Brilliant Bob Dylan Interactive Video

We tend to think of interactive music videos as a clever way to lure audiences into listening to a new track. But as this excellent new promo for Bob Dylan’s classic song Like A Rolling Stone shows, they can be a great showcase for old music too…

Like A Rolling Stone didn’t have a music video to promote it when it first came out in 1965, so this serves as its first promo, and its release coincides with the launch of Dylan’s The Complete Album Collection Volume 1, a boxed set of 35 studio titles.

The video, which can be watched here, is set up like a mini TV screen, with users invited to flick through the channels using their computer’s up and down keys. The shows featured are littered with stars of US reality TV or gameshows – Drew Carey from The Price Is Right is up there, alongside Jonathan and Drew Scott of Property Brothers and the characters from Pawn Stars on the History Channel. The twist is that while they all look like they are taking part in their normal shows, they are in fact mouthing along to the lyrics of Like A Rolling Stone, not matter how incongruous the setting. The trailer below gives you a hint of how it looks:

The video features 16 different channels, so the experience of watching it varies with every viewing. The charm of the project lies both in the surprising appearances by the TV stars and in its seamless production, with viewers able to shift between the channels with none of the usual buffering or slowness that can often hamper the experience of playing with interactive videos. The video is directed by Vania Heymann and is hosted by Interlude, a new patented technology platform; in many ways it serves as a showcase for the platform’s capabilities.

Interlude partnered with Pulse Films and Walter Pictures to create the films, and the plan is to keep adding to the content so that the video continues to change over the coming weeks. To play with the full video, go to bobdylan.com.

Multi Basket Playground

magRush 2013, part 2

Starting from midday today on magCulture, Jeremy Leslie will be reviewing one magazine an hour – for 24 hours. It’s 2013’s second instalment of #magRush…

As Leslie wrote on magCulture earlier today, “magRush lets us give a shout to the many magazines that might otherwise get overlooked and also draws attention to the volume of magazines being made.

“As I mentioned during [my] talk in Berlin recently, there are so many new magazines that might have been considered for The Modern Magazine book had they been around when I was researching it. The magRush selection will be a mix of those new launches and new issues of existing magazines.”

So keep an eye on magCulture.com/blog today and tomorrow for an hourly fix of great magazines.

Corten steel office facade by Möhn + Bouman

This office building in the Netherlands was designed for property developers called Orangerock, so architects Möhn + Bouman gave it a faceted orange facade made from sheets of Corten steel (+ slideshow).

Located in the town of Emmen, the building forms part of a site that Orangerock plans to develop in the next ten years. The client asked Dutch architects Möhn + Bouman to convert an abandoned house into a short-term office until then.

“The temporary character of the design allowed us to refrain from renovation and adapting,” said the architects. “Instead we designed a Corten steel screen that masks the old building.”

The new Corten steel facade wraps around the front and sides of the former house, completely hiding the original architecture behind an asymmetric volume with a large tinted-glass shopfront.

Strips of lighting sit within narrow recesses in the walls, intended by the architects to look like raindrops. Gutters are hidden behind the facade, while one section has been cut away to avoid colliding with a group of large rocks.

“The abstraction of the material and details emphasises the folded geometry,” added the architects.

The interior of the house was cleaned but most spaces were left intact, apart from a series of recent extensions that have been removed.

Here’s a project description from Möhn Bouman Architects:

Steel Screen, Emmen, Netherlands

The project is situated in a former rural town that grew over the last decades into a medium-sized regional city. As a result of this process large parts of the city are transforming gradually towards a more urban character. The client is an innovative project developer, keen to play an active role in this process. Recently they acquired a piece of land close to the city centre for future redevelopment. On the site some old buildings with a rural character can still be found. Once the redevelopment takes place, expected within ten years, these buildings will be demolished. Until that moment the developer decided to use one of them, an old house, as his office.

The challenge was to design an intervention to turn the house in a more representative office. The temporary character of the design allowed us to refrain from renovation and adapting. Instead we designed a Corten steel screen that masks the old building. Corten steel rapidly develops an equal layer of rust which protects it from further decay.

As a start the building was stripped of more recent extensions and cleaned. Precise measurements were then taken and translated into a 3D drawing, providing the basis for the design. The measurements included some large rocks that were found on the site, residues of the ice age, placed at a corner of the house.

Based on the resulting 3D files the steel of the screen was completely computer-cut, allowing a sophisticated detailing. In the roof small strips of blue light were introduced, like raindrops, and the name of the client was cut out of the steel. To blend with the rusted steel a special glass laminate was developed, combining coated glass and color layers. The abstraction of the material and details are emphasising the folded geometry, which in turn reacts on the shape of the house. To prevent staining the glass, rusty water from the roof is guided to a hidden gutter. The gutter ends above a massive rock, gradually turning into an Orange Rock over the years.

Battery Expansion

We have seen some really creative solutions and approach towards battery design. Add to the list this TransX, which is a battery module made with recycled card and copper. The beauty of the design is that it can transform a AAA battery into a larger battery.

Since many differently sized batteries all use a nominal voltage of 1.5V, we can try our hand at one design that fits them all.

Here is how it works:

  • The battery and its casing can be used in appliances, with the copper ends conducting electricity.
  • The module series has been designed in combination with packaging that also holds a manual and a rechargeable AAA battery.
  • The module is pre-cut and can be easily removed from the packaging and folded.

Steps:

  • Choose the size you need and fold the Trans X to fix the battery.
  • Put the battery with Trans X into the battery Holder.

TransX is a 2013 red dot award: design concept winner.

For The Love Of Tea

Man and his perfect cuppa tea are often inseparable. The innate art of brewing tea and with a specific blend is almost like a traditional ritual in some cultures. Keeping with this essence we have here the O’cha, a mini tea-infuser that gives you an opportunity to make their tea on the go. According to Somi, the driving factor for the design and the size was to make the infuser fit comfortably into a standard bottle. Thus making it easily adaptable and portable.

Lambos for Your Legs

Upon seeing Lamborghini’s wild Veneno concept, experienced shoe designer Jeremiah Obuobi felt compelled to design a shoe that embodied the same design language. The result is this wicked-looking runner that, like the Lambo, is focused on optimum aerodynamics and stability to achieve a equally dynamic experience when the wearer tackles the road on foot rather than by car.

e-Blast From the Past

This twist on the e-bike travels back in time to 1865, the year BASF was founded. This was also the time when the wooden “Dandy Horse” invented by Karl Drais was given its first pedals, and as velocipede launched the bicycle on the road to global success. As a tribute to this era of technology and invention, BASF and the DING3000 design studio have developed a velocipede with today’s state-of-the-art technology – including 24 high-performance plastics, specialty foams, epoxy resin and polyurethane materials from BASF.
