Ice House Detroit Freezes the Abandoned

1028frozen.jpg

Just this past weekend, a friend was talking about Roger Hiorns‘ Turner Prize-shortlisted piece “Seizure.” If you aren’t familiar with it, the quick synopsis is that Hiorns dumped gallons and gallons of copper sulphate into a sealed, abandoned apartment, waited a few days, sucked all the liquid back out, and what was left were these beautiful, blue walls of crystals. So it’s funny that piece should come up right before we’d heard about this project in Detroit starting to make the rounds here on the internet, which sort of sounds like the American version of “Seizure.” It’s Gregory Holm and Matthew Radune‘s plan to pump water into an abandoned house this winter and let it freeze, essentially creating a gigantic ice block around the structure. Throughout the process, Holm will be photographing the effects the ice has on the house, with the whole purpose of the project serving as a statement about Detroit’s foreclosure plague over these past decades. The two are currently raising money for the project on their blog, so if you’re feeling generous and dig the idea, drop them a few bucks.

Destroy All Monsters exhibition

Destroy All Monsters is the name of Juju’s Delivery‘s (aka Barcelona-based German illustrator Julia Schonlau) solo show currently running at Rojo‘s exhibition space in Barcelona. Schonlau cites films Ivan’s Childhood and The Village of The Damned, artists Henry Darger and Marcel Dzama and books Where The Wild Things Are and Lord of The Flies as influences for the work in the show – which features uniformed children camping in the woods, seemingly stalked by a menagerie of monsters. But, with their red ray-emitting eyes, it’s not the children who you feel worried for…

We create monsters to materialise our nebulous feeling of angst,” says Schonlau in explanation of the show. “And to control our fear we chasten our negative emotions and fight the monsters. But it is a fight which cannot be won – because as long as you fight something then you acknowledge its very existence.

“In early horror films the monsters are menacing but tragic at heart,” she continues. “They are outsiders, outcasts, loners… feared and hunted by the human race. At the same time they are destructive and full of vengeance. Like juvenile delinquents they are at war with themselves and the rest of the world, causing chaos in their wake. In contrast the children here in uniform are model citizens, obedient and well adjusted. They believe in the concept of right and wrong – something which they have been taught. But their childish eagerness to please and lack of knowledge has been misguided. They have been raised as an army to kill the trauma that possesses their society… to slay the world’s monsters unquestioningly.”

Here is a selection of images of the exhibition space and of some of the works in the show:

Destroy All Monsters by Juju’s Delivery runs until November 3 at Rojo Artspace, Carrer Girona 61, Local 02, Eixample. 08009 Barcelona, Spain. Tel. +34 934 673 598

The ebb and flow of Paris traffic

As part of its new evening series of Friday Lates, the London Transport Museum is staging Sounds of the Suburbs on 6 November. The multi-sensory event, curated by D-Fuse, will also screen a new short by design studio, FL@33, called 8min20sec. It’s just been uploaded to our Feed section…

The short film – uploaded to Feed, here – is part of an ongoing project by London-based FL@33, the design studio founded by Agathe Jacquillat and Tomi Vollauschek.

The DV footage was recorded in Paris, they explain, “at the Place Charles de Gaulle (aka Place de l’Étoile) from the top of the Arc de Triomphe. It offers a bird’s-eye view to the exceptionally busy roundabout below, in which the Arc stands.”

The haunting soundtrack accompanying the hypnotic, looping film – which kicks in after about a minute and a half – was composed and performed especially for the video piece by the Mercury Quartet. (More information on the project can be found on the FL@33 site, here, which also includes a series of prints).

8min20sec (2009) will be screened in HD on Friday 6 November at London’s Transport Museum as part of the Sounds of the Suburbs late night opening.

More info on the event and how to get tickets at the LTM website. Sounds of the Suburbs features performances from D-Fuse, Labmeta, *Spark and Electrovision and live illustration from Andy Morgan.

Ellerbe Becket Gets Bought Out by AECOM Technology Corp.

1028beckaec.jpg

Some big architecture business news this week. It’s been announced that the Kansas City-based firm Ellerbe Becket, has been acquired by the massive California company AECOM Technology Corp. Becket, you might recall, has come to more prominence recently for seemingly being Populous‘ only rival in the stadium building game, most recently getting handed the high-profile commission to design the New Jersey Nets Arena at Atlantic Yards after Frank Gehry got booted. The sale will apparently be good for both sides, with Becket, who will be keeping its name, having a much larger financial backing behind it, and AECOM buying a presence in the Midwest. Here’s a bit:

“One of the big-picture issues now is the global marketplace,” [managing principal Steve Duethman] said. “We have to figure out the best way to serve that marketplace and be a player in it. Joining AECOM allows us to do that.”

For instance, Duethman said, in the sports and health care design fields, which are among the Kansas City office’s strengths, the merger will allow Ellerbe Becket to expand into geographic markets that it previously didn’t have the financial resources to enter.

Menswear-Inspired Trousers Are Sexy For Fall ’09

imageWhile I love all the options that women’s fashion brings, sometimes I wish it was just a little bit easier. On those cold and dark mornings I am so jealous of the guys who can just wake up and throw on some nice pressed trousers and crisp shirt and look sharp. Good thing menswear trousers are super chic for fall ’09, and these aren’t your basic work pants either. Keep your cuffed, wide-leg, crease-front pants in rotation, they’re perfect work basics but pants are going way beyond the basic this fall. To take the menswear pants from day to night, try experimenting with some luxe fabrics and fashion-forward shapes, like the cropped tapered trouser, one of fall’s hot silhouettes. They’re loose around the hips but skim the calf and show a little sexy skin at the ankle. No matter which way you go, please ladies, don’t steal them directly from the boys department. It’s all about the fit here, and men’s pants are cut to fit all our of lovely lady lumps. Check out the SLIDESHOW to see some sexy menswear-inspired trousers that will have the boys lining up behind you.

Get Hope to Cope

Not content with helping get Gordon Brown and other world leaders to the UN Climate Change Conference with its Rise Up Twitterstorm in September, Bristol-based BeThatChange (BTC), the ‘open source’ pressure group, has now set its sights even higher. With its new Get Hope to Cope campaign, it aims to get Twitter’s highest profile user, @BarackObama, no stranger to the power of social media himself, to also attend.

BTC is an organisation made up of a small team of creative freelancers and volunteers, mainly from the design and advertising industry. Its Identity and distinctive illustrations have been created by Mike Cannings, who also worked on the website with fellow designer Paul Mills (Good Morning Please) and developer Derek Ahmedzai (NC10, Monkey Mountain).

Ray Morrow, who volunteers with BTC, says, “When you’ve only a couple of seconds to catch eyes and imaginations, design really matters. That’s why we’ve applied everything we’ve learned in advertising to the campaigning arena – we hope that by creating a visually appealing model that lets people campaign in a click, even the most disengaged will get involved and make change happen.”

The campaign has the support of many eminent Tweeters, including @StephenFry, and also charities and NGOs such as Greenpeace, Oxfam, TckTckTck and PlaneStupid.

The hashtags being used for the campaign are #Hope2Cope and #Cop15 and you can add your weight by registering at bethatchange.com
