Clerkenwell Curated: a look at Clerkenwell Design Week’s cultural highlights 21-23 May 2013

Alongside the innovations shown by the festival’s many exhibitors and showrooms, Clerkenwell Design Week (CDW) is proud to present a series of curated installations and exhibitions under the banner Clerkenwell Presents. Challenging and inspiring the design community and visitors alike, these attractions have become an integral part of the three-day event, together with the Fringe events hosted by the numerous architectural, design and creative practices that make Clerkenwell the most important creative district in the UK.

Zaha Hadid opens her Gallery to the public

For the first time since its inception, local resident Zaha Hadid Design will open the doors of their design gallery to the public for the duration of the festival. The gallery features a collection of Zaha Hadid’s furniture and design pieces on the ground floor, and a never-before-seen archive of architectural models spanning over two decades of the architect’s stellar projects on the first floor.

‘The Heart of Architecture’ with Giles Miller Studio

Giles Miller Studio will create an installation at St Johns Gate, inspired by the unique concentration of Clerkenwell’s creative community. The installation will take the form of a giant target, representing Clerkenwell as the architectural and design nucleus of London, formed of stainless steel and brass ‘pixels’, laid at opposing angles to reflect light in various degrees and depict subtle and intriguing patterns. A signature device of the studio, the elongated shape of these ‘pixels’ has been especially designed for this installation.

The Ten Tables installation with Lubna Chowdhary and Domus Tiles

The Ten Tables installation in Charter House Square is a cross-fertilisation of ideas, materials and techniques resulting from a collaboration between Lubna Chowdhary and Domus Tiles. A series of ten tables, each uniquely tiled by Chowdhary, will be used as a meeting place for visitors, to congregate, dine and share ideas. The tile surfaces will be applied to Enzo Mari’s Autoprogettazione table. The designer’s 1974 manual re-emphasised the empowerment of craft and making, offering nineteen furniture designs using readymade cuts of timber and usually requiring nothing more than a hammer and nails.

Design Exquis by Florian Dussopt and Géraldine Vessière

Showcasing at the Order of St. John Museum during the festival, Design Exquis is an exhibition of four designers from completely opposing disciplines. Based on the ‘Cadavre Exquis’ technique, each designer is inspired by the previous participant’s design, and the exhibition is shrouded by secrecy to ensure each designer’s interpretation is spontaneous and without external influence. The result is a fascinating journey through the creative process and four completely
unique exhibits.

Inspired by the medical history of the Priory of the Order of St. John, Birmingham- based furniture designers Plant & Moss began the chain, passing their finished piece to British designer Dominic Wilcox. Dominic’s design was then interpreted by Georg Oehler, one of the three designers behind Pudelskern, into a completely new product. The final work is an interpretation by artist Matthew Plummer Fernandez, adapting Oehler’s design to exploring emerging digital cultures.

2 (hundred) is company? with Assemble

During the festival, a landscape of 200 chairs will appear en masse in the garden of St James’ church. The chairs will be designed, built and arranged by London-based design and architecture collective Assemble. At times appearing absurd and otherworldy, the multitude of chairs in each arrangement is intended to challenge visitors and create new crowd behaviours. Throughout the festival, the arrangements will be continually changing, facilitating different events and uses throughout each day. The chairs will be manufactured in Assemble’s workshop at Sugarhouse Studios as a prototype low-cost DIY chair and instructional manuals for their fabrication will be given away for free.

Mirare Maze Folly with Mobile Studio

London-based architectural practice Mobile Studio will revisit and reinterpret the concept of the classical garden maze, playing on light and refraction to present Mirare Maze Folly. With walls made entirely of clear acrylic, the structure will sit as a ghost-like folly within the festival, allowing the setting of St John’s Square to permeate through the maze.

The Huts at Clerkenwell Design Week with Architecture for Humanity

Not-for-profit organisation Architecture for Humanity is specially designing and building a village of huts for CDW – each with a different theme reflecting the ethos of the global charity. A Green Hut will be clad with edible plants, a Water Hut will feature an arrangement of pipes and bottles, a Textile Hut will explore soft materials and finally a Remakery Hut will showcase objects from the Brixton Remakery centre. The collaboration follows last year’s successful “Love Architecture” campaign, which saw the “Love Hut” presented in St John’s Lane. Founded in 1999 by British architect Cameron Sinclair, Architecture for Humanity is a global charity which promotes a more sustainable future through the power of professional design.

