Hiroshi Sugimoto: Theaters—Movies in a single frame

I’m a habitual self-interlocutor. Around the time I started photographing at the Natural History Museum, one evening I had a near-hallucinatory vision. The question-and-answer session that led up to this vision went something like this: Suppose you shoot a whole movie in a single frame? And the answer: You get a shining screen. Immediately I sprang into action, experimenting toward realizing this vision. Dressed up as a tourist, I walked into a cheap cinema in the East Village with a large-format camera. As soon as the movie started, I fixed the shutter at a wide-open aperture, and two hours later when the movie finished, I clicked the shutter closed. That evening, I developed the film, and the vision exploded behind my eyes.

A Salute To Desert Boots

imageDo you ever think you’ve discovered an up and coming trend, only to then see it everywhere? That’s what I’ve been encountering with desert boots! Desert boots can be seen as 2010’s answer to the 2009’s oxfords. The menswear-inspired boot adds a rugged look to any outfit. You might be familiar with the original Clarks desert boot, designed in 1949 by Nathan Clark. The simple, durable boots were worn by British Army soldiers in Egypt during World War II, and gained popularity with the mods of the 1960s . Today, desert books are worn by the likes of Sarah Jessica Parker, and lend a laid back look to outfits. Wear them with jeans or a flirty dress when the weather heats up for an unexpectedly sophisticated touch. Typically found in neutral shades of khaki, brown, and taupe, one of my favorite picks is the Bronx women’s “Double Take” desert boot, which comes in bright red and sky blue! Josh Owen’s Cube Jigger

0BA08-kik.jpg

Philadelphia University ID prof Josh Owen’s Cube Jigger is a clever piece of multiple volumetric analyses embodied in an aluminum cube, for the purpose of pouring drinks.

The Cube Jigger design evolved out of an experiment to combine the most common liquid measurements for mixing alcoholic drinks into the smallest possible dispenser. The form of the Cube Jigger was inspired by traditional box-shaped Japanese sake cups.

Working Test of Michael Arads Sept. 11th Memorial Unveiled

1220wtcmemorial.jpg

Back in 2007, we told you that Michael Arad‘s September 11th Memorial, “Reflecting Absence,” had been pushed back several years. Instead of opening in late-2009, it was set to open hopefully sometime before the 10th anniversary of the attack. The rebuilding of the World Trade Center site has been plagued with delays from the very start (in that same post, we said that Daniel Libeskind‘s Freedom Tower was expected to open some time in 2010, but that’s been pushed to around 2013 now). However, it looks like there’s been some positive movement recently on Arad’s project. A small test model of the waterfall memorial has been built out in Brooklyn and was unveiled to reporters late last week (the BBC has some great video). The moving sculpture looks promising (and it actually works) and the plans are still supposedly on schedule, with building commencing soon at the WTC site, finished by spring of next year, and hopefully all running smoothly by September 2011.

“One of the things I wanted the water and the design to do is to mark this continuous sense of absence,” Arad said. “These voids, even though water falls into them…they never fill up, they always remain empty, and that was very important to me,” he added.

The waterfall-filled pools are the centerpiece of a memorial plaza that will take up half of the 16-acre site at ground zero. The pools will be surrounded by hundreds of sweetgum and white oak trees on a cobblestoned plaza; a memorial museum is being built below ground that will open about a year after the memorial.

Use your mac as a television

Large computer displays have become so affordable in recent years that many people who enjoy watching televised programming can now get by without owning a dedicated television set. This option can be particularly beneficial for those who live in smaller apartments or dorms.

Unfortunately, not all programming is available on Hulu or Netflix. If you want to watch over-the-air HDTV broadcasts on your computer, then you will need some kind of hardware TV tuner and an HDTV antenna. If you just want to watch analog or Clear QAM cable broadcasts, you won’t need the antenna, but you’ll need cable service.

We’ve tried a few tuners that have been sent to us for review over the last few months, and the one we like the most is the elgato EyeTV Hybrid for the Mac.

elgato's EyeTV Hybrid

The hardware is very compact. The entire unit is roughly the size of a Zippo lighter. It connects to your Mac via USB. The other end has a coax connection for your antenna or cable — nothing out of the ordinary. The bundled EyeTV software, however, is the real reason we chose this unit as our top pick. The interface is well organized and makes it very easy to view and search television listings, change channels, and record programs. It also allows you to rewind, pause, and fast forward live television (with the included infrared remote).

If you like keeping all your media files in one place, the EyeTV software will even allow you to export your recorded content directly to iTunes, so you can sync it with your iPod or iPhone.

So if you have limited space and you don’t want to deal with having a dedicated television and DVR, or if you would just like seamless integration between your DVR and your iTunes library, then you should definitely consider the elgato EyeTV Hybrid.
