Dezeen Music Project: Microcosmos by Histibe

Kiev-based producer Histibe has sent us this dark drum and bass track called Microcosmos. The track starts off in an eerie, slightly muted fashion before a truly ferocious beat kicks in around one minute in.

Dezeen Music Project: Empyreal by 800xL

Newport producer 800xL has got a new track out called Empyreal. It’s full of pulsating synths, glitchy drums and odd snatches of echoey vocal samples.

Dezeen Music Project: Dumb by Sivu

UK singer-songwriter Sivu has recorded a reworking of the Nirvana classic Dumb, from the band’s In Utero album. True to form, he’s replaced Kurt Cobain’s ragged guitar-playing with a sombre synthesiser drone, which provides a platform for his typically floaty vocal harmonies.

Dezeen Music Project: 10 Forward by Just Ben

London producer Just Ben has sent us his latest track, a fantastically chilled-out and soulful dance track. In fact, 10 Forward might be even smoother and more funky than Love Sensation, the last track Just Ben sent us. That’s no mean feat.

Dezeen Music Project exclusive: binaural mix of Woven Ancestry by Max Cooper

To mark the release of his debut album Human, which came out last week, techno producer Max Cooper has exclusively shared a binaural mix with us, which features the new album’s lead track Woven Ancestry.

Binaural recordings create a 3D sound experience: music seems to come from multiple different directions, as if you were sitting in the room with the musicians. The effect only works if you’re listening with headphones, though. So put on a pair of cans, close your eyes, and immerse yourself in the music!

Cooper recorded the mix, which also features the tracks Meadows and Gravity Well, as part of his 4DSOUND performance in Amsterdam last year. You can watch a video of Cooper explaining the project here.

University of Westminster appoints FAT founder Sean Griffiths as Professor of Architecture

Sean Griffiths

News: following the announcement last month that London architecture studio FAT is to disband this year, founding member Sean Griffiths has been appointed professor of Architecture at the University of Westminster.

Griffiths is an alumnus of the University of Westminster and has recently held posts there as a teacher and researcher at the Department of Architecture.

“In my new role I want to highlight alternative forms of practice, exemplified by firms such as FAT, which emerged from the University of Westminster, as well as draw attention to the huge variety of activities in fields such as fine art, journalism, property development, social activism and arts consultancy that a number of prominent former students currently undertake,” said Griffiths. “This is particularly important in light of the ongoing debate about the value of architectural education.”

“I’m particularly pleased that the Professorship is at the University of Westminster, which was the springboard for the formation of FAT and has been a fantastic workshop for ideas that have found their way into my practice work, a process that will no doubt continue,” he added.

Alongside his position at University of Westminster, Griffiths will continue his current work as an architect, designer, artist, writer and teacher.

The appointment follows the news that London studio FAT, which Griffiths co-founded in 1995 with Charles Holland and Sam Jacob, will close down this summer.

Renowned for its playful, postmodern approach to architecture, FAT announced in December that it would disband following the completion of two major projects – the curation of the British Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale 2014 and a fairytale house it designed in collaboration with artist Grayson Perry for the Living Architecture series of holiday homes.

Theis and Khan to design new RIBA headquarters

News: British architects Theis and Khan have been selected to design the new headquarters for the Royal Institute of British Architects at 76 Portland Place in London.

Located a couple of doors down from the RIBA‘s existing base at 66 Portland Place, the current Institute of Physics building will be completely renovated to create enough office space to bring all the architecture institute’s London staff under one roof.

Construction is scheduled to begin in March 2014 and expected to complete by the end of the year, freeing up space in the existing premises for new exhibition and events spaces that will include a gallery of architecture designed by London studio Carmody Groarke.

Patrick Theis and Soraya Khan saw off competition from five other shortlisted firms to win the project.

“We look forward to delivering a high quality sustainable design that both meets the RIBA’s aspirations for its new building and reflects the integrity of 66 Portland Place,” they said. “We were intrigued by the potential synergies between the two buildings and look forward to developing these further with the RIBA.”

The architects were selected following a panel interview with a group of RIBA members and will deliver the project alongside engineers Max Fordham and Price & Myers.

“The selection panel was greatly impressed by all the shortlisted teams’ initial thoughts, approach to the project and their experience and ability to deliver within a constrained timeframe,” said RIBA president Stephen Hodder.

“Theis and Khan gave an exceptionally considered approach and clearly demonstrated how they aim to meet our aspirations. We were particularly inspired by the team’s consideration of the relationship between our new premises and our main RIBA headquarters building, and how they had successfully delivered projects with such synergies in the past,” he added.

The RIBA has taken a 43-year lease on 76 Portland Place.

Dezeen Music Project: 45 by Atom Tree

This month Glasgow band Atom Tree released their debut EP Tide Of Thorns, which opens with the track Die for Your Love that we featured on Dezeen Music Project last year.

45 is a brooding electronica track in a similar vein, which Atom Tree have made available to download for free as a nice taster of what you can expect to find on the EP itself.

Dezeen Music Project: Family Music by Y’Skid

Here’s another track by Eindhoven-based hip hop producer Y’Skid. Family Music is a bit jazzier than the previous track we featured by Y’Skid, but has still got a great hip hop groove.

We liked the track so much we used it on the soundtrack to our first Dezeen and MINI World Tour movie from Eindhoven with Miriam van der Lubbe.
