On My Windowsill

… lies a lot of dust, especially in-between the rail tracks for the window. I do my best to keep the dust and debris away, however the combination of vacuuming the track and brushing out the debris doesn’t help. I also require a low maintenance herb to grow on my windowsill, and this is how I will tackle both these aspects.

Cleaner Robot by Chae Young Sam & Jeong Ming Yeong is this beautifully designed vacuum with brush that dedicatedly cleans up the rail tracks of the sliding windows. The robotic device even features a built-in UV lamp for sterilization and recharges using solar power.

Plan’t – Solar Energy Garden by Min Soon Kim is a hydroponic cultivating machine that can be used in apartments to grow vegetables right on your window. The device harnesses solar energy and then uses it to power a mild LED mood lamp for the night and also for the times when the sun doesn’t shine so much for the plant.

Coco Café

A bold new beverage mixes coconut water and coffee to brilliant ends
CocoCafe1.jpg

Here at the CH HQ, we have a bit of an obsession with coconut water and coffee. While it never occurred to us to combine our two favorite beverages, a new drink called Coco Café out of California has found synergy among this unconventional pairing. The hydration and health benefits of the coconut water balance out the natural metabolic boost from the espresso coffee, making this a great restorative option for the demands of daily life.

The flavor experience of Coco Café is what you might expect from an iced latte. The low-fat milk doesn’t drown out the bold espresso taste, and the coconut adds a slight nuttiness to the finish. Coconut water is chock-full of benefits for long and short-term health—high levels of electrolytes and potassium keep your body balanced, and the antioxidants stave off free radicals over time. As for the espresso, the organic fair trade beans have enough punch to get you through even the most taxing routines.

CocoCafe2.jpg

The concept for Coco Café was born when surfer and yoga practitioner Elan Eifer needed something to get him through early morning yoga classes. Eifer found the natural goodness of coconut water a perfect complement to espresso’s energizing effects. His erstwhile roommate and restauranteur Brian McCaslin had faith in the concoction and the two set out to create the world’s first coconut water cafe latte.

Coco Café is available for purchase online and at select Whole Foods locations.

Aeroshot Pure Energy

Calorie-free caffeine inhalers with more kick than a strong cup of Joe

AEROSHOT-lifestyle.jpg

In an age when medical marvels such as inhalable vaccines are becoming more widely available, it’s only logical that this convenient medium converges with the global energy drink boom. While increasingly smaller forms span shot-like bottles (R.I.P.
Nos
) to
dissolving strips
, Aeroshot’s inhalable caffeine has some notable advantages.

This new paradigm packs B vitamins and 100 milligrams of caffeine, equivalent to that in a large cup of strong Joe, but without craft-level preparations, the calories of Starbucks or coffee breath. Designed to be temperature resistant as well as TSA-friendly for use on commercial flights, though we haven’t tasted it yet, the website claims it’s both fast and safe.

The brainchild of Harvard professor David Edwards whose culinary innovations include inhalable chocolate and many others, this latest commercial effort has some interesting applications for looping back into the medical community. Both less messy and easier to use than today’s nasal inhalable devices, Aeroshot could have some far-reaching potential for delivering vitamins, medicine, anti-viral shots and vaccines at more affordable price points.

Hitting stores in Boston and New York in about three months from now, a free sample is available for the first 500 people who apply for a promotional code.

NuGo Bars

New sweet-and-salty flavors from the better-tasting nutrition bar brand
NugoBars-3.jpg

When you’re out and about, pumping iron or just running a busy schedule, it’s nice to have a nutrition boost handy. Next time you’re in a spot, give NuGo’s above-average bars a try. Their use of pure natural ingredients comes through in their taste, giving them an obvious edge over the competition. Dig a little deeper and you’ll find that the brand’s commitment to quality is even stronger. For their chocolate-covered bars, they go so far as to make their own chocolate in-house.

The latest additions to the Dark collection, peanut butter cup and chocolate pretzel flavors, introduce a sweet-savory mix to the line. These delicious new options, like all Nugo bars, can be enjoyed guilt-free. Each contains 10 grams of protein and contains all-natural dairy-free ingredients. On top of that, the bars are also low fat, vegan, and certified kosher.

For those looking for a gluten-free snack, NuGo bars have a rice-based version too, selling for $19 per box (includes 12 bars) on their website. They have low-fat and high protein organic and vegan bars as well to suit a variety of dietary needs.

EcoTensil

Eco-friendly tasting spoons save the planet one fro-yo bite at a time

ecotensil-1.jpg ecotensil-2.jpg

Ever wondered what happens to tasting spoons after you’ve sampled the latest fro-yo flavor? Peggy Cross did and found the little plastic utensils usually end up sitting in landfills for centuries. Drawing on her experience as a marketing director, the mother of two boys applied her knowledge of efficient packaging and distribution to spoon design. The result is EcoTensil, a biodegradable scoop made from flat shiny paperboard. Fold the two dots together and presto—instant taste-tester!

ecotensil-3.jpg

Spoons biodegrade in two-five weeks (compare to six months or longer for other biodegradable tasters) and the charmingly simple design packages more efficiently and ships flat, saving on transportation energy costs. EcoTensils come in a tiny version, the EcoTaster, and a full-size version, the EcoSpoon. There’s even an EcoSecurity model designed for prisons and psych wards, an alternative that eliminates the danger of sharpened utensils and is more humane than fingers-only eating.

A starter kit of 1,000 EcoTasters runs $36, with prices increasing from there. They sell online from EcoTensil.

What is American Power?

A photographer’s eye-opening look at U.S. energy production and consumption
America-1.jpg

In 2003 renowned photographer Mitch Epstein unintentionally began a documentary series on the production and consumption of energy in America. Now called “What is American Power?,” the Prix Pictet-winning project started while on assignment when Epstein learned that American Electric Power Company bought out the citizens of Cheshire, OH to avoid future lawsuits over constant environmental containment. Deeply moved by the willingness of the industry to systematically erase an entire town, Epstein set out to further document the full impact the utility companies have on people and places, seeking to “heighten our awareness of the toll that energy production and consumption take on our economy, security, health and natural resources”.

America-5.jpg

Epstein describes what he found during the six-year endeavor as playing with a Russian nesting doll, “when I opened electrical power, I discovered political power; when I opened political power, I discovered corporate power; within corporate was consumer; within consumer was civic; within civic was religious, and so on, one type of power enabling the next.”

America-2.jpg

The upshot, an amazing book and interactive website, feature Epstein’s stunning photographs from “the land of the free.” Adding emotional effect, the project also includes enlightening answers to the imposing question by everyone from school kids to artists, in both the U.S. and abroad.

America-4.jpg

The selected quotes lend extra insight into the connection between humans and consumption. Chicago-based photographer and writer Dawoud Bey claims, “American power is a paradoxical thing that has the potential for so much good but that is too often misused and indeed abused.” He feels if the country used its collective knowledge to benefit the global public, the world would be a much better place.

America-3.jpg

Sixth grader Lucia Bell-Epstein astutely says, “American power is a disgusting use of fossil fuels that is destroying the environment and our health. Sooner or later American power will destroy itself; unless we all come together to save what’s left of America.”

The second edition of the book “American Power” is also available for pre-order from
