Odessa Finds a Titian (Maybe) and the Met Finds Velazquez Over and Over Again

1203foundart.jpg

So we continue on an upbeat note, we can tell you that things are also doing okay in both Odessa and in New York. At the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the new exhibition “Velazquez Rediscovered” has just opened. Although small in size, says the NY TimesKaren Rosenberg, the displayed collection tells an interesting, multi-decade story of battling over its very authenticity and trying to establish just who the subjects are in these possibly real, possibly fake Velazquezs. In Odessa, this sort of confusion has just begun. In perhaps a move to get Kim Cattrall to one day disrobe for them, the Museum of Western and Eastern Art has just announced the discovery that one of the pieces in their collection was painted by Titian, making it incredibly treasured (and extremely valuable). The AP reports that the find was discovered by officials at the Hermitage after “an analysis of chemical samples and X-rays.” Though this pleasant surprise hasn’t left everyone applauding, even from the Hermitage itself. Art historians are demanding that only they can tell whether it’s a true Titian or not:

“The analysis shows that the canvas matches Titian’s historical period, that the paint used matches his paint, that certain technical attributes match up,” [Sergei Androsov] told The Associated Press. “But based on that it is impossible to judge whether the painting is a Titian. That is the work of art historians, not technical experts.”

Either way, we think that both stories prove that you probably have a Picasso in your attic right now, hidden behind those snow boots you’re never going to wear anymore.

Museum at FIT Symposium to Celebrate Fashion, American Style

malandrino dress.jpgOne of our favorite conferences of the year is almost here, a few months earlier than usual. The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology’s eighth annual symposium is devoted to American style, a nod to the museum’s current exhibition, “American Beauty: Aesthetics and Innovation in Fashion,” on view through April 10 in New York City. The symposium will focus on fashion of the Americas and tackle themes ranging from the diversity of the American fashion industry to the unique characteristics of New York fashion. The fun begins tomorrow, December 4, with talks by “American Beauty” curator Patricia Mears, historian Kohle Yohannan (who will contrast small town girl Claire McCardell with femme fatale Valentina), and designers Maria Cornejo and Christian Cota. Saturday’s program will delve into America’s sartorially distinct subcultures, from hip-hop and cowboy couture to the modern-day preppy revival, which writer and New York Times columnist David Colman will address in a talk entitled “Prep-posterous.” The big finish? Designer Yeohlee Teng in conversation with scholar Susan Sidlauskas. Pre-registration for the symposium has closed, but the museum assures us that on-site registration is available (admission is $100 for both days and the event is free to all students). Ready for an in-depth look at style from sea to shining sea? More information and a full symposium schedule is available here.

fabrica-exquisiteclock3.jpg

Fabrica will present the “Exquisite Clock” as part of their exhibition Decode: Digital Design Sensations to be presented at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London from December 8th, 2009 through April 10, 2010.

Fabrica is inviting you to take part in this exhibition by uploading all of your number photos to exquisiteclock.org. All images uploaded to the website between now and the close of the exhibition will be used.

See the web version of the clock here— it’s also available as a screensaver or iPhone app.

Study Design and Typography in Italy with SVA

svamaster09rome.jpg

The School of Visual Arts in New York City is offering a masters workshop on design, history, theory and practice in Venice and Rome, geared especially towards professionals. The workshop will start on May 30th in Venice and moves to Rome on June 6th for the last six days. If you’re a practicing designer looking to take an enriching vacation, this would be it.

Here’s the pitch:

Spend two weeks studying visual communication–especially typography–in Venice and Rome, the birthplace of Western typographic tradition. Study with the best typographers in Italy. Visit the Trajan Column, the Pantheon and the Arch of Titus. Examine inscriptions on Roman buildings and monuments that have long been a typographic ideal. Our workshop in design history, theory and practice is an intensive period of study that enables students to research and analyze the roots of typography, draw type and letters from the classic models while practicing contemporary design with Italian and American designers and design historians.

Applications are due on March 15th, but don’t delay! Read more here.

Santiago Calatravas Dallas Bridge Gets An Okay, Even If It Results in Widespread Destruction

0929calbridge.jpg

While things might be lousy right now in Paris, things are much more sunny out in Dallas. Santiago Calatrava, who we told you back in September was having trouble with yet another bridge, has finally gotten the approval to go ahead with the first portion of his Trinity River project. The Army Corps of Engineers, who had originally stopped the plans, has now given the okay, with one provision: that the levees in the area need to first be repaired. While city officials are happy that things can now move forward, other Dallasians (what do they call themselves?) aren’t so sure. Case in point is this editorial in the Dallas Observer by Jim Schutze, who sees this forward momentum as the first step in a Katrina/New Orleans-like disaster, leading to dangerous floods and lawyers made extra wealthy should they follow Schutze’s advice and get in on the ground floor of this possibly city-killing flood. Being as we’re not from the area, we don’t know nearly as much about the bridge/levees as this op-ed writer, but we feel like maybe he missed something even more important than the dangers of water-blocking: Santiago Calatrava’s bridge curse. Beware, Dallasians!

TheFind Keeps It Hot In Cozy Couture!

imageYou’ve probably noticed that sweater dresses are everywhere at the moment, and most of them are pretty short – perfect for this season’s over-the-knee boots, especially with a pair of cute tights. If you want a great selection of sweater dresses in multiple styles, check out the what we have to offer – that’s where I got this V-necked grey sweater dress, which is very comfortable and flattering to boot – and many other styles, colors and designs, too! I love this trend, but I think you have to be careful with it if you’re the kind of person who usually gets warm indoors and wants to take off your sweater. Last thing you want is to be sitting there sweating in the office all day. Or even a looser, more flowing style would help you stay cooler. If it’s long enough, you can also lose the leggings or tights. However you style it, this is one trend you’ll be able to get a lot of mileage out of!
