Dezeen promotion: Italian beer brand Peroni Nastro Azzurro has announced plans to open a showcase of work by Italian designers, artists and chefs named The House of Peroni.

The project is led by a creative council that includes designers Carlo BrandelliGiovanni Alessi Anghini and Formafantasma, chefs Manuel and Christian Costardi, plus architect Andrea Morgante.

Young Italian creatives including thread artist Giacomo Lion and installation artist Ludovica Gioscia will have work featured in the space, alongside contributions from council members.

The House of Peroni at 41 Portland Place, London, will open its doors from 3 July until the end of the month. Each day events and workshops at the house will focus on a specific topic – encompassing creative disciplines such as fashion, mixology and music.

The Costardi brothers will provide an Italian dining experience accompanied by an exclusive drinks menu created by Gerry Calabrese.

Designer Martijn Rigters is to host a workshop from 19 to 21 July, during which he will help attendees create a foam chair following the contours of their body – click here for registration details.

Peroni Nastro Azzurro creates The House of Peroni to celebrate the new wave of visionaries defining contemporary Italian culture

The premium Italian brand, Peroni Nastro Azzurro, today announced plans to open The House of Peroni, an ambitious project that will showcase the new wave of creative talent defining contemporary Italian culture.

Fifty years ago, Carlo Peroni was inspired to create the first Italian premium lager, Peroni Nastro Azzurro. In this spirit, The House of Peroni wants to inspire others by bringing together visionaries from Italian design, art, fashion, photography, film, music and food and drink to create new expressions of Italian style including design concepts, interactive workshops and dining experiences.

The House of Peroni has been created to celebrate this spirit of creativity and focuses on the Italian creative movement of today – the people, their work and the ideas – that are informing the creative landscape of tomorrow and will be accessible all year round online at www.thehouseofperoni.com and at two London residencies in July and November.

The Creative Council

To lead the project, Peroni Nastro Azzurro has appointed a Creative Council from across the creative arts. They will contribute to The House of Peroni with new work or as part of the programme of experiences and workshops. The Council includes fashion designer Carlo Brandelli, Michelin star chefs Manuel & Christian Costardi, drinks innovator and mixologist Gerry Calebrese, product designer and member of the Alessi family, Giovanni Alessi Anghini, architect Andrea Morgante, who is credited with designing the Ferrari museum and the critically acclaimed design duo Forma Fantasma.

As well as making their own contribution, the Council have identified young Italians that represent the new wave of Italian creativity whose work will be featured in the House of Peroni. These include thread sculpturist Giacomo Lion and installation artist Ludovica Gioscia.

The Website

The House of Peroni exists digitally as www.thehouseofperoni.com a bespoke, immersive space that acts as a permanent window into the realms of Italian fashion, design, art and cuisine. Updated daily, www.thehouseofperoni.com will feature editorial content submitted by a portfolio of established and emerging Italian creative talent including Paola Petrobelli, Gabrielle Rigon and Silvia Bergomi. The site will also showcase the work of the Creative Council and the contents and concepts from both residencies.

The Residencies

The House of Peroni will take up residence in London in July and November to provide guests the opportunity to see, touch, taste and immerse themselves in the work of the Italian creative talent at the heart of The House.

Food & Drink

An innovative Italian dining experience has been developed by Michelin starred chefs Christian and Manuel Costardi from Vercelli in Northern Italy who will be in residence at The House of Peroni throughout July and November. Driven by four key pillars; evolution, passion, emotion and region; the brothers are famously known as having only their name and a passion for culinary evolution in common whilst sharing different views on everything else. It’s this unique approach that enables them to deliver truly out of the ordinary food experiences and is likely to secure them a second Michelin star this year.

A drinks menu and bar has also been created exclusively by Gerry Calabrese, one of the modern greats of the London bar scene and son of the Italian cocktail maestro Salvatore Calabrese.

