A Backcountry Skier’s Best Friend

Surprisingly, most backcountry skiers who die in avalanches aren’t killed by the sheer destructive power of the avalanche itself… but because they suffocate while buried under snow. The Aeros helmet is one simple & quick way to make survival more likely in the event of an avalanche. It not only protects the head & neck from injury, but creates an air pocket in front of the face so the wearer can breathe, offering more time for victims to activate other safety gear & for rescuers to locate those who are buried.

Protective Patterns

Skateboarding is cool, but, unfortunately, protective gear like knee pads and helmets just aren’t! They lack aesthetic appeal and are often too difficult and time consuming to put on… causing many to avoid protecting their body at all. The PLEXUS collection of gear finds safety, flexibility, ventilation, performance and cool looks in an intricate voronoi web that adapts to the wearers movement. Who would’ve guessed that the application of this simple pattern would be such a huge improvement!

Helmets Private Collection

Le studio de graphisme français BMD rend publique sa collection privée de casques au design résolument old school. Entre un style biker américain, un certain chauvinisme et une typographie inspirée des années 1930, le mélange est très réussi. La collection en images dans la suite de l’article.

Holy Smoke!

C-Thru is a helmet that is designed to help firefighter walk through dense smoke during smoke diving search and rescue missions. Time constrains of six minutes per mission, makes it imperative that the gear is optimal. C-thru gives them the edge thanks to the wire-frame vision of the interior geometry, surrounding the smoke diver. Using technological enhancements, the helmet provides a visual map of the interiors so that it becomes easy for the firefighter to locate the victims.

This is how it works:

  • C-Thru’s vision system integrates many technologies to aid firefighters, such as a head-mounted projection display, optical thermal camera, cloud computing, selective active noise cancellation and target acquisition.
  • The optical thermal camera captures the imaging of the surrounding area and sends the data to the smoke diver leader’s handheld device.
  • The data is calculated there and sent back to the helmet.
  • Newly generated 3D wire-frame data is projected by the head-mounted projectors through the retro-reflective front visor of the helmet.
  • This wire-frame outline of their surroundings helps firefighters find a path through the building and locate victims.

Urban Cyclist’s Dream Come True

While many folding helmets are designed with a number of complex hard-folds from front to back, this twist on the safety solution is collapsible down the middle. An origami-like system of honeycomb folds compress from left to right, making it just slightly wider than a medium-size book and slim enough to carry in a backpack with room to spare. Simply stretch it out to the appropriate size and throw it on to protect your noggin!

Safer Speed Skating

Accidents in speed skating are dangerous for everyone. A skater who falls basically becomes a razor-sharp ninja star, just as liable to be struck by other skaters as to hit someone else. Unfortunately, this sport’s helmet style hasn’t undergone much change over the years and existing designs tend to be uncomfortable and less practical for both safety and aerodynamics. See how the smashable, strapless, uber-cool Aguille helmet changes the game. —-

The challenge was to make the athlete faster and safer, but also improve air circulation without going outside the rules of the sports.

Personal research has also shown that the chinstrap is uncomfortable for the athlete. Mock-ups tested on the athlete also showed measurable improvements in comfort and performance once the helmet adapted a strapless design.

It improves aerodynamics through an innovative flexible structure, which allows an active crumble zone. This crumble zone can absorb the impact and then goes back into its actual shape. New protective materials absorb the force of the impact rather than distributing it.

The Ultimate Helmet… Period.

Um… why doesn’t this already exist? It’s just… pain… genius. Ideal for urban cyclists, the DORA helmet works in tandem with adaptable Bluetooth handlebar controls to give surrounding vehicles notice of the rider’s intent to turn or brake with universally recognizable light signals and colors. While it’s a great safety solution for the average cyclist, there’s also potential for an adaptation to motorcyclist helmets and the like. Check out the 360 after the jump!
