Video Style Steal – Rihanna ‘Man Down’

imageThe Queen of transformations and re-inventions, Rihanna takes it back to her Caribbean roots with her single, ‘Man Down’.

Filmed in a mini-movie type style and with a deep subject matter, Rihanna’s shows that both her creative flow and vocal abilities have matured. With a heavy Island influence in this reggae-inspired song, it’s only natural that it would take place in the tropics.

While Rihanna has been facing quite a bit of controversy for this video, there’s no denying that her summer get-away style is perfect to pack into your carry-on!

‘America’s Presidential Historian’ Arrested After Allegedly Stealing from the Maryland Historical Society

Being as its summer reading season and that’s when you break out the guilty pleasures, we were really hoping for a good true crime heist story to break. Sure, there was that theft at Beijing’s Forbidden City a few months back and more recently, that New Jersey chef who was just caught after having swiped a Picasso, but we were holding out for something more sensational. Fortunately, the fates have provided. The Baltimore Sun was the first to report on the arrest of Barry H. Landau and his young accomplice after the pair were caught trying to steal artifacts from the Maryland Historical Society. What makes the story juicy is that Landau is a longtime and well-known collector of presidential memorabilia. On his site, he even calls himself “America’s Presidential Historian.” He’s hobnobbed with presidents and celebrities for more than 40 years, starting his collection after a visit with President Eisenhower when he was just ten years old, has made countless media appearances, and wrote the best-selling book The President’s Table: Two Hundred Years of Dining and Diplomacy. But now, as the Sun writes, he “sits in Central Booking and is being held without bail.” According to their report, Landau and the “24-year-old Jason Savedoff” spent most of Saturday at the museum looking at documents, after which museum officials eventually spotted the young accomplice “taking a document and concealing it in a portfolio, then walking out of the library.” Police were quick to act and he was apprehended, with Landau following shortly thereafter. It’s sure to be an interesting case, as we’re already riveted by just the crime. Of course it begs the question: what other skeletons are in Landau’s closet (figuratively and perhaps literally as well). Quality summer reading indeed.

THE LEVI’S® BRAND INTRODUCES INNOVATIVE MEN’S COMMUTER CYCLING PRODUCTS
The Levi’s® 511™ Commuter Skinny and Trucker Jacket for Cyclists Hits Stores This Week

SAN FRANCISCO (JULY 11, 2011) – The Levi’s® brand is proud to introduce Commuter by Levi’s® – clothing designed and optimized specifically for the needs of the urban commuter cyclist.

Arriving in select Levi’s® Stores this week, the 511™ and Trucker Commuter products integrate an array of features that address cyclists performance, convenience, safety, mobility and protection needs while maintaining the durability and classic styling that people expect from the Levi’s® brand.

The launch of these products builds upon the Levi’s® brand’s commitment to innovation while tying back to the new global ‘Go Forth’ campaign which is a rally cry to create positive change in the world.

Erik Joule, senior vice president of Levi’s® Men’s Merchandising & Design says, “This product was born from innovation, classic American style and a personal passion for cycling – it’s about designing product for people who ride bikes, by people who ride bikes.  We knew that our jeans were already being worn by urban cyclists across the country, including our own designers.  We listened to what they wanted and created a product with performance traits for biking that also functions as daily street wear.”

Built around the 511™ Skinny Jean, the Levi’s® brand’s most popular skinny fit for men, the 511™ Commuter features fabric and construction upgrades that increase mobility and durability, while protecting cyclists from the potential hazards of their daily commute.  The 511™ Commuter comes in two styles – a full length and cropped version – and both denim and non-denim fabrics.  The series also includes a Commuter version of the classic Levi’s® Trucker Jacket, an iconic work wear style that was first introduced in 1962 and has now been updated for the modern worker who demands performance and style on and off the road.

All Commuter by Levi’s® products blend form and function by utilizing the most cutting-edge performance apparel technologies.  The Levi’s® brand partnered with Swiss-based Schoeller Technologies AG to be the first to introduce NanoSphere® treatment into denim fabrication.  NanoSphere® technology makes denim fabric water resistant, dirt repellant and more durable.

The Levi’s® brand also consulted with technology-expert Clariant, a global supplier of specialty effects for textile, in order to implement the invisible but powerful technology that makes Commuter by Levi’s® clothing so unique.  All Commuter products feature Sanitized™ hygiene function, which provides protection against odors for long-lasting freshness and comfort, and 3M Scotchlite™ which subtly integrates 300,000 candle watt reflectivity into key areas of the garments.

In addition to these performance technologies, the Levi’s® brand also leveraged its own insights and superior construction techniques to make their new cycling products more commuter-friendly.  Both the Commuter by Levi’s® Trucker Jacket and the 511™ Commuter Skinny feature just the right amount of stretch to increase mobility while maintaining their signature fit.  The 511™ Commuter Skinny also features a raised back yolk that minimizes lower back gap, a reinforced crotch gusset that protects against ripping in this high stress area, double back layer pockets, a U-lock storage system and fabric reinforcements throughout.  The Trucker has extra utility pockets and modifications to the sleeves, cuffs and tail that enable more comfortable movement while cycling.

