Carl Burdick’s Bluetooth Headset Concept

0kburdick01.jpg

Designer Carl Burdick’s amusing bluetooth headset takes the technology-as-jewelry trend, smashes it into the Retro Objects movement with an old-school telephone form factor, and adds a dash of ’80s Executive Desk.

0kburdick02.jpg

It’s just a concept from the Los Angeles-based Burdick, but assuming the technological innards could be worked out, we could see this being Kickstarted in a big way.

Natural Speakers by Joon&Jung

Natural Speakers by Joon&Jung

Korean designers Joon&Jung have hand-crafted this set of speakers by strapping punctuated ceramic cubes onto a stack of twigs.

The combination of materials gives a slight echo to create a more natural sound.

Natural resonance porcelain speaker

The idea for the ‘the natural speaker’ derived from the desire to create an absolutely unique, handcrafted speaker for the interior space. Whereas a lot of speakers are constructed to produce a rather fat bass and sharp high tones, we felt the sound was kind of stuck inside the speakers, missing a natural vibe and ambiance.

Natural Speakers by Joon&Jung

During the development of the ‘the natural speaker’ we discovered the great properties of porcelain as a speaker casing, providing a clear resonance and mellow sound.

Natural Speakers by Joon&Jung

Amplified inside the ceramic and wood transmission construction, the sound gains a slight echo, creating a natural feeling of resonance, resembling the distinct flair of an acoustic instrument right in front of you.

Natural Speakers by Joon&Jung

Each set of pieces is individually crafted by hand and each procelain casing checked for best amplifying performance. If you value a balanced midtone sound and a speaker with a ‘feeling’ for your music, you will surely enjoy the ‘the natural speaker’.

Tipoteca Italiana

NY Design Week 2011: Beetle-Infested Table by Hooker & Co.

While most furniture designers carefully avoid beetle-infested wood in their salvaging quests, Jesse Hooker embraces it with open arms.

“>hooker1.jpg

This weekend, Brooklyn-based Hooker & Co. debuted their STAGG table at the Bklyn Designs booth at ICFF. Fabricated from salvaged steel for the metal base and tapered legs, and reclaimed barn maple for the main slab, the table comes in five reclaimed wood types and four lengths. The STAGG table is their first departure from exclusively making one-off pieces, which is a definite challenge when using reclaimed materials. While their work is not all insect-infested, this particular piece has dark swathes of beetle-made patterning, and is the direct product of envisioning something beautiful in something previously considered “damaged.”

Someone’s explosive identity for Resonate

Someone’s new identity for PR agency Resonate was made using £1000 worth of flowers, liquid nitrogen and explosives

We’ve seen (and enjoyed) quite a few super slo-mo videos of things being blown up here at CR over the past few years (Dan Tobin Smith’s Exploding Teddy story for Kilimanjaro being a highlight). And there are plenty more on YouTube. But Someone‘s new identity for PR agency Resonate puts the idea to appropriate use, the idea being that the agency takes one story and disseminates it in hundreds of different ways (although presumably not destroying something beautiful in the process…).

Working with photography group Sorted and effects specialist Pirate, Someone froze bouquets of flowers using liquid nitrogen then detonated them with explosive charges.

For the technically minded among you, the stills were captured on a Canon 1DS mk 3 using a bank of Bron Colour High speed strobe packs. They were all wired to a trigger that fired the explosives first, and then the camera and strobes at a few thousandths of a second later.

The images are shown here on business cards (front and back)

and on the website

Video was also shot (at 2000 frames per second).
