Fattorini+Rizzini+Partners’ MEET sofa combines “sound absorption” with versatility

Milan 2014: what started as a conversation between Swedish furniture brand Offecct and Milan-based Fattorini+Rizzini+Partners at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile in 2013 has come full circle with the launch of the MEET sofa (+ slideshow).

“Our very first meeting during Salone del Mobile in 2013 quickly turned into a fascinating philosophical discussion about what informal meetings mean, and from there Fattorini+Rizzini+Partners have carried out this project perfectly,” said Offecct design manager Anders Englund.

Design studio Fattorini+Rizzini+Partners‘ brief for MEET was for a sofa fit for different types of activity, from work and informal meetings to casual time.

“When we work on projects aimed at the environment between office and residential space, we always want to see and feel how this product will actually work in a space so it can be of full service to the people who will use it,” said chief designer Robin Rizzini.

“We wanted to create a sofa that gives you the feeling of being virtually anywhere,” he continued. “Offecct’s new sofa system MEET is designed for this purpose. Its functions address Offecct’s main areas: the sustainability and sound absorbing qualities of their products, the importance of injecting life through plants in indoor environments and Offecct’s craftsmanship in working with wood and fabrics.”

Luca Nichetto’s Notes screens hang from the ceiling

Stockholm 2014: Italian designer Luca Nichetto has created a set of ceiling-mounted office dividers for Swedish brand Offecct (+ slideshow).

Luca Nichetto designed the Notes room dividers for Offecct Lab, a branch of the brand that develops sustainable products and furniture for the workplace.

Nichetto took influence from washing hung above the narrow alleyways in his home town of Venice when designing the screens.

“When kids play football on the street, the clothes hanging over the lines muffle the sound of the bouncing football and screaming kids,” he explained. “So I used that as inspiration and tried to transfer it in to an industrial product.”

Each screen is constructed from two upholstered boards with rounded corners that sandwich a layer of recycled felt.

The felt helps to absorb noise from both sides of the division, but the pieces still allows a visual link between the spaces they separate at seated eye level.

“My brief from Offecct was to create a new kind of sound panel that didn’t have to be fixed on the wall but more like a free standing object,” said Nichetto. “At the same time it should work with recyclable felt made of waste from the upholstery production.”

The panels mount on rails so they can be slid side-to-side to create different arrangements. The collection includes five shapes, which can be covered in a selection of fabrics.

Offecct will present the range at this year’s Stockholm Furniture and Lighting Fair, which starts today as part of Stockholm Design Week.

The table can be expanded over time and once it gets to certain size it can be used by employees working independently at one end while a meeting is held at the other.

“We wanted to create a hybrid between a meeting table and a writing desk; a table big enough to work undisturbed with your laptop but still be able to start up a conversation with someone sitting opposite,” said studio co-founder Eero Koivisto. “Even if there is a meeting taking place at the far end of the table.”

The table surface of each module is held up by two chunky cylindrical legs and braced by a square beam, which contains power sockets at each end. Electric wiring runs through the beams and down through the legs to keep the workspace free of cables.

“We have maximised a regular table with all the functions demanded in a modern office today,” said Koivisto. “You could say that this table is the equivalent of a Hercules aeroplane.”

Circus tables by Formfjord for Offecct

Product news: these tables based on a circus ringmaster’s podium were designed by German office Formfjord for Swedish brand Offecct.

Circus tables by Formfjord for Offecct

Referencing the zig-zagging patterns found on the traditional stands used by circus leaders, the circular platforms are supported by Y-shaped metal elements that angle inwards at each joint. These elements all connect to a metal ring that forms the base.

The tables are finished in black or white laquer and the range includes various heights and diameters, plus a plant pot stand. The collection was presented at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan earlier this year.

Other new products designed for Offecct include seats with curvy backrests by UNStudio and chunky grey seating by Jean-Marie Massaud, both also presented in Milan.

Formfjord have also made concrete pebbles for stone-skipping across water.

Formfjord is cooperating with Offecct for the first time, and the first resulting product is the table Circus. The main idea when Formfjord developed Circus was to think not only of the product they were developing, but also the whole living space where life happens. Formfjord wanted to see the whole living space as an arena, a circus.

“The table defines the room and sets the atmosphere – it even changes the behavior of the room. Creating a playful design for the table makes the living room a wonderful place,” says Formjord, the duo behind the table.