Making Designers exhibition with onoffice in collaboration with MARK

Taking place during CDW at the SCIN Gallery, The Making Designers exhibition will explore the schoolwork of well-known designers, including Nigel Coates, Michael Marriott, Linda Morey-Smith, Matthew Hilton, Tom Lloyd, Simon Pengelly, Ab Rogers, Gala Wright, Anna Hart, Mark Gabbertas and Terence Woodgate, with more still to be announced.

The exhibition is the initiative of John Miller, founder of MARK, in reaction to proposed reforms in educational policy from education secretary, Michael Gove. Despite a welcome u-turn on the EBacc scheme, which would have all but eliminated design from the UK curriculum, education still faces a steady decline in making and creativity. By exhibiting the earliest work of design industry leaders, Miller and onoffice hope the Making Designers exhibition will boost the importance of “making” and inspire the next generation of designers.

Jaguar and the Royal College of Art (RCA)

The headline sponsor of CDW, UK-based manufacturer of performance and luxury vehicles, Jaguar, will also bring an innovative and engaging design installation to the festival, in partnership with the RCA. Students from both automobile and textiles design courses have been tasked to create their vision of a future design language for Jaguar. The winning creation will be showcased within the Farmiloe Building during CDW, providing a unique reflection on the design process for the car giant. Jaguar’s relationship with the RCA is long established, with Jaguar’s leading designers Ian Callum and Julian Thomson both being RCA alumni of the Masters in Vehicle Design. Jaguar will also show the new F-TYPE at the Farmiloe.

London Transport Mobile Canteen

Transport for London (TfL) and restaurant chain Canteen present the next instalment in their ongoing collaboration, with the London Transport Mobile Canteen. Unveiled at Clerkenwell Design Week, the canteen will take up residence at the Farmiloe Building in the main courtyard. The mobile Canteen has been designed by Very Good and Proper, a design practice founded especially to make products for London’s Canteen restaurants.

From the turn of the century to the 1970s, the London Transport Canteens provided food and beverages to the capital’s transport workers, with over 180 canteens – both static and mobile – feeding over 100,000 employees. The London Transport Pop-Up Canteen is a contemporary celebration of TfL’s canteen history. along with a range of outdoor furniture inspired by TfL’s design heritage. The mobile unit will be serving a selection of classic British food and beverages from Canteen’s menu.

Kartell by Laufen

Dezeen promotion: Italian design brand Kartell has collaborated with Swiss bathroom company Laufen to create a new bathroom collection, which they presented in Milan earlier this month.

Kartell by Laufen

The bathrooms combine durable, innovative ceramic fixtures with a series of translucent polycarbonate furniture and accessories to create open, flexible spaces designed to work more like living rooms.

Kartell by Laufen

Wash basins are available in SaphirKeramik, a new scratch-resistant material that is ultra thin and nearly half the weight of normal ceramics.

Kartell by Laufen

Shelves, towel holders and stools designed with Milan-based duo Ludovica + Roberto Palomba can be ordered in hues including blue, orange or smoke grey, as well as transparent.

Kartell by Laufen

Accessories such as ribbed wall and pendant lights, and circular mirrors with pleated frames, all come in colours to match the furniture plus chrome and gold.

Kartell by Laufen

The range was displayed at Kartell‘s flagship store in Milan during the city’s design week earlier this month.

See all our stories about Kartell »

Here is some additional information from Laufen:

The bathroom Kartell by Laufen, designed by Ludovica + Roberto Palomba, is here.

Kartell by Laufen is a complete integrated project for the bathroom that is making its debut at ISH (Frankfurt, 12-16 March), the fair leader in the bathroom and energy world, followed by a launch to the international public at the Milan Furniture Fair (Milan, 9-14 April), where it was presented at the Kartell flagship store.

Kartell by Laufen

On one hand, Kartell, Italian, creative, colourful and iconic. The family company that has marked the history of design and revolutionised furnishing in the use of plastic materials for over 60 years now. On the other, Laufen, Swiss, rigorous and reliable. For 120 years, a great commitment to make culture in the bathroom and innovation in the production of ceramic sanitaryware.

