The Polar Express Turns 25

polar express cover.jpgIt’s been quite the year for iconic children’s books. Eric Carle‘s The Very Hungry Caterpillar recently munched its way to age 40, and now The Polar Express is celebrating 25 years of enchanting readers with its mildly creepy brand of Christmas whimsy. Written and illustrated by Chris Van Allsburg, the Caldecott Medal-winning book has sold seven million copies worldwide and spawned a 2004 animated film version starring the voice of Tom Hanks. In celebration of The Polar Express chugging to the quarter century mark, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt has released a shiny new hardcover edition that includes a slightly spooky letter from the author, a companion CD with narration by actor Liam Neeson (good choice), and a silvery ornament that features Van Allsburg’s first full-length illustration of the story’s conductor. The fun extends to the virtual world with a Polar Express-themed online advent calendar (launching December 1) and assorted holiday downloadables aimed at young readers. Hungry for a sneak preview? • Cozy Up In Tweed Clothing And Accessories That Aren’t So Traditional

imageThere’s something about tweed that undeniably conjures up images of wintertime coziness… not to mention old-fashioned office attire and your grandma’s go-to outfit for Sunday brunch. The good news is, however, that tweed has been updated to suit the styles of modern trends — from platform pumps to boyfriend blazers — and has expanded beyond its traditional use in plain ol’ pea coats and conservative skirt suits. The great thing about the fabric is its ability to makes items still look office-appropriate without appearing stuffy, yet it can also be dressed up with metallic details for a night out, or thrown on last minute for an upgrade of your usual “just rolled outta bed” look. For some wintry-warm tweed pieces that are still totally on-trend, check out the slideshow!

    Galaxy Reclining Armchair

    GALAXY2_S.jpg

Spotted at this year’s Habitat Valencia, the Galaxy Reclining Armchair by Spanish manufacturer CasaDesús blends space age style with suburban functionality.

The sleek chair, designed by company founder Jaime Casadesús, puts to shame every La-Z-Boy in existence with minimal lines, luxurious upholstery options and automated articulations.

Just now making inroads into the American market—currently available through Moura Starr—CasaDesús produces an opulent range of furnishings quite similar in style to Italian brands Molteni & C or Poltrona Frau, but with a Spanish flair.

Expect to see more from this brand in the coming years.

Guerrilla Advertising 2: Call for entries

Following on from Guerrilla Advertising: Unconventional Brand Communication (published by Laurence King, 2006), CR’s Gavin Lucas is currently collecting work to potentially feature in a second volume that will showcase more non-traditional advertising and marketing campaigns from recent years…

Artist and modelmaker Wilfrid Wood created giant characters for an Australian ad campaign for Frosty Fruits ice lollies. Agency: Publicis Mojo, Melbourne

In just the last few years, advertising, like every other creative industry, has had to evolve fast in order to survive and communicate efficiently in the new and ever changing media landscape. Old ways of thinking about the traditional advertising mediums of TV, press and poster have had to be replaced with an ability to offer clients project-specific solutions to their advertising needs that utilise whichever media channels are most relevant to the message and its intended target audience.

Guerrilla Advertising 2 will showcase some of the best international examples of the varied and inventive tactics that are being used today by big-name brands, non-profit organizations and individuals to promote themselves, their ideas and their products.

This park bench is actually the medium for a campaign by Ogilvy London to promote Cancer Research UK

Have you created a brilliant and inventive ad campaign in the last two or three years that should be considered for inclusion in GA2? If so, please download the Call For Entries PDF document to find out how to get involved. Deadline for submissions: 26 February 2010

Only slightly tangentially, publisher Laurence King has just informed our Gav that a bundle of the long-sold out special edition of his Badge Button Pin book have just been found in the corner of a distribution warehouse. LK have vowed to send out a copy of this much sought after (OK, so we’re slightly biased) tome (which comes in a blister pack that includes 10 specially commissioned badges by the likes of Kim Jones, Fred Deakin, Trevor Jackson, Antony + Alison, Mark Pawson, Femke Heimstra, Michael C Place and Alexander Gelman) to a randomly selected member of its Facebook group – every time a multiple of 100 is reached in terms of registered fans. Car design: Split windows and rearview cameras

    0swc05.jpg

The 1963 Split-Window Coupe is one of the more rare Corvettes you’ll have trouble finding and has a design feature that didn’t last, primarily because it neatly blocked the sightline of the rearview mirror. In a sense the design was ahead of its time, meaning if it could be combined with today’s rearview cameras, rather than mirrors, then the split window wouldn’t be a problem.

GM’s latest back-to-the-future Corvette concept is toying with bringing back the split window. In the following World of Car Fans video, it’s nice to see GM design veep Ed Welburn introducing the car, as the man is clearly in love with the design:

Incidentally, for a look at a cool usage of rearview cameras, check out Popular Mechanics’ description of the three they rigged up (two replacing the side mirrors) for their “Eco-Muscle” project, where they attempt to turn a beastly Dodge Challenger into a green machine while maintaining the muscle.

    0swc06.jpg

Each little camera is only 1-in. in diameter, but delivers a 120-degree wide angle image. We mounted one in the center of the rear spoiler pointing straight back and one at the leading edge of each side window, angled to give a clear view of traffic. The three cameras all feed to a 7-in. rectangular screen that shows the scene from all three simultaneously….

Fellina Sok-Cham’s killer bamboo serving tray with inset bamboo saucers and little Modernist spoons that nest in the cups is a great way to serve espresso, tea, or desserts. The dishwasher-safe set is also a surprisingly affordable 45 bucks at the MoMA store (or $36 for those of you who’ve shelled out to be members).
