Art Institute Picks Their Collections Most Frightening Pieces

1030artscary.jpg

As a lame adult now too old to go out to raucous parties, but young enough not to have kids yet, this writer’s connection to Halloween has sadly become distanced. As such, he hasn’t really been on the lookout for much spooky, seasonally-appropriate pieces to share with you here. Fortunately, our pals over at Chicago’s iconic Art Institute have come through at the eleventh hour for us with their recent post to their Facebook page:

In honor of Halloween, we took an office poll: what’s the scariest/creepiest/spookiest work in the collection? Here are some of our picks.

Therein you’ll find ten decidedly scary pieces, like Francis Bacon‘s Figure with Mean (6 out of 10 on the creepy scale), Irving Penn‘s famous The Angel photograph (3 out of 10), and for those with a decidedly popular phobia, Bruce Nauman‘s video installation Clown Torture (8 of 10, regardless if you previously had a fear or not). A thanks to the Art Institute for bringing the high brow to a purposefully low brow holiday. We applaud whoever decided this would be a fun idea, because it most certainly is.

Video Style Steal: Alicia Keys Is Sad But Sultry In “Doesn’t Mean Anything”

imageAlicia Keys has quite a lot of success under her belt for a woman at 28 (but then again, what else would you expect from a girl who was accepted into Columbia when she was 16?), with her shelf full of Grammy awards and four chart-topping studio albums. Aside from her musical growth (and ascending movie career), we’ve also seen quite a progression in her hairdo — from neat braids to unruly curls and now sleek and straight in her latest video, “Doesn’t Mean Anything.” But her hair isn’t the only thing that’s polished and chic. In a sparkly tunic, Alicia is classy as usual, and while she may be mournful and lonely in the video, I know I’d be much more cheerful if I had a hot pair of stiletto boots like hers! Check the slideshow to see some Alicia-inspired looks from her latest hit vid.

Eduardo Paolozzi: The Jet Age Compendium

Ambit issue 40, 1969

On until Sunday at the Raven Row gallery in east London is a marvellous show dedicated to the work of the late Eduardo Paolozzi…

Paolozzi, who died in 2005 aged 81, is well known as being behind some of the earliest examples of Pop Art to come out of the UK. His 1947 work, I Was a Rich Man’s Plaything, which was first shown in 1952, was a collaged piece that, notably, featured the word “pop” in the work itself.

But Paolozzi also worked extensively on pieces for the art and literature magazine, Ambit, and much of the work on show at Raven Row is made up his output for the title.

Brought in by the magazine’s then prose editor JG Ballard in 1967, Paolozzi used the pages of Ambit to create striking collages and visual essays, pieces that often showed a more political side to his creative work. His work in Ambit tackled subjects such as the Vietnam war and the rise of mass advertising.

It’s well worth a visit before the show closes – as gallery spaces go, Raven Row is a particular CR favourite – and in addition to the examples from Ambit, the exhibition has several of Paolozzi’s bronze works, prints and scrapbooks, and even some space age toys that he collected.

Four Corners Books, who are also based in the same building as Raven Row, recently published a facsimile edition of Paolozzi’s Ambit works, The Jet Age Compendium: Paolozzi At Ambit.

A dream comes true…

Robertaflack

…tonight I will see her … listen to her voice … her magic music … I can’t even begin to express myself of what this means to me! Her music is magic… my favorite …will she sing it for us tonight?

A long time ago I told my husband when we were watching her live concert dvd at home that I could only dream of going to a concert of her and just by coincidence my husband saw a billboard yesterday about tonights concert. Can you believe there were still tickets left…???

It’s a beautiful day today.

Core77 Photo Gallery: Dutch Design Week 2009

ddw09-gallery.jpg

This October, Eindhoven presented the 8th edition of Dutch Design Week, the largest design event in the Netherlands. Around 1500 designers from home and abroad showed their work in more than 60 locations all over the city, representing the full array of design disciplines. In typical Dutch style, visitors were given insight into the entire development process from concept to product in various disciplines ranging from industrial design to applied arts. We had a good look around – so here is our massive gallery, showing a selection of exhibits from the Eindhoven Design Academy graduation show, the Designhuis, the former Philips complex Strijp-S, and various other shows in galleries all over the city. So, lean back and enjoy the show from the comfort of your desktop.

glassbaby-multi-1.jpg

With gently shifting colors, the 70 different glass vessels that make up the Glassybaby collection set the mood for any occasion—whether used as a cup, vase or candle holder. The line includes opaque and translucent versions that range from bright, saturated hues to more serene tones, each constructed using a multi-layered glassblowing process that makes for a thick, sturdy structure and lines of color that gorgeously evoke a sunset. Founder Lee Rhodes, or one of 30 team members, blows each one in their Seattle studio.

For those in NYC, the handmade vessels now also light up a West Village boutique, Glassybaby’s new second home as of several days ago (the first is in Seattle). Their stores maintain the same conscientious ethos that lies at the heart of the Glassybaby brand: to live in harmony with the earth and goodwill for all. From “bag cleansing” to donating a portion of sales to various cancer research and support organizations, their efforts shine as brightly as their votives.
