New York Fashion Week F/W 2010: ADAM

imageDesigner Adam Lippes’ Fall 2010 collection was inspired by a painting by Isca Greenfield-Sanders that featured a parachute floating downward into a darkness. This inspiration catapulted a collection that played with color and texture. A recurring theme I saw was the mix of long airy chiffon skirts with knit sweaters. Metallic accents are becoming a common sight for next fall, as suggested by metallic embroidery across a fitted bustier dress or as a shoulder accent. One of my favorite pieces of outerwear I’ve seen so far at the tents was an olive grey anorak with coyote fur lining. Since this Fashion Week has been the coldest I’ve experienced in New York, I expect many chic women will gravitate towards that jacket or many of his other fur lined outerwear. All the models sported fishtail braids with a slight poof on top of their crown that almost mimics a mohawk. The makeup reflected the earthtones of the collection with sweeps of brown eyeshadow over the eyelids.

New York Fashion Week F/W 2010: Andy & Debb

imageAndy & Debb, founded by design duo Andy Kim and Debbie Yoon, is a fairly young company that made its debut in the United States in Fall 2009, after starting their label in Seoul in 1999. Their Fall 2010 collection featured lots of leather, large buckles, and luxurious furs. While I’m not a huge fan of fur, I was impressed with the unique way of using the controversial material. A few mink coats were tiered in a way that looked like shingles of a house! Another favorite of mine was the gingko biloba leaf prints, shown on a jacket and dress. Like a lot of shows this season, metallic accents, sequins, and anything that shimmers is still in full force for next fall. Similarly, it’s all about the no makeup look with just highlights on the cheeks and natural pink lips.

Trends: Sculptural furs, nature inspired prints, cropped pants, metallic accents

New York Fashion Week F/W 2010: Alexander Wang

imageEvery fashion week, there are standout designers whose artful renditions of past and present trends undoubtedly set the course for the upcoming season. For more than a few seasons now, Alexander Wang has been one such designer. His fall/winter collection was decidedly more refined than in previous seasons, but rebellious all the same. Pinstripes and suiting details added professionalism to Wang’s signature cutout pieces and cropped silhouettes. Re-imagined basics in crushed velvet and chenille lent a certain softness to an otherwise angular collection, which was limited to a palette of black, grey, camel, and the occasional burst of cranberry or rusted jewel tones. Sleek, combed-over hair and last night’s eye makeup solidified the no-fuss attitude we’ve come to expect since Wang emerged on the fashion scene. New York Fashion Week F/W 2010: Christian Siriano

imageI like to give Christian Siriano, fourth season winner of Project Runway, major props for extending his fifteen minutes of fame to an actual career in fashion! After a long wait outside the tents, I was treated to a luxurious collection by the pint-sized designer. New Yorkers and other fans of black will rejoice, as over half the collection was all black from crocodile textured leather jackets to slim fit trousers. The entire collection were devoid of prints and patterns save for one blue leopard print suit. With the lack of prints, Siriano played with textures such as a beautiful metallic brocade dress with fluttering chiffon sleeves. The collection was inspired by European women of the 1960s and these women are hardly wilting wallflowers. The high sheen of the silk charmeuse and satin along with rhinestone-encrusted sunglasses by Kerin Rose provided for a strikingly ladylike collection. New York Fashion Week F/W 2010: Michael Angel

imageMichael Angel has made a name for himself with his experimental use of fabrics and abstract digital prints. His Fall 2010 show at Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week did not disappoint! Models paraded down the runway in ultra-feminine looks with peplum jackets, skin tight dresses and long knotted belts on top of long coats. There was a mix of fabrics and textures such as neoprene-like jackets, short hair fur coats and skirts, elbow length leather gloves, and a unique laminated lace which created a peekaboo effect. My favorite looks were the skin tight dresses with laser cut applique patterns applied on top with a contrasting color. Beauty looks to experiment with are swept updos (ala Tippi Hedren in Hitchcock’s “The Birds”) with untamed flyaway hair. (That means we can put away the gel and hairspray!) Soft smokey eyes and nude lips completed the look.