Events and Workshops

A daily schedule of events is taking place during the residencies. Developed in conjunction with Fashion Fringe, Tent London, London Film Academy and Central St Martin’s, guests will be able to book a place to a wide variety of immersive creative experiences. Hosted by members of the Creative Council and other big names from across the creative arts, the events will include participatory design workshops, exclusive drinking and dining experiences and tours around the capital exploring the influence of Italian style on the capital’s fashion and architectural scene.

Dezeen promotion: creative foundation Be Open is launching an exhibition of student work exploring the effect of sound on cities, as well as a programme to assist young creatives, at the Chelsea College of Art and Design on 6 June.

In collaboration with University of the Arts, London, the Sounding Space Symposium continues Be Open’s research into technology and the five senses begun during last year’s London Design Festival.

Students from Central Saint Martins College of Arts and Design, London College of Communication and Chelsea College of Art and Design were asked to respond to an experimental sound space called the Sound Portal, devised by Be Open, Arup and London Design Festival.

The symposium will showcase each of the college’s projects from 6 to 7 June at the Chelsea College of Art and Design.

Be Open will also use the symposium to launch a programme at focussing on the education of young designers, curated by Domus deputy editor Roberto Zancan.

“I intend to start this new part of the programme connected to the idea of academy,” he told Dezeen. “The aim is to create a bridge between education and real design, considering what could be the future of education, and help students and new designers to find their way.”

The first of three parts to the programme is a ranking system designed to help students find the best course and institution to continue their education.

“[The guide] should give you a list of the best universities and an understanding of their courses,” said Zancan.

Once the top ranking design schools are selected, a master’s program will be set up with these universities.

Finally, an annual €24,000 prize will be awarded to an emerging industrial designer chosen by a jury of young and established designers, plus entrepreneurs and journalists.

“It gives young designers an opportunity to not be part of an insitution or company but a chance to come up with their own ideas and develop their own research,” Zancan said.

Be Open launches the Sounding Space Symposium with University of the Arts, London (UAL) and announces the Inside the Academy program for 2013-2014.

Be Open, the social and cultural initiative committed to creativity and innovation, is continuing its research into the senses via a collaboration with UAL on the Sounding Space Symposium in London from 6 to 7 June.

The foundation sets a theme each year which is developed through different events and projects and is disseminated via the Be Open website and social media channels. The current theme is design for the five senses, involving innovative projects that reach out to the sixth sense, or intuition. Be Open has been developing this concept, combining human perception with the infinite possibilities of contemporary technology to overcome the limitations we currently experience in design. Research into the five senses began at the September 2012 London Design Festival, with a series of events conceived around the Be Open Sound Portal.

Sounding Space marks the conclusion of the Be Open Sound Portal’s residency at Chelsea College of Art and Design. This state-of-the-art experimental sound space, devised by Be Open, Arup and the London Design Festival, was transported to Chelsea College of Art and Design after its residency in Trafalgar Square as one of the London Design Festival 2012 landmark events. Students from Central Saint Martins College of Arts and Design, London College of Communication and Chelsea College of Art and Design have had an opportunity to explore this unique ambisonic sound space in three quite different ways.

‘Sound as Measure’ led by Chelsea College of Art and Design, has seen students experimenting with sound as an integral element of interior and spatial design. The Portal has become the focus of a spectacular external light and soundscape, designed as a counterpoint to the sound world inside the Portal.

Central Saint Martins ‘Nomad Lab’ has been looking at the creative potential of working, ‘nomadically’ across different artistic disciplines. Here the Portal has become a conceptual, as well as a physical space. A mixed-discipline postgraduate group has created trans-disciplinary sound works and participated in practical sessions that deal with data-sonification, audio programming, multi-channel sound and physical computing. The project involves two student-based commissions and one artist commission.

‘Sound, Place, Memory’, led by London College of Communication, involved workshops and themed talks with contributors drawn from the worlds of acoustic archaeology, sensory geography and anthropology, generating three student compositions and two artist compositions.

