Brand New IDEO: San Francisco Bay Build to Think, Dive Into Abstraction, and Embrace the Infinite Grid

BrandNewIDEO-SF-3.jpg

On Monday, IDEO Bay storytellers (San Francisco and Palo Alto) gathered in the San Francisco studio, bracketed by palm trees and sunshine.

We began by exploring the Global Make-a-Thon inspiration from our colleagues around the globe. We also looked to the science and math underpinning our logo for inspiration. IDEO Chicago designer Sara Frisk, whose first job was at Pentagram under Michael Bierut, flagged the geometry underneath the IDEO logo and showed us the IDEO logo laid out via X’s and Y’s. Kismet, anyone?

BrandNewIDEO-SF-1.jpg

We broke up into teams for three short design charrettes. At the end of each charrette, we shared concepts with the larger group and then shuffled teams for the next session, building on the previous session’s ideas.

Three early concepts here in the Bay Area:

1.) The Logonator/Configurator: How might we platform the logo to create a human-centered identity configuration tool that showcases the full spectrum of we are and what we do, from micro to macro, from playful to serious? We were inspired by Issey Miyake’s playful video, and the Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum’s curation by color.

BrandNewIDEO-SF-4.jpg

2.) The Dialogue Between Context/Content: We are inspired by local context, from Japanese cherry blossoms to Australian aboriginal installations of local materials. How might we adapt for context? How do we make something feel inevitable, yet also customizable/personal?

3.) The Listening Logo: Are we there to absorb and learn? Are we there to present a point of view? The logo is a symbol of our modes of interaction. How might it shift accordingly? A business card is a souvenir of a personal interaction. How might we invite people to interact with us in a compelling way?

BrandNewIDEO-SF-2.jpg

Check out IDEO San Francisco + Palo Alto’s concepts (under #sfbay) on our Six Themes Tumblr site, and stay tuned for a comprehensive synthesis of the ideas generated during IDEO’s 24-Hour ‘Brand New IDEO‘ Make-a-Thon!

Brand New IDEO centers on a 24-hour global Make-a-Thon taking place on Monday, March 25th in IDEO’s eleven offices around the world, starting in Tokyo and ending in San Francisco.

Ubi de Feo Figures Out How to Teach Coding to Code-Challenged Designers

ubidefeo.jpg

“Creative technologist” Ubi de Feo is part of Hello Savants!, an Amsterdam-based creative collective. In recent years he’s been teaching—or trying to teach—Arduino coding to creatives, but ran into the following barrier: “For the beginner, the artist, the industrial designer who wants to start prototyping, [the difficulties of learning to code] can appear as walls they constantly have to crash against,” de Feo observed. “If you ask them why, most of the times the answer will be something along the lines of ‘I’m a creative person, this structured stuff is not for me.'”

Realizing that the traditional approach to teaching coding was not working for this type of student, de Feo created a new coding workshop called “From 0 to C,” starting with a rather radical step: Removing all of the computers from the classroom. Instead, he introduced physical objects the students are meant to interact with.

There will be no code, no editor, no screen. The tools to become a programmer are paper, pens, tape, candy, ping-pong balls, wooden boxes, cups and other common objects.

…The whole class moves through several stages of interaction with the teacher, in which they execute simple tasks [with the objects] and are able to document them. In a few hours the class is (unwillingly) turned into the human representation of a program. This program becomes more and more complex, but because the whole class is involved, it is simple for the single student.

While these mechanisms are implemented more concepts are learned, and digested slowly, with breaks and more games involving boxes and ping-pong balls, the way we “count” using them, challenging each other to represent quantities in optimized ways. When the machine is running, all that we have is sketched out and if the system works, it’s time to write it down. From that point on it’s just a matter of teaching you the simple syntax of a language (it could be C, Processing, ActionScript, JavaScript. it won’t matter).

At this point the student has a clearer vision of what he/she has to deal with, and when the logic is clear, the techniques and the virtuosism that will be implemented over the years are just the result of getting better at it, and the scope of this primer is not teaching you to be the best C/Processing/Flash/Arduino/MSP coder/hacker, but one who knows what he/she is dealing with and has a better attitude towards problem solving.

This sounds like a fascinating way to teach abstract concepts, one that even a computer dummy like me could potentially pick up, and I’m eager to try it out. If you’re in the same boat, we just may get our chance, eventually. Though he considers “From 0 to C” as still in the pilot phase, De Feo launched the workshop last year in Amsterdam, was subsequently invited to hold one in Italy, and is currently fielding offers to bring it to other parts of Europe as well as America. For updates, watch this space.

Fiona Strickland’s wonderful egg illustrations

To illustrate its new How To Boil An Egg book by chef Rose Carrarini of Rose Bakery, publisher Phaidon – and the book’s designer Studio Frith – turned not to a food photographer or illustrator but to award-winning botanical artist Fiona Strickland

The hardback, 136 page book (cover shown above) features 39 illustrations by Strickland in total, all created meticulously in watercolour to an incredible, almost photographic level of detail.

So where did the idea to commission a botanical artist come from? “There was a beautiful show of botanical prints at the Victoria and Albert Museum a couple of years ago at which the seed was sown,” the book’s designer Frith Kerr of Studio Frith tells us.