“As an avid cyclist myself, I am confident this line has all of the key cycling-specific performance features cyclists value, but haven’t been able to find in other lifestyle clothing options,” added Joule.

Commuter by Levi’s® clothing can be found at select independent bike shops in major metro cities as well as select Levi’s® Stores and at www.levi.com beginning this July. The line will also be available in select Urban Outfitters beginning in August.  The 511™ Commuter Skinny and 511™ Commuter Cropped Skinny retail for $78 and the Commuter Trucker Jacket retails for $128.To coincide with the introduction of the new Commuter by Levi’s® collection, the Levi’s® brand is partnering with Urban Outfitters  to launch the “Get in the Saddle” bike shop tour. The bike shop will go to where cyclists are and create temporary resource centers around the country complete with a bicycle tuning center, a custom commuter tailoring shop and a bicycle photo-booth. The tour kicks off in early August in New York City and ends in Portland in late September with stops in major cities along the way.

Commuter by Levi’s® 511™ Skinny product features:

  • Utility waist band – specially designed for u-lock storage
  • Higher back rise – providing additional coverage when riding
  • NanoSphere® Technology – applied to make fabric water resistant, dirt repellant and durable

  • Sanitized® built-in hygiene function – for long-lasting protection against odors
  • Reinforced Fabric – in crotch, back pockets and belt loop for durability

Typography Deconstructed

Servers Crash as Passes to September 11th Memorial & Museum Opening Week are Snatched Up

1220wtcmemorial.jpg

What’s one of the unexpectedly hottest tickets in town, but in a slightly uncomfortable sort of way? If you answered “tickets to the opening of the National September 11th Memorial & Museum,” you’d be right. The organization’s online reservation system was launched on Monday, offering visiting times spaced out by 30 minutes, starting on September 12th, when the memorial and museum is set to open to the public. The NY Post reports that within minutes, the site was swarmed with people trying to get tickets, at one point with “up to 1,000 people logged on simultaneously,” which crashed the site for a short time before the organization was able to scramble and get it back up and running. The paper continues that “More than 5,000 tickets were issued in the first hour after reservations opened at 9 a.m.” Now that the site is functional again, if you’re eager to get your passes, you can visit this page to grab them. Just don’t expect to get in right away, as at the time of this writing, nearly all the availability for that first opening week are already accounted for. And as a follow-up to a previous story from a few weeks back, it looks as though the organization has figured out how to work with collecting fees after catching so much heat when talk of $20 per pass began circulating. We have no idea how it will look at a physical entry point to the grounds, but at least on that aforementioned page, it’s clearly stated that donations are optional and in varying amounts (though you’d have to enter $0 if you don’t chose to give to the museum).

Overlapping arches divide classrooms in this temporary school in Tokyo by Japanese architects Atelier SNS.

The International School of the Sacred Heart provides a kindergarten on the ground floor and a separate junior school above.

Classrooms, cloakrooms and the staff room are accessed from a central hall on each floor and there are no corridors inside the building.

International School of the Sacred Heart Temporary Building

∞ shaped walls to symbolise children’s infinite potential that make up the building

International School of the Sacred Heart by Atelier SNS

The Kindergarten and Junior School (1st & 2nd grade) temporary building project has been built on a very limited school field. This field had to be used as part of the temporary building and school playground. We were working with limited space.

International School of the Sacred Heart by Atelier SNS

We had to build a temporary building that is compact and efficient therefore we planned a circular design. As a result, we planned a cluster from where we have a center hall with 7 branches all leading to each individual open classroom.

International School of the Sacred Heart by Atelier SNS

The walls are designed to be reusable shelves. The shelves are mounted with desks, chairs and storage. This can be transferred to the new completed building in the future.

International School of the Sacred Heart by Atelier SNS

Classrooms are divided by ∞ shaped walls to symbolise children’s infinite potential.

International School of the Sacred Heart by Atelier SNS

The entangled arches represent children all over the world holding hands. The meaning of having no walls where the arches cross is to let children know that the world is without borders.

International School of the Sacred Heart by Atelier SNS

The ∞ shaped walls are used as bookshelves. The walls are well used and the storage is made on the walls which are closed on one side.

International School of the Sacred Heart by Atelier SNS

There are no hallways and students access to classrooms from the center. Each classroom is color coordinated, so students easily find their classrooms.

The round-shaped hanging ceiling is the air conditioning system covered by wooden louvers.

The entrance to the school curves to welcome the children with open arms.

International School of the Sacred Heart by Atelier SNS

The approach to the Kindergarten and Junior school is separated by an approach ramp, upper (JS) and the lower level staircase (Kindergarten).

International School of the Sacred Heart by Atelier SNS

The Kindergarten may also be entered through the ground level.

The extended cantilever flat roof protects the building from the sunlight and rain. Just like the Japanese ‘Engawa’, the mid-term area helps with conserving energy and running cost.

International School of the Sacred Heart by Atelier SNS

Since this will be used as a temporary building I have designed many parts of the class room to be detached and reusable. The floor consists of one room which is divided by removable walls to separate each class room. The walls are also reusable because they are used as back shelves and storage.

The entangled arches looks as though you are going through a though you are going through a tunnel.