Fabian Baumann and Sönke Hoof of Formfjord come from different backgrounds; Baumann is a mechanical engineer and Hoof a product designer. When creating their designs, the duo uses their different perspectives to enhance the creative process and develop products that functions well – technologically and ecologically, ergonomically and emotionally, strategically and economically.

“To us it is important that our partners stand for good values. Today everyone considers themselves green in their way of working, but Offecct truly is in all aspects,” Formfjord continues.

“We always search for companies that can bring out good cooperation, and that is not always easy, but has turned out to be true with Offecct,” Formfjord concludes.

Airberg by Jean-Marie Massaud for Offecct

Milan 2013: French designer Jean-Marie Massaud has created chunky grey seating resembling the jagged forms of an iceberg for Swedish furniture brand Offecct.

Massaud’s Airberg collection for Offecct comprises a long sofa and a chunky chair, both with an asymmetrical backrest.

Airberg by Jean-Marie-Massaud for Offecct

“Airberg consists of a structural case that gives the impression of being filled with a vacuum, but is in reality filled with a flexible padding material,” explained Offecct.

The collection, currently still in prototype form, is one of the first results from the new Offecct Lab research and development initiative.

Here’s some more information from Offecct:

Airberg by Jean-Marie Massaud is an innovative piece of furniture that breaks with conventions.

Airberg is one of the first results to come out of the work at Offecct Lab, a strategic initiative designed to concentrate Offecct’s efforts in the development of new solutions and new products. Airberg is not ready for production yet, but should be seen as a result of an ongoing R&D process where Offecct and Jean-Marie Massaud dared to develop a piece of seating furniture for the meeting places of the future.

The inspiration behind the form of Airberg is a combination of a comfortable, inviting piece of seating furniture and an iceberg filled with vacuum. The furniture’s abstract form is light in its expression and Airberg is contemporary both in its design and in the technique used.

“Offecct is prominent in offering the market a strong and varied product selection. This means that with Airberg I could take a step further and break with conventions and question existing norms of what a piece of seating furniture usually looks like,” says Jean-Marie Massaud.

Airberg consists of a structural case which gives the impression of being filled with a vacuum, but is in reality filled with a flexible padding material. The unique craftsmanship used in the production of Airberg makes it possible to create a deconstructed piece of furniture that is more defined in its asymmetry. Jean-Marie Massaud has created a piece of furniture that is comfortable, sustainable and competent, making it highly contemporary.

“Offecct has always worked continuously with product development and lately we have intensified our efforts to taking yet another step in creating innovative and challenging products for the international market,” says Kurt Tingdal, CEO, Offecct.

“With Airberg, Offecct, together with Jean-Marie Massaud, take a great leap in that direction resulting in a unique piece of furniture that has to be experienced,” Kurt Tingdal concludes.

UNStudio’s collection for Swedish brand Offecct includes Studio Easy Chair, a single seat with a wing on its left or right side, Studio Twin Beam, a pair of seats linked by a small table, and Studio Twin, which has a solid base that mirrors the backrest.

“The Studio Twin design not only encourages communication by enabling the sitters to face each other whilst sitting side-by-side, but is also designed to spatially introduce two visual orientations to the locations in which it is used,” said UNStudio head Ben van Berkel.

The seats have a laminated wood frame and are upholstered in fabric or leather, while the bases are available in black, white or silver lacquer.

UNStudio has just announced its relaunch in June as an “open-source architecture studio” inspired by technology start-ups. The news was originally revealed by van Berkel in March in an interview with Dezeen at the launch of Canaletto, a residential tower designed by the firm for east London. Here’s some more information from Offecct:

Offecct initiates cooperation with UNStudio and presents the series Studio, a system of seating furniture that can be adapted to any need or environment. The series will be included in Offecct’s business Travel & Navigation together with many products suitable for different kinds of waiting areas, terminals, cruise ships and airports etc.

The Studio series consists of a number of different versions: Studio Twin, Studio Twin Beam and Studio Easy Chair Right/Left. The Studio Twin version creates a seating element for communication and exchange, whereas the Studio Easy chair Right/Left offer possibilities for the user to choose between open and private arrangements. The Studio Twin Beam creates opportunities for use in public spaces and for more playful organisations in public settings.

