Yellow Circuit

Veuve Cliquot paints Milan yellow with an origami bucket, a mobile shop and more

During Milan’s recent Design Week, it was hard not to miss Veuve Clicquot’s presence in the city. Dubbing their project the Yellow Circuit, the revered champagne producers splashed their signature color in showrooms, exhibits and even on a trolley. Strategic partnerships included 20 hotels, lounges and bars around Milan, as well as design spaces like Comprex, Edra, Kartell, MDF Italia and Moroso.

Ubiquitous at all the venues was Clicq’d Up, a foldable champagne bucket designed by young Belgian designer Mathias van de Walle that was also the subject of most of the media buzz. Debuting as part of the design festivities, van de Walle based his innovative object on the idea of creating an origami structure full of ice—a combination of form, function and fun. The reusable bucket packs flat, making it easily transported, set up and stored.

A constant mobile presence as it made its rounds through the city, Clicquot On The Move turned a classic Milanese trolley into a roaming boutique, designed in partnership with ATM, the city’s public transport company. With stops in the center area between Piazza Castello and Piazza Fontana, passengers had the chance to enjoy sights alongside a Veuve Clicquot personal shopper.

Chris Hacker is the chief design officer for Johnson & Johnson, leading all creative direction for brand identity, packaging design and brand imagery for the company’s consumer division. Prior to joining J&J, he was the Senior Vice President of Global Marketing and Design for Aveda. Under his leadership, Aveda received the 2004 National Design Award for Corporate Achievement from the Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum.

The Designers Accord is a global coalition of designers, educators, and business leaders working together to create positive environmental and social impact. Adopters of the Designers Accord commit to five guidelines that provide collective and individual ways to integrate sustainability into design. The Designers Accord provides a participatory platform with online and offline manifestations so that members have access to a community of peers who share methodologies, resources, and experiences around environmental and social issues in design.

Eastern Eggs for Japan

Ad agency TBWA London has joined forces with a number of illustrators to create the Eastern Eggs project: a series of rather beautiful wooden eggs that can be purchased online, with all proceeds going to the Red Cross Japan Tsunami Appeal.

Designs from illustrators such as Damien Weighill, Jan Kallwejt and Nick Purser are included in the project – the full range of eggs available is shown below. Each egg is approximately 6cm high, made from solid wood and costs £10.

The eggs are all printed using an Egg-bot, an open-source art robot that can draw on spherical or egg-shaped objects. You can see it in action in the film below. Once you’ve chosen a design from the site and payment is confirmed, Eastern Eggs will email you to let you know when it will be printed (it may even be possible to see the Egg-bot produce your egg via a webcam).

The Eastern Egg project is the brainchild of Sermad Buni, creative technologist at TBWA London. All production costs are being covered by the agency, so all monies raised from the sale of the eggs will go to the Japan Tsunami Appeal. More info on Eastern Eggs is here.

The "21st Century Beetle" Debuts

There’s a scene in the excellent Danish crime series Forbrydelsen in which Sarah Lund, the beleaguered homicide detective, is forced to take her elderly mother’s car. It’s a ’50s-era VW Bug. From a production-design standpoint, the choice of the car is meant to show how far the discredited protagonist has fallen from her department-issued Saab, but I was stunned at how good the VW looked, even driving through Copenhagen where it seems no car is older than five years.

I’m not the only one who’s noticed the old model still looks good, of course. On Monday, Volkswagen pulled the wraps off of their updated “21st Century Beetle,” and as PSFK’s Dave Pinter reports, the designers went back into the car’s heritage by parking a 1950s Bug in the studio for inspiration.

The new model reflects this, dialing back the bubble-like cutesiness of the Beetle we’ve been seeing for the past decade and hewing back to the flatter shape of the ’50s version.

The interior has been updated—well, retro-updated—as well:

The 2012 Beetle gets a heritage derived passenger compartment that is more harmonious with the exterior. With the new windshield angled back further, the dashboard doesn’t extend far forward like the second generation. This immediately makes the interior look more familiar and less like a spaceship. Wrapping the doors and dash are color matched panels relating to the exterior. This again has a 50s inspired look especially with the silver trim.

New Museum Readies Rem Koolhaas Exhibition

Say it with us now: “Cronocaos.” This vaguely Flinstonian term is in fact a Koolhaas-ism and the subject of an exhibition by the architect and his firm, the Office of Metropolitan Architecture (OMA), that will open May 7 at the New Museum. Visitors will get an OMA’s-eye-view of architectural and urban preservation. “Through our respect for the past, heritage is becoming more and more the dominant metaphor for our lives today—a situation we call Cronocaos,” says Rem Koolhaas, who first presented the exhibition at the 2010 Venice Biennale. “We are trying to find what the future of our memory will look like. Our obsession with heritage is creating an artificial re-engineered version of our memory.” The c(h)aos part comes in the collapsing boundaries between preservation, construction, and demolition, which poses certain challenges from an exhibition design perspective. The New Museum has just the thing: a 3,600-square-foot, partially renovated, ground-floor space just down the street from its SANAA-designed HQ. The former restaurant-supply space will be visually transformed, with one side remaining “preserved” as it was while inhabited by the restaurant supply store while the the other will be minimally renovated. Displayed throughout the bifurcated space will be historic objects and photographs that trace the growth of preserved urban and natural territories along with a timeline of OMA projects that have confronted the issue of preservation. And with all this talk about memory, there will be plenty of souvenirs: each project within the OMA timeline will take the form of a postcard for visitors to peel off the wall and take home.

Daydreaming with… Returns

Following the success of the first Daydreaming with…. exhibition, staged at London’s Haunch of Venison gallery last summer, James Lavelle is returning with a new show at St Michael’s Church in Camden, London from April 27. The exhibition will feature film works by Doug Foster and Jonathan Glazer, with music from UNKLE and Simon Fisher Turner.

The second Daydreaming with… show is curated by Lavelle in association with the Gaymers Camden Crawl, and will feature video installations from Foster and Glazer. Foster’s work, The Heretics’ Gate (image shown above, and clip below), takes its inspiration from Dante’s Inferno, while Glazer is showing Red Clay, which was previously shown in the Haunch of Venison exhibition but has been reconfigured in response to the architecture at St Michael’s Church.

Kuuki’s LUMIA: art/light/motion Exhibition at State Library of Queensland

Queensland-based art, design and media studio Kuuki is currently showing Lumia: art/light/motion at the State Library of Queensland. The exhibition features a series of new media sculptures that lie squarely at the intersection of art, science and technology, a veritable menagerie of interactive critters—or, more broadly, organic forms.

Lumia addresses a broad range of biological and ecological themes, from “e. Menura supurba” (pictured at top), a robot lyrebird that learns behaviors through mimesis, to “Flower Animals” (above), which provide an abstracted real-time visualization of water temperatures in the Great Barrier Reef.
