CES 2013: A Note to Exhibit Designers: Here’s How to Make Your Display Stand Out (If You’ve Got the Bucks!)

audi-booth-01.jpg

For exhibit designers, it’s tough to cut across the visual clutter clogging the floor at monster events like CES. Eventgoers’ peripheral vision is basically rendered useless, as colors, shapes, text, and screens all scream for their attention.

However, whatever firm Audi hired to handle their exhibit design found an effective way to stand out. They erected a large rectilinear tunnel, paneled entirely with white plexi covering what appear to be daylight-rated bulbs. After all the visual junk you’ve waded through to get there, Audi’s area looks so clean, so pure and so awesome that your feet automatically start taking you towards this visual oasis.

Inside there were no adornments, signage, built-ins or displays; just a few letters on the floor denoting the two cars they were showing off, the RS5 and R-18 E-Tron Quattro racecar.

I realize not everyone’s got the scratch to pull this off, nor has just two objects they’re trying to display, but this was the one exhibit design out of the entire scrum that really had a remarkable design.

Medical Practice in Ramsau by Hammerschmid Pachl Seebacher Architekten

This doctor’s surgery in the Austrian Alps by Graz-based architects Hammerschmid Pachl Seebacher was inspired by small wooden hay barns that dot the local landscape (+ slideshow).

The medical practice by Hammerschmid Pachl Seebacher Architekten is located in the remote village of Ramsau, known for its cross-country skiing and ski jumping.

“The building’s shape and the materiality is reminiscent of the typical historical hay barns of the Ennstal area,” explained the architects.

The facade is vertically clad with roughly sawn, untreated spruce.

Spruce was chosen “because it turns grey very consistently on all sides of the building,” architect Dietmar Hammerschmid told Dezeen.

Inside the building are three treatment rooms, a waiting room and a pharmacy.

The architects used larch to build the benches in the waiting room and the counter in the pharmacy.

“Larch has a lot of branches in the texture, so it has a very rough look,” said Hammerschmid.

The walls behind the benches are covered in grey loden, a thick wool fabric traditional to the Austrian alps.

We’ve featured a couple of other buildings by the same architects – a distillery with an asymmetrical timber roof and a renovated stone chapel with skeletons in the basement.

Other projects in Austria we’ve published on Dezeen include a cocktail bar in Vienna with a ceiling inspired by mountains and a concert hall with a dramatically angular roof – see all our Austrian buildings.

CES 2013: Retro Music Players Galore

Fighting the sleek, modern Bluetooth-speaker-aesthetic here at CES are a few companies going the retro route. For starters, Sylvania’s got a model that looks like a traveling salesman’s record player (above) and another that looks like a cross between a suitcase and a Cadillac (below).

The ABC of Architects by Andrea Stinga and Federico Gonzalez

This animation by architect Andrea Stinga and graphic designer Federico Gonzalez depicts the best-known buildings of 26 famous architects, one for each letter of the alphabet.

The ABC of Architects

Starting with Alvar Aalto’s Säynätsalo Town Hall, The ABC of Architects flashes through an assortment of colourful cartoon buildings that includes Frank Gehry’s Guggenheim Bilbao and Le Corbusier’s Villa Savoye, before finishing up with Zaha Hadid’s Pierres Vives.

The ABC of Architects

“This work is an alphabetical list of the most important architects with their best known building,” explain the producers.”A lot of them have been left out with grief because we only need one for each letter and it’s been an effort to have different nationalities.”
