Frost by Front for Stelton
Posted in: glassware, Product news, Stockholm 2013Stockholm 2013: Swedish studio Front has designed a collection of glassware with frosted bottoms for Danish brand Stelton.
Inspired by ice forming on the outside of a window, Front has created an ice bucket, two glasses and a carafe with a rounded cork stopper.
The simple vessels have curved translucent bases that gradate into clear glass halfway up.
We’ve previously featured a coffee pot designed by Paul Smith for Stelton‘s 50th anniversary.
Other stories from Stockholm Design Week include blown-glass sculptures that look like trees and an installation of glass objects and robotic arms.

Cambridge Cat Clinic by Gort Scott
Posted in: cats, Gort Scott, renovations, slideshows, VetsHackney studio Gort Scott subtly added the outline of a cat’s ears to the facade of this feline veterinary clinic outside Cambridge (+ slideshow).
The architects wanted to create references to cats in the design, but agreed with the client that these details would be subtle. “After years of designing with human situations in mind, it was quite interesting also designing with cats in mind,” Jay Gort told Dezeen.
The building occupies a former joinery shed in the village of Fulbourn. Gort Scott covered the original facade with cedar slats and picked out the shape of the cat’s ears using wider sections.
“The screen was considered the most elegant and cost effective way of giving the building a more welcoming, joyful appearance in a context of fairly run-down sheds,” said Gort.
The building’s interior is reorganised, creating a large reception and waiting area at the front of the clinic. The reception desk is built from plywood and features ornate feet shaped like cat’s paws.
Beyond the reception are a series of consulting rooms, an operating theatre and a diagnostic laboratory, plus a large preparation room lit from above by skylights.
Interior walls are painted in calming shades of turquoise, with occasional details picked out in yellow.
Gort Scott is led by architects Jay Gort and Fiona Scott, whose past projects include a rugged stone house on the Isle of Man. Jay Gort also spoke at Dezeen’s Designed in Hackney Day last year, where he argued that the beleaguered British high street is actually a thriving location of “collision and conflict”.
Another veterinary clinic completed recently is a combined surgery and home in Japan.
Photography is by Angus Leadley Brown.
Here’s some more information from Gort Scott:
Cambridge Cat Clinic
The site for this new, cat-specialist veterinary practice was originally a joinery workshop, opposite an open field at the edge of Cambridge. Our client was a veterinarian establishing a new business.
Gort Scott obtained planning permission for change of use and remodelling of the existing building to also include a new cedar wood screen on the front elevation, with a suggestion of cats ears. Beyond this screen is a generous reception and waiting area with specially-designed furniture, and views back to the open field.
The main working area for the medical staff is a large multi-functioning ‘prep room’, which is top-lit by two generous skylights.
The scheme’s design includes many aspects that respond to the client’s considered approach to the welfare of her animal patients and their owners.
The building serves both as a general practice specialising in feline medicine, and also as a surgery, with a full operating theatre, lab and diagnostic area.

