The literary t-shirt label launches a line for kids and new designs

oop-moby1.jpg oop-pride1.jpg

Turning classic book covers into inspirational t-shirts, Out of Print recently added a kids line to its collection of “intelligent” literary fashions. Tykes can don soon-to-be-favorite reads like “The Catcher In The Rye,” “Moby Dick,” “Pride and Prejudice” or “Brave New World” with their distressed, 100% cotton tees.

Out of Print also launched its first collection of Originals—a series of re-imagined graphics designed to inspire young adults to read classics like “The Great Gatsby,” “The Outsiders,” “Animal Farm” and “To Kill a Mockingbird.” Designed by Ohio native and Philadelphia-based designer Mikey Burton for a graduate thesis project, the illustrations reflect his penchant for ’70s rock ‘n’ roll posters (past projects include gig graphics for Wilco, Spoon and Joanna Newson), as well as his talent for visualizing each story’s essence.

Burton explains, “The whole reasoning behind my project was simply to get young adults interested in reading. I was never a big reader myself and it was something I regret every day of my life. Maybe if I thought reading was cool when I was a kid, I would have done it more. Also, in a time where people are doing less reading, I think it’s more important now than ever to make reading seem more appealing.”

For every shirt (or now, sweatshirt) Out of Print sells, they give one book to Books For Africa. October 2010 saw the altruistic label send a 40-foot sea container of 560 boxes with over 20,000 books of donated text and library books to schools and libraries in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

Kids tees sell online from Out of Print for $22, with mens and womens designs available for $28 each tee and $38 for sweatshirts.

The Empowerment Plan: Veronika Scott’s Winter Coat for Detroit

empowerment-lead.jpg

Veronika Scott, a junior at the College for Creative Studides in Detroit, Michigan, has embarked on a quest to help over 32,000 homeless Detroiters by providing them with something basic, but much needed: a winter coat. The problem of the immense number of homeless is exacerbated by the lack of funding for proper shelters, leaving half of them out in the cold. As Scott points out, “for those who have no home, their coat is also their shelter,” so rather than just clothe those in need, she’s developed a hybrid shelter and garment—the coat turns into a sleeping bag, using body heat captured during the day to provide extra warmth at night.

The Element S coat is made from Tyvek and wool, simple enough to be made by first time sewers, and, in fact, designed to be. Scott hopes the production of these coats will teach people new skills, help them find employment, and inspire a sense of pride.

Tuesday Night: Erin Rose Gardner at Core77’s Hand-Eye Curiosity Club PDX

NOV0210_01_large.gif NOV0210_02_large.gif

Join us Tuesday night with Erin Rose Gardner as she presents Jewelry as Subject. Erin is an Oregon Arts Commission grant recipient and an experienced explorer of the terrain between design and craft. As she puts it; “Undulating between these two fields, my research centers around mass-produced jewelry, because it has the capacity to serve as a cultural symbol for sentiment as-well-as commodity. As a designer/maker I am suspicious of industrially produced objects that embody emotional significance.”

The presentation begins at 5:30PM at Core77’s Hand-Eye Supply – 23 NW 4th Avenue, Portland, Ore. Drop on by or come back and watch here via our live stream!

RSVP at info@handeyesupply.com

Service Design Network Conference: Monica Bueno’s Lessons from the Cloud

SDC-bueno1.jpg

Guest post by Tiffany Chu, Continuum.

After lunch, we settled back into our seats for a talk titled “Digital Service Design: Lessons from the Cloud.” It was not, in fact, another rehash of cloud computing, but instead a specific point of view on the nuances of service design within the digital realm, presented by Monica Bueno, a principal at Continuum.

The first lesson Bueno proposed was to rethink the role of staff—a surprising, not-entirely-intuitive perspective for the digital domain. She offered the example of TD Bank, who has ramped up their deployment of digital banking tools in order to free up their staff to be much more customer service-oriented and do what humans do best. She also mentioned the latest Zappos commercials, whose ironic humor highlights relationship-building between staff and consumers—an external ad campaign which is actually underlined on the inside with incentive programs for longer call times and ensuring every employee is trained in the call center.

This Just Inbox: Studio Ve’s Clever Bookshelves Reposition Convention

Shay Carmon and Ben Klinger, of Israel-based Studio Ve, have designed a new series of clever shelves that preserve the material convention of wooden planks and steel bookends while proposing new shelving arrangements.

For example, the Eli Shelf, pictured first, stands on end, for “the pile of standby books, always waiting to be returned to the shelf.” The Newton shelf, pictured second, holds a special, favorite book within the plank, “defying gravity.”
