Here is news that will warm some hearts and give relief from the bitter cold sweeping across the United States of America; WDR announced the World Design Rankings in Arts, Architecture and Design. United States takes the first place among 69 represented countries in 2013 with 112 Design Awards won globally. I have recapped some samples of the kind of amazing works that have won at the A’ Design Awards & Competition; of course the rank order is in there as well.

WDR World Design Rankings announced the updated design rankings of countries based on the number of design awards won at international juried design competitions and awards. United States ranked as number 1 among the 69 represented countries, followed by Italy, England, Japan, Brazil, China, Germany, Korea, Hong Kong and Turkey, which took the top positions in 2013.

The main objective of the world design rankings is to contribute to global design culture through advocating and highlighting good design.

Debuting new countries that were added to the list include Puerto Rico and Iceland, a new section called “Design Business Insights” has been introduced. The is a new way to get quick answers, the “Design Classification Platform” ranks designers, artists and architects in hundreds of creative fields and design categories. Using this platform you can get instant answers to questions like “What is the best advertising design agency in the world?”, “Who is the worlds’ leading architect?”, “Who is the best Graphics designer in Japan” etc.

The Designer Rankings provides an overall score and ranking of all designers based on the number of design awards won globally, in more than hundred creative disciplines including product design, graphic design, architecture, interior design, fashion design and service design.

Architect and writer Terri Peters comments in her introduction: “At 3XN, architecture is everywhere, it is always the starting point and the answer to complex client briefs. The studio is concerned with all of the things around a building, how people use spaces, movement through the building and views inwards and outwards. It becomes clear in visiting a 3XN project that the office takes care to design buildings for people, for users, for passersby, for visitors, for locals and for future generations.”

FLAXX chairs competition

Competition: Dezeen has teamed up with Intier Automotive Eybl to give readers the chance to win one of three chairs moulded from flax.

All four legs are connected at the front of the chair, so the seat and backrest are cantilevered. This form allows the chairs to neatly stack on top of each other.

Available in a range of colours, the pictured model with a sand seat and white frame will be received by winners of this competition. For more information about the design visit the FLAXX website or check out the company on Facebook.

FLAXX chairs competition

Here’s some more information from Intier Automotive Eybl:

The FLAXX Chair is a hybrid design which offers the comfort of a free-swinging chair as well as the functionality of a conventional four-legged chair. The novel structure of the support frame and the combination of advantages from both designs is a contemporary interpretation in both form and function. The seat shell is made from natural fibre mats, which are moulded into a stable three-dimensional form by pressing multiple layers of the material. The mats predominantly consist of flax, an annually renewable raw material, and are held together by textile polypropylene as an adhesive.

The seat shell and frame are made of 100 percent recyclable materials. The FLAXX chair is part of permanent collection of the Design Museum Holon/Tel Aviv and the Austrian Museum of Applied Arts/Contemporary Art – MAK in Vienna.