Sounding Space will showcase each of the college projects, with a focus on urbanism and sound. Keynote speeches will be made by celebrated sound artist Bill Fontana and by Dr John Drever, Head of the Unit for Sound Practice Research, at Goldsmiths, University of London. He promotes ’sound-conscious’ design and management of the urban soundscape, as proposed in The Sounder City: The Mayor’s Ambient Noise Strategy (2004).

Be Open Founder Elena Baturina says, “We wanted to work with UAL’s world-renowned colleges to underline our commitment to supporting both practical study and innovative thinking. Our aim is to help brilliant young creatives to shape the future and to do that, they have to be exposed to inspiring ideas today, ideas they can evolve to improve on our tomorrow.”

Researching sound and its effect on our cities is a theme that will underpin discussion throughout the symposium. Be Open’s ongoing mission is to research the key issues affecting our lives today, working with innovative thinkers who can come up with creative solutions. A crucial function of the Sound Portal has been to look at the problem of noise in our cities and to find ways of mitigating its impact.

From single projects to an integrated system. During Sounding Space, Be Open will also reveal a series of initiatives for its Inside the Academy program. So far, the Foundation has created a series of independent projects linked to education and awards. The new, extended programme offers three ways of supporting young creatives, schools and universities through an awards scheme, a master class program and a ranking system. The ranking system will help students choose the best design course for their ongoing studies; the master class will enrich educational programmes with new content and research; and the Young Talent Award is to give crucial financial support to creatives as they develop their practice.

Open calls for entries will be via Be Open’s website and social networks and a close working relationship with schools and universities will help the Foundation identify designers and design solutions for tomorrow’s world.

Elena Baturina says “Schools are an essential part of what we become as people and as citizens. Choosing the right way to develop your creative talent is crucial and too often young people are left with no support to develop their capabilities. Be Open’s aim is to become a partner for students and institutions to give much needed support and to accompany talented young individuals on their journey towards a bright future.”

Roberto Zancan, will curate the Inside the Academy program in collaboration with Be Open. Zancan has a cosmopolitan eye on design and architecture. He graduated in Venice and was professor at UQAM University and Ecole de Paysage de la Faculté d’Aménagement at the University of Montreal. He is a an academic as well as a journalist and the deputy editor of Domus. He has been researching design, architecture and graphics and has an unconventional and nomadic approach to creativity.

The Be Open Inside the Academy program will be announced at a special press briefing at Chelsea College of Art & Design on 6 June where the three key elements will be introduced:

Be Open Inside the Academy: Design Institute Ranking System

A unique design education ranking system to compare offerings at the key design schools and universities worldwide. The report will become an essential tool for design students.

Be Open’s ranking aims to scout out new institutions, looking for the best of the new universities and courses that are currently often overlooked. The report will focus on the quality and excellence of individual courses, rather than the institution’s overall offering and thus will become a tool for discovering the most dynamic aspects of a college and its strengths in terms of creativity, architecture and design.

Be Open Inside the Academy: Master’s Program

This will be an innovative trans-disciplinary master’s program for the world’s top-ranking design institutes. The idea is to create a bridge between design academies and scientific programs, research laboratories, high-tech and innovative companies. The program will be financed so that institutions can offer students the right environment to further develop their abilities and vision.

Be Open Inside the Academy: Young Talent Award

This new prize for the design world will be dedicated to young, emerging designers who have just begun to express their ideas and visions for the future. A world-class jury will select an annual winner who will receive from a 24,000 Euro allowance for the year, crucial funding so that they can continue to develop their work and explore their potential. The jury will feature younger designers, such as Raw Edges and established names such as Barber&Osgerby, entrepreneurs such as Giorgio Galli (Worldwide Artistic Director Timex Group) and selected journalists.

The Foundation is also introducing Be Open Business Development, a unique opportunity for young creatives to propose their start-up ideas so that they can be evaluated and ultimately progressed. The business development program includes both spontaneous submissions through the Foundation’s website and calls for proposals through Be Open’s social networks. The latter will be on specific themes and facilitate research and development of innovative ideas through partnerships with leading academic institutions.

