Disruptive By Design

wiredbiz.jpg

In June this year, WIRED organised its first ever business conference – Disruptive By Design, in New York City. This exclusive, invite-only event featured top industry leaders — including Shai Agassi, Chris Anderson, Jeff Bezos, Jeff Immelt (yes, all males!) — on how to think different about change, and how to use it to our advantage.

Now the conference papers are available online.

CollegeCandy’s 8 Stylish Steals Under $20 At Express!

imageSo, Express isn’t cheap. That is pretty obvious when you walk in and the hot shirt your eyeing for your birthday party is marked at $49. But every few months, they have a major sale. And I mean major. The kind that makes you giddy and happy and willing to sift through giant over-stuffed racks because the deals are just that good. You see, Express marks their stuff down to really low prices and then gives you an additional 20% off of that! That is some serious saving on a lot of really cute stuff. It’s a frugal fashionista’s dream. And that dream is coming true right now. I sifted through the (digital) racks for you and pulled 8 of my favorite pieces. They’re all under $20, so you can stock your closet without that annoying guilt getting in the way. I especially love these metallic ballet flats and this pleated square-back tank! Click over to CollegeCandy for the rest of the bargain highlights!

Marc Ecko Forced to Sell Control of His Label

1030iconeck.jpg

What do the brands London Fog and Mossimo have to do with fashion mogul Marc Ecko? After this week, they’ve become one in the same. Or rather, all under one big umbrella, as the designer, known for his love of spending lavishly, has been forced to sell off the majority stake in his company to the Iconix Brand Group. This comes after more than a year of Ecko struggling to pay creditors, laying off staff, and trying to sell off portions of his holding to stay afloat, which most are attributing to both the economic crash of the past couple of years and the designer’s history of writing more checks than he probably should have been. Here’s from the NY Post, which announced the news with the headline “Ecko Slam-Dunked“:

“I’ve had a crazy, wild ride. I’ve done a lot of things that have been naive,” Ecko told The Post. “I’ll take my lumps for a lot of things that, in retrospect, were a little indulgent. Life happens. I don’t regret any of it.”

The designer will be staying on as the company’s top creative officer, but will no longer have complete control in guiding the company. Yet despite what Ecko’s new owner’s CEO may be saying about revenue and earnings being way up, Iconix itself hasn’t been having the best week either, following the company’s release of its reportedly disappointing 2010 financial forecast.

Dom Pérignon Œnothèque Bol Sein

bol_sein_lagarfeld_domperignon.jpg

Inspired by a 1787 bol seine (roughly translated as bosom bowl) that artist Jean-Jacques Lagrenée reportedly modeled after Marie-Antoinette’s breast, Karl Lagerfeld’s 2008 version for Dom Pérignon updates the original with a shape taken from Claudia Schiffer, his muse for the ongoing brand collaboration. Also known as a jatte téton, the queen used hers at the Rambouillet château and—as the legend goes—drank Hautvillers (i.e. Dom) champagne from it, making it the first coupe.

Lagerfeld’s plinth of stylized bottles and sleeker, more angular lines lend a more modern look, while his stark white color plays on the 18th-century version’s homage to the pale complexion as a female beauty ideal. Denied U.S. release due to legalities having to do with relating alcohol to sex, rumor has it the sculptural vessel comes with a bottle of 1995 œnotheèque and has a €2,500 pricetag—if you can find one of the 1,000 editions made.

Discovered while on a recent trip to Versailles as the guest of Dom Pérignon to check out an exhibit devoted to Louis XIV and his tastes, we also learned that Lagerfeld knows the height of all the kings.