New York Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2010: Sachin + Babi

imageUpon first glance at the Sachin + Babi Fall/Winter 2010 collection, it became instantly clear that the husband and wife designer duo were ready to really brighten up the rather gloomy Fashion Week kick-off. Their latest line, which has taken traditional fall staples like slacks, sweaters, and wrap dresses and given them some serious pizzazz, lacks nothing in the realm of hue and sparkle. With a use of color that’s been amped up to the max and bold details like sequin pinstripes, feathered layers, fur, and jeweled bowties, the collection is distinctly feminine but with an in-your-face edge and a brightness that still manages to look fall-appropriate. Take a look at the slideshow for some highlights, then click over to the designers’ site for an exclusive video!

Color Palette: powder blue, black, charcoal, silver, gold, saturated fuchsia, emerald, banana yellow

Casual Fridays: Take A Cue From Elle’s “Models Off Duty” Feature!

imageIt’s no wonder that many models are lauded for their effortless, city-chic style, especially when their jobs entail personifying designers’ often limitless ideas. Of course, it helps that they spend their days in the company of fashion’s most innovative figures, and as long as we’re being honest, have figures that allows them to pull off nearly anything. Take a look at Elle’s “Models Off Duty” feature and you’ll notice that many of the subjects are sporting some twist on modern classics like structured coats, leather boots, basic tees, and trendy denim. See the slideshow for a few of our favorite looks, and click over to Elle to see more from the stylish streets of NYC!

New York Fashion Week F/W 2010: Richard Chai

imageWhile vibrant colors and saturated shades are having their moment, Richard Chai brought it back to industrial chic for Fall/ Winter 2010. Think edgy grunge meets uptown chic with contrasting layers and varying fabrics swathed in a nonchalantly stylish way. A color palette of soft and deep greys and blacks were subtly interjected with muted olive greens and dusky dark blues while sheer, fluid ruffles and drapes were layered over unique basics. Styles featured anything from wool jackets and blazers to flowing dresses and tops, all over sized. Monochromatic layered basics that may well have been stolen from the boyfriend’s closet were worn in a conservative manner, and fitted corset designs were paired with looser fitting, sleeved garments. A juxtaposition of styles, with knit arm warmers complimenting thick, luxe cropped furs all done in grey and dark tones, summed up this relaxed but structured hobo-chic collection. NYFW Must-Have: High-Fashion Outerwear!

imageThe New York weather may be frightful (understatement?), but you know what they say — the fashion show must go on! Fashion Week invitees who truly live and breathe fashion are trudging their skinny behinds to the shows despite whatever the sleet and snow are hurling in their direction. So the biggest must-have on every attendee’s checklist (aside from invites to the most sought-after shows) is definitely some cold-weather outerwear. But when you’re rubbing elbows with the likes of Anna Wintour and other high-profile front-row voyeurs, you can’t just show up in any coat. In fact, you’d probably be safer going naked than being seen wrapped up in Uggs and a Snuggie, for example. Stand out in trendy leopard print with a Chloe wool-blend coat, or show off your feminine side with a ruffled trench by Oscar de la Renta. Extravagance is key, so unfortunately you’ll have to leave your “frugalista” tendencies behind if you want to make the best impression — or be really good at faking it! New York Fashion Week F/W 2010: BCBGMAXAZRIA

imageDespite the blow of the devastating McQueen news this morning, the fall fashion week kick-off continued with the BCBGMAXAZRIA Fall/Winter 2010 collection. With a notably muted color palette save for the occasional pops of saffron, blue, and silver, the show boasted a series of looks that were cozy-chic yet streamlined. Voluminous open cardigans and dresses were given shape with leather belts while floaty skirts and cashmere tops were updated with pleats and sequins. The luxurious yet lightweight fabrics allowed for structured draping without adding too much bulk or limiting subtle movement, giving the appearance that the garments were simply gliding down the runway. But despite the overall more relaxed styles, evening looks weren’t forgotten — a crowd favorite was a subtly sparkly sequined halter dress that was winterized with white tights and ankle-strap boots. Check out some fresh-off-the-runway photos in the slideshow!
