Nendo extends Peg furniture collection for Cappellini

Milan 2014: Japanese design studio Nendo has unveiled several new pieces to accompany the Peg armchair it produced last year for Italian brand Cappellini (+ slideshow).

Also called Peg, Nendo‘s collection includes another chair, a series of beds, a chaise longue, a small and large table, a mirror, a corner cupboard and two sofas.

“Peg is a family of products that tells a history, comfort but also attention to detail, quality of materials and good shapes,” said Cappellini in a statement.

The shape of the round armchair was influenced by the small cars that populate the streets of Milan. Its seat rests on a crossed ash frame, with the back legs poking up through the sides of the backrest to provide support.

The top and legs of the tables are both rounded – a distinctive element repeated throughout the collection. The tops of the legs puncture the tabletop so they are visible when viewed from above.

Echoing a design feature from the table, the longest tripod supporting the mirror is visible through a hole at the head of the oval glass.

The chaise longue and sofas come with removable cushions available in a range of colours and fabrics.

The beds in the collection have wood headboards that can be upholstered in fabric or leather. The corner cupboard is made with three poles that support four triangular moulded shelves.

Milan 2012: a single piece of fabric folds around the moulded polyurethane foam seat of this club chair by London designer Benjamin Hubert.

The cover is attached to the chair with Velcro so the upholstery is completely free of stitching.

Dressing the sculptural form with the loose upholstery allows the creases to become a feature of the overall aesthetic.

The fabric can easily be removed and swapped for different alternatives.

Garment is a lounge club chair with a unique approach to the application and construction of textile in the furniture industry. The chair is a study into how to ‘dress’ a piece of furniture defying the conventional rules and construction of typical upholstery.

Garment by Benjamin Hubert for Cappellini

A single piece of textile is loosely folded around a distinctive geometric polyurethane form. This construction and loose cover allows for creases to become part of the character of the chair reminiscent of a piece of fashion and increases the sensation of visual softness.

The chair’s construction is ‘stitch less’ as it comprised of a single sheet of textile fixed onto the form with Velcro. The chair is detailed with inverted box pleats reinforcing this relationship with clothing. The cover can also be easily removed and interchanged based on the season or fashion.

Garment is the first collaboration between Cappellini and Benjamin Hubert launched at Salone Del Mobile in April 2012.

CAPO Armchair & Ottoman

The first collaboration between Doshi Levien and Cappellini gave rise to Capo, an armchair with a slender yet enveloping form.

Capo by Doshi Levien

Its shape and materiality came from the image of a dapper gentleman in a well-cut suit and a felted hat.

As the name suggests, Capo with its wide cantilevered arms and upturned lapel, transforms the sitter into a boss.

The thin flexible edges of the chair provide shelter without being closed and also emphasise its lightness.

Capo is available in several variations that make it suitable for various settings.

Tron chair by Dror

Tron chair by Dror

New York designer Dror Benshetrit has created this armchair for Walt Disney Signature and Italian design brand Cappellini, inspired by the forthcoming movie Tron: Legacy.

The piece is made of rotation-moulded plastic and is shaped to mimic the landscape of the film’s setting in a digital world.

One-off prototypes hand-painted by Dror (above and below) are on show at Design Miami this week.

THE TRON CHAIR: SIT OFF THE GRID

CAPPELLINI AND WALT DISNEY SIGNATURE LAUNCH DROR BENSHETRIT’S LATEST DESIGN INSPIRED BY THE NEW DISNEY MOVIE TRON: LEGACY

‘Tron’ chair by Dror Benshetrit 2010

In Cappellini’s and Walt Disney Signature’s latest collaboration, the captivatingly imaginative world of Disney’s film TRON: Legacy has inspired designer Dror Benshetrit to create a uniquely original range of sculptural armchairs.

Paying homage to the Outlands terrain in TRON: Legacy, the chairs reflect a bleak and rugged panorama beyond the sleek and ordered lines of “The Grid”, which forms the central setting for the digital world of TRON. Raw data forms a jagged and angular landscape, serving as a muse for an armchair that is comprised of intersecting layers and textures of “digital” rock. Constructed out of 100% recycled roto-moulded plastic, with varying textural surfaces, the TRON Armchair invites you to “sit off the grid”.

To turn Dror’s design into a finished product, Cappellini has extensively developed the manufacture techniques involved to form the many irregular facets of the chair with a seamless finish, creating an imposing and monolithic shape. Entirely made of recycled plastic (linear polyethylene), the finished product provides excellent resistance to weathering. The rotational technique allows for large-scale production and the implementation of different textures and colours on the chair’s surface.

An aluminium mould is rotated in variable directions around both a primary and secondary axis. With two movements of rotation, the plastic materials are evenly distributed into a smooth and extremely durable shell structure.

“This collaboration is the premise for a joint Cappellini and Walt Disney Signature stylistic commitment that promises to become a new, interesting and exciting chapter in the history of contemporary design, combining Cappellini’s strong inclination for innovation with the magical creativity of Disney.” Giulio Cappellini, Art Director for Cappellini.

“Walt Disney and Cappellini both have a shared approach to design, creativity and collaboration that turns everyday products into functional works of art. Collaborating with a leading Italian design brand specialising in contemporary furnishings like Cappellini is another exciting step in continuing Walt Disney Signature’s philosophy on design and innovation.” Pamela Lifford, Executive Vice President, Fashion and Home, The Walt Disney Company.

The armchair will be manufactured for retail sale in a range of possible colourways, available from Spring 2011.
