Baselworld 2014: Flight: From feathers to the cosmos, three watches inspired by the sky

Baselworld 2014: Flight

Artists have been inspired by the sky since the dawn of time; from the clouds and birds soaring, to human ascent and even the outer reaches of what we know—and can further imagine. Gravity-defying limitlessness propels the imagination, and it’s no different within the watch world. The following three pieces…

Faye Toogood “gets fat” with fourth Assemblage furniture collection

Milan 2014: the fourth iteration of British designer Faye Toogood‘s Assemblage collection will launch at the Project B Gallery in Milan on Tuesday.

Faye Toogood has continued to use the geometric elements typical of her Assemblage range for this collection. But in contrast to the angular feel of Assemblage 3, the feet on these pieces are rounded, drawing influence from her experiences of pregnancy and motherhood.

“I’ve got fat,” Toogood told Dezeen. “Gone are the angles, hard lines and dark colour schemes of previous collections in favour of voluptuousness and creaminess.”

Assemblage 4, titled Roly-Poly, includes a low four-legged chair, a higher dining chair and table, a sculptural daybed, and a reinterpretation of Toogood’s Element table.

Each piece is developed from a clay maquette and then crafted from fibreglass, more commonly used in boat production.

Soft tones of cream, beige and white are reminiscent of faded injection-moulded Eames chairs.

Accompanying the furniture, the hand-woven Play tapestry and yarn throws designed for the chair and day bed explore the collection’s geometric themes in a different material.

“My new collection reflects my journey of becoming a mother and seeing the world through the eyes of a child,” said Toogood.

Toogood will show the furniture at Project B Gallery, Via Maroncelli 7, in Milan from 8 to 13 April.

Scout designed by Big-Game

Designed for everyday use, Scout features flat surfaces and geometric lines with a bold, easy-to-read face and contrasting numerals and markers.

“We researched heavily on military and functional timepieces throughout history,” Big-Game told Dezeen Watch Store. “Their use of high contrast dials, readable typefaces and simple case designs made them look functional and elegant at the same time.”

“We wanted to come up with our own updated version and call it Scout – a simple, robust, affordable timepiece – a tool for everyday life,” added the designer.

The watch, which features a durable nylon strap, also draws from surprising nostalgic inspiration. “In a more unexpected way we were always big fans of the Flik Flak kids watches that also have an aluminium case and a Nylon strap,” explained the designer.

Hewlett-Packard Once Again!

It is so refreshing to find designers indulge in fantasy games that go beyond Apple and Microsoft. Not that we can do without another iPhone 6 (or was it 7) concept, it’s just the question of visualizing other another brand from the intellectual realm. Apparently Raymond RJ Wong, Lead Industrial Designer at Hewlett-Packard, asked a bunch of designers to come up with what they think about social communication, and this is what we got.

HP Link is a communication tool of tomorrow, which captures and releases an authentic communication. It augments the sensory possibilities of existing communication devices by directional or surround sound recording; touch pen, natural sound immersion with acoustic paper technology and intuitive inkjet printing.

A daily life tool that adapt to each one habits, thanks to its multiple communication possibilities.

Designers: Romain Guillame & Léo Marzolf

Coquille Sofa by Markus Johansson resembles the curved form of a shell

Milan 2014: this sofa by Swedish designer Markus Johansson echoes the curves and ripples of a shell and will launch at this year’s Salone Satellite in Milan (+ slideshow).

Markus Johansson named the Coquille Sofa after the French word for “shell”, which is often associated with a scallop shape.

“I toyed with inspiration found among mussels and shells, and I’ve been working with different levels of softness and hardness to render Coquille as comfortable as possible,” he explained.

The designer attached curved pieces of polyether foam to the wooden frame to make the ribs around the base and back.

Layers of soft padding were added on top, creating gently rippled contours like the exterior of a shell.

The sofa is upholstered in a light grey fabric and patterned by the shadows that fall across the surface of the undulating form.

It will be displayed at Salone Satellite, part of the Salone Internazionale del Mobile taking place next week from 8 to 13 April.

Iceland's HiddenWorld Textiles
