365 days in balance

Mother New York’s latest project will see a new film released every day for a year to promote New Balance trainers

Via the New Balance 365 website, the dedicated NB fan (and we know that accounts for quite a few graphic designers and ad creatives) can watch a new 20 second film each day for 365 days. Each of the films is on the theme of ‘balance’ and was shot by Swedish director Jesper Koothoofd.

Koothoofd shot the first 88 films in just eight days in Stockholm earlier this year. “The Mother team and New Balance came to our Stockholm studio and together, we hand-built each of the 88 set designs and various props with laser-cutters, vinyl-cutters, wood working machines, spray paint and sewing machines,” he says. “We painted the entire studio grey so that we could shoot in all directions and with three camera and multiple sets, we managed to shoot about eight films a day with a combination of time-lapse, stop motion, high-speed and traditional shooting techniques.”

If you can’t be bothered to check the website every morning, the films are also available via an iPhone App which can also act as an alarm clock, awakening you each day with a film attempting (albeit with some charm) to sell you a pair of trainers – personally, I prefer the radio, but each to their own…

Fashion Jewelry: Catwalk and Couture

fashion-jewl-cover.jpg fashion-jewl-1.jpg

An in-depth exploration of jewelry design, “Fashion Jewelry: Catwalk and Couture” focuses on the designers and their working methods for creating distinct accessories for fashion shows and personal collections alike.

Author Maia Adams—a contributing writer for publications such as Vogue, Elle and Wallpaper—highlights 33 designers in all. Each gets their own chapter packed with an informative biography, insightful quotes, and a photo spread of their jewelry and sketches. While the styles and materials run the gamut, Adams chose each highly-skilled designer for their particular impact on the fashion industry and overall influence on 21st century fashion.

From the oft-bizarre ornate pendants by Yoshiko Creation Paris (pictured top right) to the equally subversive sculptural pieces by Florian (pictured above), each accessory’s look is as intriguing as the process for its design.

fash-jewl-brilli.jpg fash-jewl-jank.jpg

Designer Natalia Brilli (above left) provides a fuller understanding of the effort that goes into her leather-wrapped necklaces. Taking at times two days to create, the Belgian works hard not only on each piece but on developing the full story, often leading to limited-edition jewelry that entertains both when worn and when on display at home. Also reinterpreting the classics, Australian designer Michelle Jank (above right) explains her dream client would be the Queen of England, for whom she would make “seriously big, elaborate diamond rings.”

fash-jewl-filmer1.jpg fash-jewl-filmer2.jpg

Fully defining jewelry envisioned for the runway, designer Naomi Filmer works between art and jewelry to create showstopping multi-dimensional pieces that expose her highly conceptual thought process. From gold-plated shoulder pieces (above left) to her hand manipulation piece (above right), Filmer regards jewelry as “an extension of our identity.”

fash-jewl-yazbukey.jpg

“Kooky, kitsch and prettily punk” well describes Yazbukey, a collaboration between two sisters using bright colors and unconventional shapes. With a rigorous process of research and an impressive history working with designers Christian Lacroix and Givenchy, Yazbukey creates well-crafted pieces that exude a carefree attitude. Previously highlighted on CH, their works include cartoon shapes of items like hot dogs, telephones, Jackie O and the Jetsons.

Due out next month, sign up online to be alerted about availability.

Burrill at fashion week

Since admiring his show at Colette last year, London-based fashion designer Jenny Packham has taken a bit of a shine to the work of graphic designer and image maker Anthony Burrill – who she commissioned to design the set and invite to her London Fashion Week show, Alive, earlier this week…

As well as working on the invite (above) and the catwalk set, Burrill got his musician friends, Acid Washed, involved too. “They came over from Paris,” Burrill tells us, “and played a special 15-minute long piece during the show which they’d worked on with Jenny specially. They sent over a few rough mixes to us in London, we listened to them and gave some feedback and direction and it all just fell into place really.”

We posted this video Burrill did with Acid Washed for their track, Snake, just last week – but here it is again in case you missed it. The graphics-inspired vid was created by Anthony Burrill, Jack Featherstone and Paul Plowman through production company Recordmakers.

In fact, this week’s catwalk show isn’t the first time Burrill has collaborated with Jenny Packham – he first worked with her on her show, Pretty Girl No. 1, last September (view images on Burrill’s Flickr page) and has since also worked on a window display for her London store. Nor is it the last time: Burrill tells us that he and Packham are talking about collaborating on graphics to be printed onto fabrics for use in one of her future collections. Watch this space…