The Be Open Sound Portal program and Sound Symposium at UAL bring the Foundation’s sensory year to a close and a new theme will be launched for 2013. This will be the interaction between the North, South, East and West in terms of culture and the different, creative approaches to dealing with critical urban issues of our time.

Dezeen promotion: Tokyo Designers Week is calling for design professionals, young creators and design schools to enter the Asia Awards, which will be presented during this year’s event from 26 October to 4 November.

The inaugural awards program will honour projects in categories ranging from architecture and product design to fashion and photography, under the themes Hello Future and Festival.

The awards will include presentations by finalists and critique sessions from the selection committee, plus a conference and party for exhibitors and students from different countries.

Asia Awards will be held to foster young talented designers, the future of the creative industries. We are now looking for professionals, young creators and school exhibitors.

Design Association NPO (Venue: Minami Aoyama Minato-City, Tokyo President Kenji Kawasaki) will be holding a Design & Art Event, Tokyo Designers Week 2013, at Meiji-Jingu Gaien (In front of Meiji-Jingu Memorial Picture Gallery, Tokyo).

One of the two main contents of the event represented by the “School Exhibition” & the “Young Creators Exhibition” have showcased a large number of students and young designers from both inside and outside Japan.

This year, a comprehensive Asian creative award called the “Asia Awards” has been established to gather the creative power from all over the world in the center of Tokyo, thus trying to discover young talents that will lead the next generation and become a platform for students and young designers to make their strides to the global stage.

We are implementing the “Professional Exhibition” for top creators and designers, the “Young Creators Exhibition” for young designers and artists under the age of 30, and the “School Exhibition” for Design & Art schools, colleges, universities and graduate schools.

The representatives of Design Association NPO, Architect Toyo Ito and Art Director Katsumi Asaba will be distributing several awards (Grand Prix 1,000,000JPY, Semi Grand Prix 300,000JPY, etc) for the creators of the Asia Awards.

Tokyo Designers Week 2013

Tokyo Designers Week started systematically as Designers’ Saturday in 1986 and was renamed as Tokyo Designers Week in the year 1997, setting its venue continuously every fall for 28 years in the city of Tokyo. It is an international design event that gathers the excellent design and art from all over the world in areas close to our every-day lives, such as architecture, interior, product design, graphic design and art. Since 2005, the event has been provided the central venue of Meiji Jingu Gaien Mae (In front of Meiji-Jingu Memorial Picture Gallery) and developed into an event that attracting in 2012 a record number of over 100,000 people with highly sensitive opinions in the creative field. The event has allowed companies, organizations, embassies, schools, designers to become highly recognized by providing a place to announce their latest design and art through PR, product promotion, marketing and testing for branding purposes.

Dezeen promotion: over 500 exhibitors will showcase their work at design festival DMY Berlin, taking place at the former Berlin Tempelhof Airport next week from 5 to 9 June.

International designers, companies and universities will exhibit new products and prototypes at the central exhibition located at Tempelhof, a former airport close to Berlin city centre.

More than eighty self-initiated exhibitions taking place across the city will make up the wider Berlin Design Week, continuing until 11 June.

On the evening of 6 June, designers will open up their studios to the public for free as part of Night Shift, a concept launched last year in association with Create Berlin.

The Berlin Design Week will start on June 5, 2013 with the opening of the 11th DMY International Design Festival at Berlin’s historic Tempelhof Airport.

From June 5 to 9, 2013 DMY International Design Festival will present more than 500 designers from around 30 countries who show pioneering products and prototypes at Berlin Tempelhof Airport. For the second year in a row, DMY hosts the Design Award of the Federal Republic of Germany and presents all submissions and nominations in a large survey exhibition, which will also be on display at Berlin Tempelhof Airport. As an additional attraction, DMY presents in cooperation with Create Berlin the 2012 successfully launched “night shift – long night of design studios”: More than 50 studios open their doors on the evening of June 6 throughout Berlin.