Author Douglas Coupland designs furniture range
Posted in: Do not show on the Homepage, Douglas Coupland, SwitzerCultCreativeNews: Generation X author Douglas Coupland has followed fellow celebrities Vanilla Ice, Brad Pitt and Pharrell Williams and designed a range of furniture, unveiling a collection of Japanese-inspired pieces.
Canadian novelist and artist Coupland has come up with a desk, chair, lamp and bookcase for SwitzerCultCreative, a design brand launched by brother and sister Allan and Renee Switzer.
Coupland’s efforts come just a few days after rapper Vanilla Ice unveiled a lighting collection. In November actor Brad Pitt unveiled a range of limited-edition furniture. Hip hop star Pharrell Williams has also dabbled with furniture design while in 2007 astronaut Buzz Aldrin designed a moon-shaped light for Habitat.
Coupland’s collection includes the Bento Box Escritoire, a black writing desk, and Paint Box Escritoire, a white writing desk with colourful storage pockets. The Writer’s Seat fits beneath the desks and is available in five colours.
The Ryoan-ji floor and desk lamps are inspired by a chequer pattern seen by Coupland in a Kyoto temple and are made with wire frames wrapped in translucent material.
The Osaka bookshelf can be arranged in different configurations and is named after similar shelves seen by Coupland that survived the 1995 Osaka earthquake.
“The collection is a reflection of everything I use daily,” says Coupland. “These are pieces that will unleash creativity, dopamine, high style and timelessness into their user’s world.”
Here’s some information from SwitzerCultCreative:
Douglas Coupland Designs Luxury Furniture Line For SwitzerCultCreative
Prominent writer and visual artist Douglas Coupland is launching a collection of furniture designs, in collaboration with Vancouver-based SwitzerCultCreative, a brother-sister luxury design collective. The Douglas Coupland for SwitzerCultCreative collection is being unveiled on January 24th at Toronto’s Interior Design Show (IDS 13) taking place from January 24th to January 27th at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.
“The ‘Douglas Coupland for SwitzerCultCreative’ collection is a reflection of everything I use daily,” says Coupland. “These are pieces that will unleash creativity, dopamine, high style and timelessness into their user’s world.”
Douglas Coupland for SwitzerCultCreative consists of a desk, chair, lamp and bookshelves.
The Desk: The Bento Box Escritoire and the special edition Paint Box Escritoire are two variations on a personal theme from Coupland. His fascination with an escritoire, rather than a run-of-the-mill desk, inspires thought, broadens his mind and because of the nature of the escritoire – a vessel for writing alone – encourages the thought process and makes him want to write more.
The Writer’s Seat: Available in five different colours, the seat fits perfectly beneath either escritoire. “When I went to art school in Hokkaido, I had to study several Japanese art forms — ikebana, rock arranging, calligraphy and sumi-e painting,” says Coupland. “I think everybody should study these things. It makes you reframe the way you see the world. These seats are unexpectedly ergonomic and work whether you’re doing ink work, or blogging on a MacBook Pro.”
Ryoan-ji Lamps: These lamps take strong influences from Japanese culture, specifically a checker pattern seen by Coupland in Kyoto’s Ryoan-ji Temple in 1986. A floor lamp and a desk lamp have shades made with wire frames wrapped with a translucent shoji-type material.
Osaka Bookshelves: These sleek, stacking bookshelves will provide a luxurious home for any book collection. Simple in style, the Osaka bookshelves are so named after Coupland saw similar shelving that survived the 1995 Osaka earthquake. They have been designed to encase paperbacks, hardcover and oversize books. Says Coupland: “They’re simple, smart, strong, and can be arranged in any number of configurations like Legos. They also have caps and kicks available should you want to change proportions.”
The Douglas Coupland for SwitzerCultCreative collection is only available through SwitzerCultCreative, who hold the exclusive worldwide license to market and supply the range.

Cape by Nendo for Offecct
Posted in: Offecct, Product news, Stockholm 2013Stockholm 2013: these bent wood chairs by Japanese studio Nendo flick out at the back as if they’re wearing capes.
Nendo designed the Cape chairs for Swedish design brand Offecct and each one comprises two pieces of bent wood on a lightweight steel frame. They are available in white, black and natural wood.
Earlier this week we reported on the studio’s mountain range of white foamboard at the entrance to Stockholm Furniture Fair, where Nendo is guest of honour.
Also in Stockholm this week, Nendo unveiled an installation of 30 different lamps created from modular parts for Swedish lighting brand Wästberg – see all products from Stockholm Design Week.
Other designs by Nendo we’ve published recently include bowls so thin they quiver in the wind and glassware made from Coca-Cola bottles. See more design by Nendo.

Here’s some more information from Offecct:
Offecct proudly presents the elegant chair Cape, the first addition to the collection by one of the greatest names on the contemporary design scene: the Japanese designer Nendo/Oki Sato. Cape is designed by Nendo, who is also the Guest of Honour at the Stockholm Furniture Fair 2013 as well as the Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan 2012.
Cape is a complex chair with an exciting look, with ultra-thin dimensions and a very low weight, made possible by a collaboration between Offecct and Swedish Steel AB in the development of new steel materials. The development behind Cape has taken place within the Offecct Lab, a comprehensive strategic initiative which aims to concentrate Offecct’s efforts in the development of new solutions and new products.
Nendo draws inspiration from everyday life. He describes his products as functional, simple and friendly. Every day we encounter small wow-moments – or as Nendo expresses them, “!” moments – that are easily forgotten. With his design Nendo wishes to capture these interesting moments, collect them and reformulate them into something that is easy to understand.
Cape is an elegant chair that gives the illusion of a cape spread over a frame. The subtle twist in the design of Cape makes the chair stand out all the while being obvious and simple in its design language. Simply “ ! ”.
Offecct always works with authentic materials in its production. The tasteful seat of Cape is molded in wood produced from controlled sources and the stand is made of an extremely light material which gives the chair its elegant shape.
“Offecct has a long history of cooperating with some of the world’s most prominent designers,” says Kurt Tingdal, CEO, Offecct. “That is why it is both natural and pleasing that we can present the chair Cape; a first, and in our opinion excellent, result of the cooperation with Nendo,” Kurt Tingdal concludes.
