to heat up water for your instant noodle cups. Check out my slideshow for more teakettles that will have you whistling while you work too!