Central Exhibition

In the hangars of Berlin Tempelhof Airport, over 500 international designers, companies and universities present new products, prototypes and material innovations. 14 renowned universities provide insight into their current design research while design institutions from all over the world show group exhibitions as well as country and city presentations, including for instance the Lodz Art Center or the House of Design in Groningen (NL).

Country Focus Poland

Poland is the fifth host country of the DMY International Design Festival. In cooperation with the Polish Institute Berlin, this years’ country focus draws particular attention on the design landscape of Poland. With presentations from more than 40 design studios, companies, design universities and thematic exhibitions, the focus provides a comprehensive look at the contemporary design production of our second largest neighbouring country: from retrospectives of established design studios and developments of established brand producers, project shows from all leading design schools in the country to new projects and prototypes of talented young designers. In the professional field, the focus is on premium brands in the branches of interior design, furniture, lighting and home accessories.

Dezeen promotion: online design retailer Fab is calling for entries to its Disrupting Design competition in New York on 21 May.

Coinciding with the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF), the competition invites designers to present their work to a panel of experts including top designers, journalists and brands. Three winning projects will be selected to go into production and be sold on Fab.com.

World’s number one design store announces next design call out for New York City

Following the overwhelming response to its Disrupting Design competition held in Milan in April, Fab – the world’s number one design store – is pleased to announce that a second call out for new product designs will take place in New York City during the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) on Tuesday 21 May 2013.

In Milan, designers from around the world were invited to pitch new products to a panel of design experts that included Bradford Shellhammer, founder and chief design officer for Fab; Yves Behar, designer and founder of Fuseproject and chief creative officer of Jawbone; Rob Forbes, founder of Design Within Reach and PUBLIC Bikes; and Amanda Dameron, editor in chief of Dwell Magazine, among others. Over 150 designers from over 30 countries around the world pitched products for Fab to put into production and sell to their 12 million members around the globe. While Fab initially planned on selecting three winners, the quality of entrants resulted in a selection of 12 winning product designs.

Among the shortlisted products are a selection of vases, tabletop items, throws, clothing racks, and more.

Following the success of the design call-out in Milan, Fab is pleased to announce Disrupting Design in New York City, May 21, 2013. Designers from around the world are invited to bring their product ideas, portfolios, and prototypes to the auditorium at Jacob K Javits Convention Center (655 W 34th Street) from 1 PM – 3 PM on Tuesday, May 21, 2013. A panel of experts will select the best products to put into production and sell on Fab.

“We were so impressed with the designers we met in Milan that we decided we couldn’t wait to do the whole thing all over again,” says Bradford Shellhammer, Fab’s Founder and Chief Design Officer. “At Fab, we are constantly reinventing ourselves and rethinking what Fab can be. Dezeen promotion: the new collection of furniture by Arper will be on show at the Italian design brand’s London showroom during Clerkenwell Design Week from 21 to 23 May.

First shown in Milan last month, the new products include the triangular series of Ply tables and stools by Lievore Altherr Molina that Dezeen previously reported on.

Also on display will be the Aava chairs by Finnish designer Antti Kotilainen. Milled from wood and covered in birch, oak, walnut or beech veneer, it comes with legs in wood or chrome, or a sled base.

Two coat racks by Lievore Altherr Molina have been added to the range: Song with eight pivoting arms shaped like musical notes, and Wing with pivoting arms gently curving upwards towards their tips.

Ply by Lievore Altherr Molina

Triangular in form and modular in nature, Ply is a system of low tables and stools rendered in fluid lines of wood. Engineered to create a continuous line from top through legs, its reduced silhouette and warm material complement its dynamic form. Alone or in groups, Ply’s playful geometry of surfaces is like the game of Tangram, shape and color work together to create open compositions.

Tables are available in different table top variations, height (36 cm and 44 cm) in oak, black and red. Stools are available in three heights (44, 64 and 76 cm) for dining and bar applications in two colors: natural oak and black.

