Slowwood handmade in Fryslân

Slowwood_yellow

It's always a pleasure seeing a new project over at Studio Aandacht … you know the design studio from the Netherlands who also helped design Bloesem's new logo 🙂 … lately Ben and his wife Tatjana have collaboratedwith (styling and photography) Christien Starkenburg and her amazing collection side-tables called the MUN collection

Slowwood_red

The tables are made by local craftsmen in Fryslan, a northern province from the Netherlands,  using solid wood, 100% natural finishes and mineral paint. And I have fallen in LOVE deeply… I wish I could afford buying the whole collection and use them everywhere in the house. The livingroom, kitchen, outside, kids playroom and my bedroom….yes they are multifunctional and fit in any decoration style!

Buy the Monitor and Have Art Streamed Directly Onto Your Walls

Back in March, we told you about Artsicle, essentially “Neflix for art,” wherein subscribers in the New York area would pay $50 per month, per piece, to have something interesting to hang on their walls, made by an up-and-coming artist. Now another instant-art-for-hire service has popped up: Framed. For a fee, you’ll receive a 40″ television that hooks up to your wi-fi. Visit their site and purchase a piece of motion-based art or conceivably, like Artsicle, sign up for a rotating subscription service. Created by interface designer Yugo Nakamura, in collaboration with interior designer Yoshihiro Saitoh and the design and engineering firm, Om. Inc., Framed is described simply as “a new platform for digital art, designed for everyday interior spaces.” We don’t particularly see it as being the most inviting thing to have in one’s home, given that the constant motion seems like it would serve as a major distraction (and what about screen burn out and power consumption?), but we’re certainly sure there’s a market out there for people who aren’t us. And, of course, if priced right, it seems like it might be a viable service for certain types of businesses (i.e. probably not appearing in your dentist’s office anytime soon). Here’s their explanatory launch video:

University of Iowa Thinking Big for Rebuilding Efforts, Plans for Mecca of Modernism

0627iowawaterarch.jpg

Never mind that they’re still struggling through the now years-old battle with the Federal Emergency Management Agency over where, how, and if they’re able to build or rebuild a new Museum of Art structure, and don’t get too bogged down by the news of rapidly rising cost estimates, because the University of Iowa is moving full steam ahead in their attempt to massively reconfigure and renovate their campus following the disastrous floods of 2008 that damaged many of its buildings. One structure in particular, the Hancher Auditorium, is the subject of a recent report filed by the university, wherein they describe to FEMA what they’d like done with Hancher’s replacement. Seemingly seeing this as an opportunity to bring something more modern to the campus, the school has sited buildings like Daniel Libeskind‘s pointy Denver Art Museum and Santiago Calatrava‘s swoopy Atlanta Symphony Center (yes, “pointy” and “swoopy” are technical terms used throughout the industry). As we personally had previously attended many performances in the pre-flood, old Hancher, and definitely appreciated Max Abramovitz‘s classically modern 1972 building, we’re excited by the prospects of something a little more up to date. And they certainly have the right talent for it, considering they’ve commissioned Pelli Clarke Pelli for the job. Here are a few more of their reference points:

UI officials have visited several facilities for research and guidance on the Hancher project, including the Overture Center for the Arts in downtown Madison, Wis.; several large and small facilities in Minneapolis, including the Guthrie Theater, the Walker Center and the Ford Center; the Orange County Performing Arts Center in Mesa, Calif.; and the Disney Performing Arts Center in Los Angeles designed by Frank Gehry, who designed UI’s Iowa Advanced Technology Laboratories.
