Dezeen Screen: making of the LunaTik by Scott Wilson

LunaTik watch

Dezeen Watch Store now stocks LunaTik, which converts the Apple iPod Nano into a multi-touch watch. Meanwhile, Dezeen Screen now has a new movie of designer Scott Wilson telling the story of how he raised a million dollars to develop the product.

The LunaTik features a CNC-milled, aircraft-grade aluminium housing and a silicone rubber strap.

The housing holds the iPod Nano while still allowing access to the on/off switch and volume controls as well as the headphone jack and docking cable input. This means users can access all the functions of the Nano without removing it from their wrist.

The housing is available in silver, anodised red and PVD-coated black plus Dezeen Watch Store is also stocking the new limited-edition TakTik model (above), which has a camouflage band. Only 1,000 of the TakTik model have been produced, each band with its own unique woodland camouflage pattern created by hand-placing various camouflage-coloured pieces of silicone in the compression moulding tool.

About The Event: Clerkenwell Design Week is a three-day annual festival celebrating design’s creative richness, its social impact and its power for change. Run in partnership by Media 10 and Mix Media Ltd, the event was established to celebrate Clerkenwell as the heart of the design industry. The 2010 festival proved a huge success attracting over 18,000 registered visitors who flocked to over 150 events.

Clerkenwell has long been regarded as the creative hub of the UK. A stone’s throw from the city, it is home to a plethora of new media agencies, graphic and interactive design studios, more than 200 architectural practices (more per square mile than anywhere else on the planet), and is home to over 60 international design brands.

A Brief History: The name Clerkenwell comes from the Clerks’ Well in Farringdon Lane, where London parish clerks performed mystery plays in the Middle Ages. Since the Industrial Revolution it has housed craft workshops, notably printers, clockmakers and jewelers; printing and bookbinding (conveniently near the Smithfield tanneries) still flourish, as do graphic designers. The 1990s saw a revival of Clerkenwell’s faded fortunes, when architecture, design and other creative firms flocked to its comparatively cheap but central studio and workshop premises.

Jaguar Cars Limited is a manufacturer of luxury sports cars and sports saloons based in the UK. One of the best known and best loved automotive brands in the world, Jaguar has a long and distinguished history, during which the company has produced many iconic vehicles – including the XK120 in 1948, Mark VII saloon in 1950, the C-TYPE and D-TYPE race cars that dominated Le Mans during the 1950s, and the legendary E-TYPE, originally launched in 1961 and arguably the most famous sports car of all time. Jaguar remains at the forefront of the global luxury automotive industry.

Here are some more details from VOID:

VOID Watches is a new, independent boutique watch brand launched in 2008 as the single vision of Swedish designer David Ericsson. VOID Watches has a unique take on watch design using simple yet expressive shapes, giving our watches an almost architectural expression. Just like a great building is designed to fit its environment, all VOID Watches are made to sit perfectly on your wrist.

The design draws heavily on the Scandinavian design tradition using simple geometries and materials often found in architecture. The solid stainless steel case comes in four different colors/surfaces (black, brushed, polished and gold), the watch has a mineral glass crystal and the strap is made of genuine leather. The main objective has been to create a unique product using as simple geometries as possible and bring them to life by using honest, traditional materials. The movement is made in Japan.

VOID – In astronomy, voids are the empty spaces between filaments, the largest-scale structures in the Universe, that contain very few, or no, galaxies. Voids typically have a diameter of 40 to 500 million light years.

VOID Watches is a fully owned sub brand of VOID International LTD and is registered in Hong Kong.

Dezeen Screen launches next week at www.dezeenscreen.com. Here’s our press release:

30 March 2011

Press release

Dezeen Screen launches at Ventura Lambrate

Dezeen, the online architecture and design magazine, launches its dedicated video website at the Ventura Lambrate design district in Milan this year (12-17 April).

Called Dezeen Screen – www.dezeenscreen.com – the site aims to become the world’s leading resource for video content about architecture, design and interiors.

The site, which will follow Dezeen’s much-lauded and intuititve blog format, will feature short films made by Dezeen as well as movies submitted by architects and designers about their work.

Dezeen editor-in-chief Marcus Fairs said: “Video is becoming an increasingly important tool for communicating architecture and design via the internet, and film-making has become an essential part of our journalistic output at Dezeen. So it makes sense to build a site specifically to showcase video content.”

At Milan this year the Dezeen film crew will be documenting events at Ventura Lambrate, profiling exhibitors and interviewing leading figures. If you’ve got a project in the area, we’d love to hear from you! Films will be posted on www.dezeenscreen.com during and after the week.

Dezeen Screen at Ventura Lambrate is in collaboration with JamScape, the revolutionary audio installation by Jawbone and Yves Behar of fuseproject at Pianissimo Grande (number 05 on the Ventura Lambrate guide and map).

Working from a dedicated studio within JamScape, the Dezeen team will edit and upload content during the week, while highlights will be broadcast on a TV screen at JamScape. Pop into the studio to see us at work or to tell us about your project!

Dezeen Screen is calling on designers to submit short movies about their own work for publication on the site.

Our studio at Ventura Lambrate will also showcase watches from Dezeen Watch Store.

Sol by Shin Azumi at Dezeen Watch Store

Sol by Shin Azumi at Dezeen Watch Store

Dezeen Watch Store: Sol, Shin Azumi‘s solar-powered watch for Japanese brand IDEA, is now available at Dezeen Watch Store.

Sol by Shin Azumi at Dezeen Watch Store

In contrast with normal solar-powered watches that seek to hide away the photovoltaic cell, Azumi draws attention to the cell by mounting it in Sol’s moulded polyurethane strap to give it the same prominence as the digital display.

Sol by Shin Azumi at Dezeen Watch Store

The solar cell supplements the watch’s internal battery.

Sol by Shin Azumi at Dezeen Watch Store

Here are some more details from Azumi:

Sol

The concept of this watch has come from my love of being in the sun. Sunshine provides me with a simple pleasure and gives energy to my body.

The design also shows my expectations and respect for solar power, as a technology that creates a clean source of energy.

Thinking about a typical solar watch, the solar cell is often disguised or hidden away from view. I wanted to put focus on the solar cell as a design feature to express its importance.

Untrod

I wear a product. Beyond fashion or status. This is a new design project which questions existing product typologies.

“Untrod” is the project which challenges to find the product design possibility beyond existing status.

By collaborating with designers who work successfully world-wide, we’ll seek to question existing product typologies and try to give these a new meaning. The first theme is “watch”, but our first point of view is never to see a watch in its conventional form factor. In this project you will meet a new “watch” both in concept and its meaning.
