Ceci Nest Pas un USB Drive: Kevin Van Aelsts Pipe Dream

(Photo: Kevin Van Aelst)

Sure, you enjoyed Erwin Olaf‘s images of abandoned kitchens and Rob Walker‘s eye-opening look at Latisse (hearing Brooke Shields say “inadequate or not enough lashes” makes us cringe so), but we think the real star of the most recent issue of The New York Times Magazine is Kevin Van Aelst‘s graphic accompaniment to The Medium, the mixed media column penned by Virginia Heffernan. In this week’s installment, New Haven-based Van Aelst whipped up this photo to illustrate Heffernan’s look at how fathers are adapting to the online world. It’s Father Knows Best meets Magritte 2.0. Smokin’.

Paris Hilton Shops At Barney’s In Yumi Kim’s ‘Woori’ Dress

imageParis Hilton was recently photographed at Barneys wearing a very cute strappy green dress and white hot accessories. Regardless of your opinion of the heiress (or if you even have one), you’ve got to admit she looks pretty well put together. And I think I finally understand why celebs like Paris make such a point of dressing up just to go shopping. After all, they do say you should dress for the job you want, and if looking hot and shopping are career goals, then she’s well on her way! As for me, I’ll just settle for owning her dress. It’s the Yumi Kim ‘Woori’ dress in Green Pixie, available on the designer’s e-shop for a surprisingly affordable $210.
What do you think of Paris’ dress? Tell us in comments!

Pulse: a new urban bike concept from Teague

money shot.jpg

Pulse, Teague’s new concept for an urban bike, addresses all the necessities of a standard bike commute. Taking cues from both fixed gears and cafe-racers, Its features include electric turn signals controlled from the handlebars and a luminescent frame that lights up when you need it. We especially love the specialized caged bike pedals–they’re counterweighted to always sit “the right way round,” allowing the rider to benefit from their three-fold increase in efficiency without suffering from having to clip into upside down pedals at every stoplight.

Here’s the pitch from Teague:

150 years of continuous/passionate refinement have resulted in bicycle components that are both ultra efficient and ultra reliable. And yet this passionate perfection hides in plain sight. The power of design is its ability to create (animal) magnetism around compelling ideas in relevant context. Dana Krieger, Industrial designer at Teague presents a tribute to the triangle. A reinterpretation of an icon, which unifies individual components into a coherent statement in tune with contemporary needs (and attitudes). Equal parts gym membership, fashion statement and Kyoto pact contributor–Pulse is a transportation solution in synch with the needs of today’s urban denizen.

James Rosenquist Reveals Jasper Johns, Jokester!

JJohns.jpgWhile it’s difficult to find a photo of the late Robert Rasuchenberg without a puckish grin, Jasper Johns tends to confront cameras with an expression of steely bemusement that stops just short of a glower. We like to think of it as encaustic personified. But don’t mistake Johns’s intensity for humorlessness, notes James Rosenquist in his memoir, Painting Below Zero, due out in October from Knopf. The New York Post‘s Page Six yesterday offered this excerpt from the book in which Rosenquist recounts a delightful Johnsian joke.

While [Johns] was working on a project with Edward Albee, he told me this joke using his high ecclesiastical voice. [He goes]: ‘This turtle was walking along and it was robbed by two snails. The turtle called the police, and when they asked him [what happened], the turtle said, ‘Well I don’t know, everything happened too fast.’ He’s an eccentric.

The 45365 Documentary

45365.jpg

A Grand Jury Award winner at this year’s South by Southwest Film Festival, “45365” documents daily life in rural middle America. Brothers Turner and Bill Ross, both natives of Sidney, Ohio (the town bearing the eponymous postal code), filmed over the course of nine months, chronicling the activities and relationships of a variety of town residents.

Presented from the perspective of a passive, patient observer, the classic vérité style offers viewers the opportunity to form their own impressions of the community. From high school football and trick-or-treating to an election campaign and the county fair, 45365’s images will resonate with anyone familiar with the Midwest or life in any small town, for that matter.

Running through 6 August 2008, SnagFilms is screening “45365” online as part of its Summerfest Film Series. Check out the trailer below below.