The collection is ideal in many varied settings, such as airport waiting areas, lobbies, offices and libraries.

The concept for the Studio series was to create a light, comfortable and easily rearranged collection of seating elements which incorporate a variety of spatial gestures with specific emphasis on versatility in communication, says Ben van Berkel, co-founder and architect at UNStudio.

The varied designs within the series cater for the needs and wishes of the individual in both public and private spaces. The Studio Twin not only encourages communication by enabling the possibility to face each other whilst sitting side-by-side, but is also designed to spatially introduce two visual orientations to the locations in which it is used, van Berkel continues.

The Studio Easy Chair Right/Left are highly versatile, allowing the user to choose their level of connectivity to both the people and the space around them, he concludes.

In accordance with Offecct’s high demands on sustainability, effort has been put into choice of materials, energy, transportation and logistics to assure a product that has a minimal impact on nature.

Here’s some more information from Offecct:

Offecct proudly presents the elegant chair Cape, the first addition to the collection by one of the greatest names on the contemporary design scene: the Japanese designer Nendo/Oki Sato. Cape is designed by Nendo, who is also the Guest of Honour at the Stockholm Furniture Fair 2013 as well as the Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan 2012.

Cape is a complex chair with an exciting look, with ultra-thin dimensions and a very low weight, made possible by a collaboration between Offecct and Swedish Steel AB in the development of new steel materials. The development behind Cape has taken place within the Offecct Lab, a comprehensive strategic initiative which aims to concentrate Offecct’s efforts in the development of new solutions and new products.

Nendo draws inspiration from everyday life. He describes his products as functional, simple and friendly. Every day we encounter small wow-moments – or as Nendo expresses them, “!” moments – that are easily forgotten. With his design Nendo wishes to capture these interesting moments, collect them and reformulate them into something that is easy to understand.

Cape is an elegant chair that gives the illusion of a cape spread over a frame. The subtle twist in the design of Cape makes the chair stand out all the while being obvious and simple in its design language. Simply “ ! ”.

Offecct always works with authentic materials in its production. The tasteful seat of Cape is molded in wood produced from controlled sources and the stand is made of an extremely light material which gives the chair its elegant shape.

“Offecct has a long history of cooperating with some of the world’s most prominent designers,” says Kurt Tingdal, CEO, Offecct. “That is why it is both natural and pleasing that we can present the chair Cape; a first, and in our opinion excellent, result of the cooperation with Nendo,” Kurt Tingdal concludes.

Origami – a Sofa for Intimate Conversations and Privacy

In the spring of 2010 OFFECCT launched Origami, a comfortable contemporary version of the classical easy chair, developed by OFFECCT in collaboration with Spanish designer Carlos Tíscar.

Origami turned out to fill a need in the market where easy chairs with higher backs are in high demand. To meet this demand OFFECCT now launches the Origami sofa as a complement to last year’s easy chair.

“Today, we are more and more working and communicating in public places, and Origami’s high back gives people who sit and work on a computer or an iPad, or having an intimate conversation, a valued sense of integrity and unprecedented comfort” says Kurt Tingdal.
The sofa is not just an expanded version of the chair, but an entirely new piece of furniture with a new suspension system.

The name Origami comes from the Japanese art of folding paper into 3D objects. Like origami, Tíscar’s easy chair and sofa is built by angular sections of straight lines. Tíscar has worked with contrasts rather than volumes, and the result is a piece of furniture that is powerful despite its light appearance.

The following information is from Offecct:

Inviting freedom – the Grand Sofa by Monica Förster

OFFECCT launches the Grand sofa designed by Monica Förster. When Monica Förster commenced the work to develop a sofa for OFFECCT the initial idea was to create a piece that conveyed the feeling of something improvised and sketched. The first ideas were transferred to a scale model where Förster worked intensively to create a shape that conveyed a sense of freedom.

Thereafter OFFECCT’s product development department took over and translated it into a model at full scale. Monica Förster worked closely with OFFECCT to develop details, proportions and relations between volume and surface.

”OFFECCT’s first prototype captured the idea of the couch very well, and it has been a rewarding project that resulted in Grand, a sofa that is characterized by softness and asymmetry, creating an inviting sense of freedom” says Monica Förster.

Grand is a large and generous sofa. Grand comes in a right, a left and a straight version with an accompanying footstool and an optional divan.
