New York Fashion Week F/W 2010: The Heart Truth Red Dress Collection

imageA red dress is never forgotten, which is why The Heart Truth has designated the red dress as the national symbol for women and heart disease awareness. Every year since its launch eight years ago, the Red Dress has taken to the runways in a celebrity-filled fashion show. Select dresses from the collection are then auctioned off to the public, the proceeds of which will benefit the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health to increase awareness and fund research for women’s heart health (heart disease is currently the #1 killer of women in the United States.) This year’s show featured models and celebs painting the runways red in crimson dresses of every style imaginable, from figure-hugging to flouncy. There was certainly no shortage of attitude- bright smiles and effervescent poses added a refreshing twist to the usual fashion week fare.

See the slideshow for a glimpse at the collection, and let it inspire you to take care our your heart- it’s the best Valentine’s Day gift you could give yourself! Then, click over to Elle to even more from The Heart Truth Red Dress Collection.

Rosa Cha Debuts Their Fall/Winter 2010 Collection During Sao Paulo Fashion Week

imageRosa Cha designs are usually associated with unique swimsuits and bikinis that are fun and sexy, but what happens when it’s not summer anymore? Rosa Cha has transformed their designs seamlessly to light and breezy to more appropriate for the colder weather. This was the label’s first time showing in Brazil since new creative director and designer Alexandre Herchcovitch took over, and the new runway collection did not disappoint. Models strutted the catwalk in retro lingerie-inspired swimsuits and separates, as well as tailored skirts and blazers featuring expert draping and lace overlays. The pieces celebrated the female form, showing curves, but still staying sophisticated and original. Sexy cutouts, strategic paneling and bare midriffs in black, neutrals and multi-color patterns were given even more of an edge with exposed zippers and straps. The collection featured everything from lacy lingerie, innovative separates and colorfully modern diving suits while keeping with a common look and theme. Says Herchcovitch, “This is a fundamental moment for us to be able to use the brand’s DNA in a larger number of pieces that go from fitness, spa, and the beach, to outwear,” and the new F/W 2010 Rosa Cha collection does just that. Socks And Sandals Are Stylish (Together!) For Spring

imagePairing tights and socks with sandals… are you crazy? Maybe I am, but designers have been sending this look down the runways for seasons now and it’s a great way to get out of a winter boot rut! Besides, black opaques go from basic to killer when worn with seriously aggressive platforms and mini skirt. Looking to make your sandals look even more cozy? Try textured tights, like a fine ribbed wool pair. For evening, experiment with semi-sheer tights or ones with a slight pattern like swiss dots. Stay out of granny territory by avoiding anything too sheer or nude. Whatever you choose, keep the shoes and the tights in the same color family to create the illusion of one long line. Whether it’s all blacks or all electric blue is up too you! Once the weather starts to turn a bit milder, try swapping out tights for socks. Burberry Prorsum and Rochas showed models wearing scrunched down socks with sandals. Keep the socks and the shoes a nude or beige color to keep from shortening your leg too much. Now that you’ve got the legwear down, you can’t just throw on any old sandal. Opt for tall, chunky heeled or platform sandals; you’ll need them to balance out the heft of the tights. Anything too strappy and delicate will be overwhelmed. Check out the slideshow for some shoes and tights perfect for this transitional look!

What’s Next For Alexander Wang?

imageYou all know Alexander Wang by now, the fashion wunderkind who started his namesake line by his second year of design school in 2007. In 2008 he conquered the shoe and handbag market- how’s an 800 person waiting list for proof? In 2009, he added t-shirts with his coveted knitwear line T by Alexander Wang. What’s next– world domination? Maybe not quite, but as far as we’re concerned he’s getting pretty close. With the success of his T line, he’s adding more styles that go beyond the perfectly fitted slouchy tee and tank. He is debuting some men’s styles too– think well-worn t-shirts, casual tanks and button-downs, and some cool leather shorts. As if that isn’t enough to have our tails wagging, Spring 2010 also brings us a new line of shades in collaboration with Linda Farrow, which Wang unveiled during his Sept fashion week show. Check out the slideshow to see some of the sunglasses and men’s looks!