Aava transforms an essential and efficient form to evocative through the texture and warmth of wood. Soft curves yield a contemporary silhouette that is both striking yet sensitive, an adaptive form that can speak or assimilate to any environment.

Made for both residential and contract use, Aava’s wooden shell and base are fabricated in a diverse range of materials, colors and finishes. Precompound wood skillfully milled in variable thickness and sheathed in veneer to accentuate its sinuous silhouette, its shell is available in a range of wood materials: birch painted black, birch painted white, natural birch, natural oak color, natural walnut color and beechwood.

Bases include wooden legs, sled or chrome 4-legs: all with or without armrests. Chrome 4-leg and sled bases version are stackable for large-scale use and storage. A stool version of Aava is also available in two heights (65 and 75 cm).

Music is all in the composition, in the arrangement of diverse tones to create a harmonious, engaging whole. Song is a freestanding or wall-mounted coat hanger composed of eight arms, shaped like musical notes that twist and turn to create diverse, dynamic compositions. Though designed to serve a purpose, it serves well as an object of visual play and geometry, well suited to any space in need of hanging, interest and engagement. Add coats, scarves, a hat and it comes to life.

Available wall-mounted in 8 or 16 arms or freestanding in 8, 16 or 24 arms. Freestanding version is available with three different bases in white, dark gray and natural oak. Fabricated and cast in painted metal with slight texture in dark gray.

New materials to top Dizzie table by Lievore Altherr Molina

Dizzie is a demonstration of something that may seem obvious but can have unexpectedly pleasing results: a sole change in color or material can radically alter appearance and attitude. With a deceptively simple, visually striking silhouette, Dizzie tables (in 50cm height) take on a sophisticated turn with subtly textured dark grey base and MDF veneered tops in brushed black, brushed white and natural oak.

The sensuous, organic shape of the base suggests a drop of mercury. The finely grained, matte surface of the top is a tactile, sensuous cut through that sleek surface.

Combining a curved plywood shell and a solid wood frame, the Frida chair weighs just 2.7 kilograms.

The taste of wood

Since 2006 Pedrali has set up its production centre dedicated to wood in Manzano, in the province of Udine. In the The Chair Triangle, once the world capital of the chair, Pedrali has decided to focus on quality, technology and Made in Italy tradition to create a center specialized in the development, engineering and manufacturing of wooden furniture.

The fruits of this work are seen as early as 2011 when the Frida chair designed by Odo Fioravanti won the XXII Compasso d’Oro ADI Award for the “simple sculptural beauty”.

Frida is an oak chair, with its refined technology, represents a reference point in the wood working. The design challenge was to let the material compose a three-dimensional form, which is innovative compared to the tradition of the wood chairs. The most extraordinary element is the overlapping of a three-dimensional shell on a solid wood frame. If separated, these two elements are the symbol of the fragility but once they are joined together, they become a resistant and lightweight product. The shell is made of a three-dimensional curved plywood, 3.5 mm thickness only, that gives comfort and a contemporary appeal. The solid wood frame is featured by geometrical sections with variable shapes, that become thinner along the edges, so to give the chair a light image, enhancing the conceptual strength of the shell. It weighs 2.7 kg only.

Malmö armchair

In 2013 the collaboration with Fioravanti has created a new project: Babila, a chair in ash wood able to move along tradition and innovation with great agility. The legs and the back eyelets are a reminiscence of the craft wooden chairs, while for the plywood shell he experimented the technique of variable thickness working process. The result is an airy and comfortable sitting with a careful and accurate use of wood. Babila is available also with four legs frame in steel tube Ø 16mm, or sled frame in steel rod Ø 10mm.

Malmö, designed by Cazzaniga-Mandelli-Pagliarulo, is a collection of ash wood furniture born from an imaginary journey along the sides of a Scandinavian lake. When, in 2012, the chair, the armchair and the table have been presented, immediately garnered the interest of the market. Both the chair and armchair have ash timber frame in bleached or black stained finish; multilayer, fabric or leather upholstered shell. Malmö extendable table has ash wooden legs matched with solid laminate or ash veneered table top.