Two companies that have a great deal in common, which is why they have chosen each other: an industrial approach to production, a vocation in research and technological innovation, an international market, a distribution with hundreds of retailers all over the world and a genuine passion for quality design.

Kartell by Laufen

Serving as the link between these two players are the award winning designers Ludovica + Roberto Palomba , who themselves are leaders in designing for the bathroom.

The Kartell by Laufen bathroom is a complete, integrated project, which came about from the original inspiring approach of Kartell, its design, its quality and its essence, which, through the interpretative project skills of Ludovica+Roberto Palomba, have combined with the innovation of Laufen, giving rise to a collection pervaded with the aroma of emotion.

Kartell by Laufen

Kartell by Laufen places itself on the market of desirability and seduction with a great persuasive capacity. A dream that is realizable, with sophisticated yet accessible, chic yet understated aesthetics.

With design and total quality as its watchwords, the Kartell by Laufen bathroom takes shape as an integrated architecture; an interconnected ecosystem where washbasins, sanitaryware, faucets, units, shower bases, bathtubs, lights and accessories coexist with the maximum flexibility, changing their appearance like chameleons to meet the taste requirements of all. The glassy transparencies of latest-generation polycarbonate and the bare edges of the totemic floor-mounted washbasin will attract those who love minimal, moon-like, rarefied environments; the ambered plastic, the round softness of the washbasin, the bathtub in the style of a infinity pool will seduce a public that is better disposed to decoration, to play, than ever.

Kartell by Laufen

The rigid geometry of the ceramic items is tempered by the multicoloured lightness of the plastic elements.

The colour project is a project within a project – the palette of colours has been reinvented; leaving aside primary colours, it is the tones of the earth, the oranges of sand, steel blue, warm whites tending towards yellow and cold ones turning into blue that emerge. For this free area of the house where the senses yield to the emotions, Kartell by Laufen, the bathroom has been born.

Shared values, the reasons for a project – there are many common values and motivations that have prompted the two companies to share this project.

Kartell by Laufen

Technological innovation

It is a shared project of great innovation, which has required more than three years to develop, the result of the constant research that is part of the DNA of the two companies. The innovation also lies in the wide-ranging appeal of the bathroom, which takes shape in the transparency and expressive capacity of the colour project. With constant research Kartell has beautified the plastic materials to sight and touch and Laufen has revolutionised ceramics by making it an adaptive material.

Introduced in the new Kartell by Laufen bathroom is the revolutionary SaphirKeramik, a material that allows performance characteristics that were unthinkable until today. A radius of curvature of the corners up to 1-2 millimetres (until now the maximum reached was 7-8 millimetres) for washbasins thin as blades, of an extreme lightness, not only visual but actual – SaphirKeramik is a material weighing half that of normal ceramics – equal only to its inimitable mechanical resistance. An avant-garde material that cannot be scratched and withstands impact from chemical agents of detergents and limescale.

Kartell by Laufen

Industrial dimension

The Kartell by Laufen collection is produced to be sold on a large scale, a dimension that must enable the huge resources spent on technological research, design, marketing and communication to be absorbed. High investment is needed for the moulds with which the products are created, and which are employed in the research.
The new bathroom collection developed in synergy by the two brands will be distributed all over the world through the Laufen retail channels.

Design

The idea is shared of design understood as an industrial product capable of manufacturing articles that are stylistically consistent with the DNA of the companies but that are eclectic, that have come about from the creativity of different designers presenting a different project approach. A design that is nevertheless far removed from the “on and off” diktats of the styles and fashions of the moment. The decision to entrust design projects to the best designers in the world and a natural aptitude to creating trends by launching iconic products on the market is common to the paths of both companies.

Kartell by Laufen

Sustainability and ethics

The vision is shared that it is the process and not only the product that must be sustainable. A cradle-to-the-grave approach that considers the total production impact Respect for the environment, the recyclability of materials, the need not to waste either energy or water and to limit CO2 emissions during transport. The idea is shared that the duration of a product is a value of sustainability that eschews a throwaway logic. A concrete response: the imperishable ceramics of Laufen, the indestructible plastic of Kartell. A virtuous circle that considers it ethical on the part of the industry and those who design to pose the problem of what happens both upstream and downstream of the product.

