Eunsuk Hur Fabrics

Laser cutting, acid printing and etching fabric, Eunsuk Hur‘s ethereal, multi-layered creations are already making a name for themselves in fashion and interior design. Moving abroad from South Korea to London to further her studies, Hur graduated earlier this year from the renowned Central Saint Martins School for Art and Design.

Intrigued by the way plants and animals respond to their environments as they grow, Hur’s designs themselves adapt and change depending on how they’re worn. She expressly designs each interchangeable system of textile pieces to engage the customer and expand their opportunity for personal expression while still maintaining Hur’s original design concept. The outcome of her deeply considered garments are irresistibly touchable, textured pieces for wearing or using as a home furnishing.

In an effort to convey emotion in her work, the interchangeable pieces are only one way Hur plans to execute her concept. In the future Hur plans to execute her style using varying mediums and processes, her methods shifting as fluidly as her designs.

All products are made by personal commission, see her website for more details.

Shoe Of The Week: Rosegold “Halle” Suede Stud Booties

imageI won’t lie — I’ve been known to kick-start the party on more than one previously-empty dance floor. And of course, I’m always down to incorporate some kind of eye-catching shine into my wardrobe, whether it’s in the form of sequins, studs, or a statement necklace. I would say that it’s this inner Beyonce in me that makes me attracted to these embellished booties, but realistically I think just about any fashionable gal could pull these off, whether or not you’re in love with the limelight. The Rosegold “Halle” Suede Stud Booties come in both black and gray suede — perfect for holiday parties and New Years’ festivities — and have the perfect amount of light-reflecting shimmer with its adjustable fold-over cuff without looking over-the-top biker babe or hardcore rocker chick like other stud-happy styles. If you’re looking for a shiny new pair of booties for the end-of-year, these are edgy yet wearable enough to carry you through the season and not just till the 2010 ball drops!

What: the Rosegold “Halle” Suede Stud Cuff Booties
Price: $295
Where to Buy: Bloomingdale’s
Who: xgalexy was the first to add the Rosegold “Halle” Suede Stud Cuff Booties to the Hive.

World Press Photo Contest Adds New Rules to Help Fight Altered Entries

1202wppcontest.jpg

An interesting find by Photo District News about the World Press Photo Contest, which just yesterday opened up their mailbox for entries for the 2010 edition. The organization has set new rules in place demanding that any photo entered must not be altered in any way, with retouching only acceptable when doing so “conforms to currently accepted standards in the industry.” Furthermore, they’ve stated that they can request original copies, straight out of the camera, if there any questions of authenticity arise when judging an image. Should seem like something that would have been in place a while ago, given how prevalent Photoshop and other image editors have been in widespread use for, say, the past decade. PDN agrees, but also has another question about this new rule:

It’s good to see WPP addressing this issue, since it makes the contest fairer. Now, the hard part: What does “currently accepted standards” mean? World Press Photo managing director Michiel Munneke says the wording of the new rule reflects the “need for flexibility.” It will be interesting to see how often — if ever — the jury determines it needs to examine original files.

Unitasker Wednesday: USB Pet Rock

All Unitasker Wednesday posts are jokes — we don’t want you to buy these items, we want you to laugh at their ridiculousness. Enjoy!

The wonderful people at ThinkGeek.com have brought us what can only be described as THE most amazing unitasker ever found. Not only does it waste energy and use up one of your USB ports, but it also does absolutely nothing! The USB Pet Rock:

This unitasker (or should we say non-tasker?) is pure genius. The best part of it all might even be the catalog text promoting the item:

Simply plug the USB cable into a free port and let the fun begin. The USB Pet Rock will instantly begin to work its magic. People will stop by and ask you what your USB Pet Rock does. Each time, you can make up a new story; for no matter what you say, it will be greater than the truth – because these USB Pet Rocks don’t do a dang thing. Except make you smile. And confuse your friends and coworkers, which will make you smile even more. So, get your USB Pet Rock today, and help make us rich tomorrow.

It actually says that it doesn’t do “a dang thing” and is only to help make the company “rich.” Oh, I am insanely curious to know how many of these ThinkGeek has already sold.

This Just Inbox: Mist-o’s bird-related furniture designs

misto-comp.jpg

Mist-o is a new-ish design partnership between Tommaso Nani + Noa Ikeuchi based in Milan, Italy. So far they have been producing lighting and furniture that seems to be based loosely on the gestures of birds, including the Nest lamp and Flamingo bookcase shown above.

Nest is made by bending a perforated steel sheet around a bulb, creating a simultaneously closed and open space. The perforations act as a screen, obscuring the bulb while also allowing light to filter through. Equally simple, the elements of the awkward-in-a-good-way Flamingo bookcase support one another through gravity. The acrylic shelves and lime tree dowels fit together just so, and as more is added, the more stable it gets.

We love the illustrations for each of these projects. They remind us a little of the drawings of Achille Castiglioni’s projects commissioned from Matteo Guarnaccia by Paola Antonelli. For example, here’s Flamingo:

Finally, Mist-o is also be up to some new, non-bird-related work, like Fachiro, a stainless steel dish suspended on a mass of pin-shaped legs.