“After the success of her Breakfast Lunch Tea book, Rose Carrarini was keen to try something other than photography,” Kerr explains, “so we did exhaustive research with Phaidon to find a botanical illustrator to work with.”

But, Kerr tells us, finding a botanical illustrator to work with wasn’t an easy task, given that they would be tasking an artist to step outside their comfort zone. “In the end we made a short list of botantical illustrators whose work we liked and asked them each to paint an egg, in what we referred to as The Egg Test,” says Kerr. “Fiona’s egg stood out for its intense detailing and precision.”

An egg, we’d imagine here at CR would be mere child’s play compared to some of the illustrations produced by Strickland for the book. Take, for example, this stunning illustration of a Pumpkin Cake:

Perhaps surprisingly, given the quality of the illustrations in the book, these images represent Strickland’s very first foray into food illustration, and when she was commissioned, it was the prospect of having her work published in a book that was, the artist told CR, one of the persuading factors that made her take on the project.

“I do like to work from life although with botanical art and the transience of subjects sometimes I have also to rely on photographic images to support my drawings,” Strickland explained to us when we asked about the processes involved creating these images. “In this case a photographer travelled to Paris with editors from Phaidon to take photographs of the recipes which they then forwarded to me,” she says.

“In drawing and painting the images I had to resize the images and make colour swatches to match the photographs. Each photograph took sometime to draw and then paint, some taking over three weeks.”

“Watercolour can be a difficult medium to handle,” adds Strickland, “and to recreate some of the textures and colours of the food took sometime to build up to as close to a photograph as possible, I like to work with only the very transparent group of watercolours slowly building layers of tone and colour and this can be time consuming although giving beautiful results.”

How To Boil An Egg by Rose Carrarini is published by Phaidon at £22.95.

The Staples ARC notebook system

Several weeks ago, we were contacted by Staples about running a series of sponsored posts on their office products. Because Staples sells so many different products in their stores, we agreed, provided the arrangement would allow us to be free to review products we already use and have no hesitation recommending to our readers. Since both David and I purchased, have been using, and have even been recommending the Staples’ Arc Notebook system, we thought we would start there. So, the following is a sponsored post from Staples about a product we believe in. These sponsored posts will be infrequent, and they will help us continue to provide quality content to our audience.

I’m a notebook junkie. I can’t resist buying them. Even as the guy with an iPhone and an iPad, I still love writing on paper. There’s a pocket-sized notebook in my pocket at all times and I keep a larger notebook on my desk. For years I’ve used Moleskines, but in February I purchased an Arc Notebook from Staples and I’m in love. It’s highly customizable, folds neatly in half, lays flat when open, looks great, and suits my needs wonderfully.

The Arc is similar to the Circa notebook system by Levenger, but much less expensive. (A basic leather Circa notebook for 5.5″ x 8.5″ paper is $80, and the same size basic leather Arc is $15.) It consists of various styles of paper (lined notebook, calendar, to-do, project manager, and more), pocket and divider inserts, and covers in poly, fabric, and leather that are bound together by a series of discs. The notebook also is available in two sizes — one for 8.5″ x 11″ paper and one for 5.5″ x 8.5″. An optional hole puncher lets you add your own papers to the system. In short, you can create a custom notebook with exactly the information and pages you want in exactly the amount and even order that you want. The line also includes adhesive notes, sheet protectors, page flags, business card holders, a built-in pen holder, and other accessories.

The pages are cut so that you can slide them on and off of the disks easily, yet they remain securely intact while in place. There are so many options available, that each setup will be unique. With that in mind, here’s how I’ve set up my Arc.

Setup

The very first item in my Arc is the adhesive flags. I resisted using these for a long time, as I disliked the way they protruded from the edge of whatever they happened to be stuck to. However, I’ve grown to love them. Today I use them for quick reference to something that doesn’t warrant a whole tab divided separator.

Next is a flowchart that describes the basic of the Getting Things Done system I download from DIY Planner. It’s a super, at-a-glance reference that reminds me of the GTD process.

After that, I’ve got five pages I’ve printed from my calendar, Monday through Friday. I print one day at a time, so I can remove each as that day passes.

Several copies of David Seah’s Emergent Task Planner come next. This document has been one of my favorite tools for years. I use it to list the priority tasks I’ll complete in a given day, record how long each task takes, record what I’m doing from hour to hour and capture ideas, tasks and more that need processing at the end of the day. It’s invaluable. You can print the Emergent Task Planner from David’s site, or order a pre-printed pad from Amazon.

Next is a plastic tabbed divider. I’ve added a label marked “Notes” with my labeler. The divider precedes about 60 notebook-style pages. These are the heavy pages that came with my basic Arc and I use them for scribbling all manner of information.

Those are followed by another tabbed divider labeled “Projects” and half a dozen Task Project Trackers, again from David Seah. I use these to identify an open project, all the steps that are required before I can mark that project as “Done,” time how long each step takes and finally scribble related notes. I also could have purchased the project manager pages from Staples, which are similar, just not what I have been accustom to using.

And, that’s it. The hole puncher is an added expense ($40) but worth it if you want the benefits of creating your own custom setup.

Delete My Schedule

Really love this simple Delete Clock, offering us an innovative way of planning our day and keeping with schedules. The whiteboard surface is good for jotting down notes and tasks, plus the fact that the schedule gets erased when the clock hand sweeps the face, is very poetic indeed.