The armchair also won two international awards: the Good Design Awards, the prestigious award sponsored by the Museum of Architecture and Design “Chicago Athenaeum” and the Red Dot Design Award 2013.

For the Salone del Mobile 2013 the Malmö family expanded to new contexts entering in lounge environments, waiting areas and cafes. The collection has been enriched with a lounge armchair, the coffee tables and the barstools, all made of solid ash frame with tapered legs.The result is a unique Scandinavian taste of exceptional lightness.

As evidence of the efforts made in this “wood project”, Pedrali has obtained the FSC Chain of Custody certification, which guarantees the origin of the raw material from forests managed correctly and with responsibility, according to strict environmental, social and economic standards.

This means that Pedrali for its production has chosen to use raw material from FSC certified forests, in full respect of the territory. In addition, during the project development, technologies that use materials as alternative to solid wood are preferred. Materials such as sandwich panel, veneer and plywood imitate the most prestigious essences allowing the use of the complete plant.

Massproductions are presenting a new chair this year, suitable for dining in restaurants and homes. Made in solid beech or oak, ‘The Waiter Chair’ is both comfortable and classic. The brand will also show their debut ‘Tio’ collection at INTRO NY, consisting of chairs and tables in steel wire produced in a computer controlled bending machine.

Resident is a contemporary design and manufacturing company from New Zealand. Established in 2011, Resident combines an authentic blend of craft, engineering and innovation to produce a refined collection of furniture and lighting.

Resident will present a selection of their recent designs, including the ‘Segment Shade’ by Phil Cuttance. The Segment Shade is a ceramic pendant light made up of 11 different faces, each cut on a different angle to reveal a distinctive horizontal texture. LELO Design Award 2013 call for entries

LELO Design Award 2013

Dezeen promotion: sex toy brand LELO is calling for designers to enter products and experiences that stimulate the senses to this year’s LELO Design Award.

The Swedish company is inviting designers and artists to submit designs that activate smell, taste and sound in new and innovative ways.

The awards will be presented in two categories: fashion and accessories, and products and spaces. Each category winner will receive a €1000 prize and the five best concepts will be exhibited during the London Design Festival in September.

Judges include designers Lanzavecchia + Wai, whose edible furniture we featured yesterday, and erotic film director Erika Lust.

LELO, the two-time Red Dot Design Award-winning Swedish designer brand and the world’s leading provider of intimate lifestyle products, is set to present an award for concepts that reveal new possibilities for pleasure across a variety of fields.

As a company with a portfolio of premium personal massagers, LELO is challenging next-generation innovators, designers and artists all around the world to come up with products and experiences that offer alternative kinds of sensory experiences.

Spread Pleasure Through Design

The overwhelming majority of existing products rely on just two senses: sight and touch. However, LELO believes it’s time to extend the possibilities of design by activating the senses of smell, taste and sound, with the goal of proving that true pleasure is multi-sensory.

Applicants are encouraged to discover the vibrancy of pleasure through design, exploring all materials, possibilities of technology and what it really means to feel good. While LELO’s expertise is sensual pleasure, the company is in search of what other possibilities remain unexplored.
In essence, the LELO Design Award provides a chance for designers to give a personal interpretation of pleasure that pushes sensory boundaries.

The LELO Design Award features two award categories:

1. Fashion and accessories – in what way can the clothes and accessories we wear become tools for pleasure and entertainment? What playful and unexpected functions could they hold? Make fashion fun and explore new possibilities for pleasure!

2. Products and spaces – micro-technologies, augmented reality and responsive and smart materials are already changing the ways we interact with objects and spaces. Generate a unique idea and think about how interaction can deliver new forms of pleasure.

Prizes

Two 1000€ prizes will be rewarded—one for each category. The winners will also be connected to the most prestigious global design publications, highlighting designers’ profiles and concepts in addition to being featured on the LELO.com homepage.
Furthermore, the judges’ favorite five design concepts will be showcased in October during London Design Week.