Paris Fashion Week: Chanel RTW Spring/Summer 2010

imageKarl Lagerfeld transformed the Grand Palais into a rustic barn setting for the Spring 2010 ready-to-wear show at Paris Fashion Week, and managed to switch out at least part of his signature uniform for- gasp- jeans– perhaps hinting at the lighthearted display to come. Models emerged from the barn dressed in springy versions of iconic Chanel tweed separates and frothy chiffon frocks paired with high heeled clogs and platform heels. Colors were subdued- black, white, and versions of taupe and cream made up the palette- and thus the focus remained on texture and form. Lagerfeld left the idea of wholesome, raised on the farm innocence far behind – the girls sported tattoos giving the illusion of thigh-high stockings, skirts were slit well through the thigh, and beehive buns were a tiny bit tousled as if to suggest a recent romp in the hay (pun not intended). Choosing such a strong theme is difficult as you run the risk of falling into a cliche, but Lagerfeld’s execution kept the focus mostly on the clothes, and everything else was an accessory whose role was to accentuate and not distract- this is the essence of ready-to-wear, after all. The overall mood was whimsical and relaxed, striking a fine balance between luxury and accessibility and reminding us why we appreciate luxury fashion in the first place. Janet Jackson And Rihanna Sit Front Row At Jean Paul Gaultier’s Paris Fashion Week Show

imageJean Paul Gaultier’s spring/summer 2010 show at Paris Fashion Week was certainly star-studded, with personalities from Rihanna and Janet Jackson to Catherine Deneuve in attendance. All wore pieces from the designer’s ready to wear line, a favorite of which was Katy Perry’s taffeta halter strap dress with a sheer paneled hemline. Both Jackson and Deneuve donned Gaultier’s silk and taffeta trench coats, in rich khaki and citrus green, and Rihanna effortlessly pulled off the designer’s bondage coat, complete with straps across the front (and not much else). Other front row fans included famed photographer Patrick Demarchelier, burlesque star Dita von Teese, and Igor Vadim (Deneuve’s grandson). Our Top 10 Looks From Cibeles Madrid Fashion Week!

imageThere is so much more to fashion than what comes down the runways in London, Paris, and Milan, and if you need further proof, take a look at the talent exhibited by designers who showed collections at Cibeles Madrid Fashion Week. A quick look through a couple of collections left me with the impression that the focus was on expression rather than the creation of a future trend, and collections are much more imaginative as a result– I’m guessing not having Anna, Carine, and company perched in the front row has something to do with that, and it’s immensely refreshing. From lingerie-inspired looks at Alberto Tous to the explosion of color that is the Agatha Ruiz De La Prada show, I was definitely impressed. Take a look at my slideshow to see the Spanish designers you’ll want to keep an eye on come Spring!

Fashion Week London: Luella Bartley Spring 2010 Ready to Wear Collection

imageLuella Bartley recently presented her Spring 2010 Ready to Wear Collection at London Fashion Week. Her new collection goes dressier and less cheeky than we’ve come to expect from Bartley. It would be easy to imagine the late Jackie Kennedy wearing these pieces in 1965. Silhouettes were very feminine, with princess seams, pinched waists, and padded hips. She also showed several summer weight car coats in very ladylike “trapeze” shapes in happy, gorgeous colors, like a not-too-baby blue and a wonderful lipstick-y red. Other pieces included puffy dresses with velvet polka dots, sweetheart necklines, and Peter Pan collars. Bartley’s recent collections have been far more precious with an abundance of frilly touches like dainty flower prints, ribbons, and tulle. By comparison, the latest collection is much more dressed up, despite the sugar pinks and lemon yellows. Even the one or two dresses with tulle trim appeared more sophisticated than one might expect from a designer who does things in an unapologetically girly way.
