Make History gathers 9/11 stories over streetviews

Make_History_NS11MM_Press_02_Harry_Zernike_Washington.jpg

The National 9/11 Memorial & Museum has launched Make History, “a world-wide initiative to gather any and every 9/11 story in an effort to understand history from the perspective of those who witnessed it. Using the website, visitors can search, group and sequence any number of histories, photos or experiences, creating custom sequences by time, geography or theme. Each photo is overlaid on a current street-view image of the present day, creating a ‘double exposure’ of past and present.”

The site was created by Local Projects. Visit 911history.org to submit photos, stories, and video.

New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2010: Michael Angel

imageAussie designer Michael Angel kicked off the Spring/Summer 2010 shows at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week with a parade of party dresses that provided a feast of color and exotic patterns for its audience. Known for his unique bright prints and innovative cut designs, the designer did not disappoint this season, despite the fact that his signature rainbow leggings were nowhere to be found. Accessorized with flat wrap sandals and bold stone earrings, the models romped the runway in flowing silk wrap dresses and cap-sleeved minis, clearly designed only for those aiming to show off a killer pair of long legs. One particular highlight included a patent leather jacket and silk floral miniskirt combo, reflective of the designer’s playful yet feminine take on modern womenswear. Check the slideshow for some highlights straight from the runway!

Portfolio of the Week: Marcos Madia

Portfolio of the Week goes to Marcos Madia, a Buenos Aires-based designer with an excellent knack for coming up with fresh forms for commonplace objects.

First up, check out his Ruby Chair, a decidedly different and rather arachnid take on the chaise longue:

Last week we showed you an Indian sitting style chair. Madia’s take on cultural furniture is a “Latin Sofa,” designed with Angela Martin Martin, that tilts backwards for a quick siesta:

His clever Party Dish is the perfect flatware for standing-room-only parties where you’d still like a bottle of vino to go with your chow:

And last but not least, Madia’s wicked, two-man-operated Aero portable windpower harnessing device pulls juice out of the air.

How Did You Spend Fashions Night Out?

AA at BG.jpg
(All Photos: UnBeige)

FNO BGzp.jpgHow did some of our favorite creative people spend Fashion’s Night Out, the retail-themed holiday formerly known as Georges Bataille‘s birthday? We hit the streets of New York last night to find out. A few of the highlights:

  • The “interdisciplinary creativity team” that is Andrew Andrew (pictured above) DJ’ed the night away at Bergdorf Goodman, where they took to their MacBook-fueled turntables amidst the Goyard sacs de voyage. The duo proclaimed the event “totally bonkers,” in a good way.

  • Meanwhile, elsewhere at Bergdorf’s, we admired Zac Posen‘s handpainted dresses (at right), in which we detected the sprit of Sam Francis, and then lovingly fondled pretty much everything on the fourth floor (that’s Chado Ralph Rucci territory, people!) before heading upstairs to enjoy the vocal stylings of Isaac Mizrahi and the Ben Waltzer Trio, not to mention the excellent display of John Derian decoupage.

  • Designer Lela Rose triumphed in a Top Chef-style cook-off that pitted her against the likes of Peter Som and Gilles Mendel.

  • Just up the block at Barneys, it was kiln or be kiln, as Jonathan Adler threw pots while Simon Doonan cheered him on.

Video Style Steal: Rihanna & Her Boys “Run This Town,” Street Warrior Style

imageAfter all the relationship drama and Hollywood hype she’s had to deal with in the past year, Rihanna is back — and she’s not coming quietly. In Jay-Z’s latest single “Run This Town,” also featuring Kanye West, RiRi makes it clear that she’s armed and ready for the spotlight, stronger and fiercer than ever. The politically-charged video was filmed in New York’s Fort Totten Park and depicts a chaotic mob revolt, representative of a more literal take on the song’s title. While an exact replication of Rihanna’s video get-ups may send more than a few quirked eyebrows your way, you can take her militia-style costumes as inspiration in perfecting your own look as a style soldier. Click “See Video” to watch Jay, Rihanna, & Kanye’s video revolution, then check the slideshow to see some Rihanna-inspired pieces for your shopping pleasure. Photo Credit: MTV.com

Hack2Work Highlight: Core77’s Guide to Unconventional Office Plants, by Lisa Smith

    blog_highlight_H2W.jpg

Want to green up your office environment (the other kind of green) but afraid that you’re just going to kill any plants you bring in? Check out Core77’s Guide to Unconventional Office Plants, by Lisa Smith, part of our Hack2Work Special. Here’s a clipping:

For your naturally-lit but dim office

If your office is lit only dimly by natural light, and you hate turning on the overhead lights unless you absolutely have to, the Mother-In-Law’s Tongue (Sansevieria trifasciata) is an excellent option. Though the young specimens often found in grocery stores appear stumpy, this plant grows to great heights, looking surreal and aquatic with its still, wavy and variegated leaves. It does splendidly in low light, and, as a member of the Agave family, needs very little watering. Soak it once every two to three weeks, letting it drain completely. A word of caution: this plant likes to be rootbound, so don’t transplant it prematurely. Let it grow in the container you bought it in, setting it inside a decorative pot instead of transplanting it. This also helps with watering; take the whole thing out, put it in the sink, and let it drain completely before putting it back.