The following text has been provided by Pedrali:

Pedrali double Anniversary – 50 years of successful company activity and 25 years at I Saloni

Pedrali celebrates its 50 years of activity and its 25th attendance at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile in the year 2013.

Pedrali celebrates fiftieth anniversary in Milan

The Milan event represents yearly the international meeting point for furniture and design and the company – run by Monica and Giuseppe Pedrali – embodies perfectly the “made in Italy” essence, which includes tradition and innovation, engineering excellence and creative brilliance.

Pedrali’s products are 100% made in Italy and are manufactured exclusively inside its own production facilities, which have various specialised departments. All plastic and metal products are made in the factory of Bergamo, while wooden products are made at the subsidiary in Udine.

Pedrali celebrates fiftieth anniversary in Milan

The research and development department studies the best technological solutions for the realization of high-quality, safe and durable products through an accurate planning and analysis of the raw materials and the processes. Always taking into account the environmental conservation.

Pedrali’s R&D team includes draftsmen with an experience and knowledge carried out on the fieldwork, who work together with international designers to realize innovative products such as Frida. The chair, designed by Odoardo Fioravanti, won the XXII Compasso d’Oro ADI award in July 2011. A further confirmation of its excellent planning came in December 2012, when the Malmö armchair designed by Michele Cazzaniga, Simone Mandelli and Antonio Pagliarulo won The Good Design award.

Following this trend, Pedrali is announcing the collaboration with the French designer Patrick Jouin, who won the Designer of the year Maison&Objet 2003 award.

On the occasion of the 53rd edition of the Salone Internazionale del Mobile (9th–14th April 2013 – Hall 6 Booth D33, E26) Patrick Jouin has designed for Pedrali the Ester armchair, mainly for the luxury contract sector.

Ester is a mix of elegance and handiness. The attention to details is omnipresent. A steel frame is covered by a polyurethane foam and the comfortable seat is made of crossed elastic belts. The result is a precious leather monolith.

After the success of the project “A Wheel For Pedrali” at Salone del Mobile 2012, which won the Fx International Interior Design Award, the collaboration between Migliore+Servetto Architects and Pedrali will continue for the Salone Internazionale del Mobile 2013 with the “Pedrali mirror” project.

Here are just some of the highlights to look out for:

No Early Birds/Per Soderberg

No Early Birds is a timeless design collection designed and produced by Per Söderberg.
The collection uses a limited set of parts to create a full range of products (pictured above). The powder coated metal cross-leg is the main feature of the No Early Birds collection – architectural in its appearance it almost carries the other structures on its shoulders.

Thoughtful detail and easy assembly have been applied to the collection. The metal joins are functional, visible and elegant. The collection is entirely made in Sweden using quality material and eco-friendly production. The full furniture collection will be exhibited in Milan alongside a new home accessories range including a candelabra and solid brass dishes.

Picasso once said that “inspiration does exist, but it must find you working” and the Roman poet Ovid’s insight was “the glow of inspiration warms us; it is a holy rapture”. Martin and Sharon will discuss what inspires designers of today with a focus on light.

The word ‘Inspiration’ literally means to be “breathed upon”. Throughout the history of mankind, humans have believed that inspiration was a gift coming from the gods, the muses or the divinity itself. Inspiration is the source of all creativity and innovation in artistic endeavor and its manifestation using the medium of light is truly fitting. Philips Lighting University, in collaboration with Light Collective, discusses the nature of inspiration, its importance to us, and how to find it.

A selection of asymmetric reliefs create faint shadows across any surface tiled with the Lines range.

Launched in November 2012, the collection comprises three ranges: Blend, Lines and Change. Blend is designed for a harmonious result of colour tones, sizes and gloss gradations; Lines revolves around the subtle variation of asymmetric reliefs, playing with light and shadow; and Change concentrates on the level of the tiles’ glazing. In full accord to the company’s core values, Mosa Murals is Cradle to Cradle Silver certified and meets current sustainable construction standards.
