It’s controlled via an app and a completed transaction is signified by sound.

The details below are from Fuseproject:

Mobile payment is changing commerce and creating new and easy social interactions around commerce. When PayPal approached fuseproject with an idea to facilitate real world payments, the prospect of creating a physical product and new brand for the e-commerce pioneer was a tantalising design challenge. PayPal and fuseproject’s brand and design team partnered on the expression of this new experience through all interaction points, from naming to packaging, sound and device, web and communication.

The leader in online payment, PayPal, is moving to face-to-face transactions and will bring the ease and comfort of their online platform to the real world. We named it PayPal “Here” to highlight its physical presence and anywhere-anytime possibilities.

PayPal Here by Fuseproject

Most payment transactions are disconnected and confusing, with Paypal Here we sought to create an ecosystem where all elements are clear, simple, consistent and a pleasure to use. The Here logo, iconography, packaging and device follow an arrow-like form that references the physical world where payments happen one-on-one, and also the virtual cloud world that enables these new forms of payments.

The arrow is an ancient symbol that shows something being done in the here and now, and became the inspiration for the shape of the of the product, logo, web, graphics, naming and application sound design. In the PayPal Here experience the arrow also represents easy payment. It expresses how each swipe sends your transaction onward to the cloud.

PayPal Here by Fuseproject

Functionally a large card stripe reader dictated the wide base of the arrow, while the offset surface layer on the card reader easily identifies the credit card swiping track for the user. The front triangle is also an innovative drop down lock that prevents swivel or pivot when one swipes a card. The width of the device track fits perfectly on a smartphone while ensuring enough of the card is read for a successful transaction every time. The product and application experience is further enhanced by sound design when the swiper is inserted in a phone, or when a transaction is complete.

The Here shipper is a smart corrugated triangular box, made of a recycled corrugated material that insures robustness and flexibility when sent through the mail to customers. It includes an iconic Here sticker that becomes a recognisable icon for the Here service.

PayPal Here does more than accept payments – through its distinct design and brand ecosystem, it serves as a brand flag for PayPal in the everyday real world.

UP by Yves Behar and Jawbone

Here are some more details from Jawbone:

Jawbone, a leading innovator of products and services for the mobile lifestyle, today unveiled UPTM, a revolutionary system that consists of a small wristband and an engaging App for iPhone and iPod touch that work together to track your daily activity, sleep patterns, and eating habits helping you live a healthier life. UP, originally previewed at TED Global, also integrates a social experience and open content platform to motivate you with personal and team challenges tailored to help you achieve your goals.

Global health is on a disturbing and rapid decline: chronic lifestyle induced conditions such as heart disease, certain forms of cancer, and diabetes are now the leading cause of death in the US and many other parts of the world. The World Economic Forum predicts the global costs of these non-communicable diseases will reach a staggering £30 trillion over the next 20 years. Research shows that simply moving more, improving sleep quality and eating healthier can help prevent most of these lifestyle diseases, yet lasting behavior change is often difficult to achieve. Further studies have however shown that when people are aware of and engaged in their health and can stay consistently involved, they are indeed able to become healthier.

“As the global health crisis mounted, we felt a strong sense of responsibility to see if we could leverage our resources, talents, and ecosystem to try and help make a difference,” said Hosain Rahman, Jawbone CEO and Founder. “UP is Jawbone’s first step in giving people tools to become engaged as consumers of their own health. It’s a complete system designed to integrate seamlessly into one’s total lifestyle, 24 hours a day, not just the few times a week people may work out. We integrated MotionX® with our expertise in building sophisticated technology into small packages, which enabled us to craft a wearable and power-efficient band that beautifully disappears onto your body. And thanks to the success and adoption of the iPhone, millions of users already have beautiful displays and robust computing platforms in their pocket. We harness that amazing display with a fun, engaging iPhone app to bring the band to life. The result is a product experience that you will actually wear and love to keep using.”

UP by Jawbone empowers people to live a healthier life in three key ways: Measure, Engage, and Act.

MEASURE YOUR DAILY PROGRESS

One of the most basic problems in accurately tracking activity is that the sensing device must be on you 24/7 in a form factor that you won’t forget, lose, or dislike wearing. The UP wristband features a sophisticated motion-tracking engine in an attractive, durable, and water-resistant design that seamlessly and unobtrusively integrates into all your daily activities and errands – in the gym, on the trail, with a cocktail dress or business suit, and even in the shower.

“The MotionX® engine inside the UP band is the result of years of technology development and innovation. MotionX is both extremely accurate and power-efficient, which is critical in delivering a 24/7 product experience small enough to wear,” said Philippe Kahn, CEO and founder of Fullpower, developer of the MotionX technology.

The UP App for iPhone ties the experience together by presenting a complete, holistic view of your health. With the “Me” screen, you can get a quick snapshot of your daily activity, how you are sleeping, and what you are eating, while the “Lifeline” feature reveals all of your prior activities (eat, sleep, move) on a continuous timeline. This unique and powerful interface allows you to see your health activity as it relates to each other over time with a simple swipe of your finger.

UP by Jawbone (wristband + App) helps you measure:

  • Activity – The band automatically measures and stores all aspects of your activity: steps, calories burned, distance, pace, and active versus inactive time throughout the day
  • Sleep – The UP band’s sophisticated motion engine automatically tracks all aspects of your sleep including hours slept, time to fall asleep, phases of sleep (deep versus light) and overall sleep quality.
  • Eat – Capturing your meals in a photo journal is as easy as taking a photo with your iPhone or iPod touch. UP tracks where you’re eating, when you’ve eaten, and even asks how you feel after you’ve had time to digest your meal making it an easy way to identify how different foods affect your body.

ENGAGE WITH YOUR FRIENDS

UP helps you stay engaged in reaching your health goals through a collection of friends and people you choose known as your “Team”. Based on the concept of reciprocal motivation, the Team structure creates an environment where individual achievements can be shared with all members so they can cheer on, motivate or compete against their Team. The Team view gives you a snapshot of how each member is progressing towards their personal goals.

The UP App also features a unique Feed screen which gives you an up to date stream of information about all the things you and your friends are doing with respect to your health.

With respect to sharing information and privacy, UP gives you easy-to-use and complete control over the data you want to share with your Team and others. You choose whether or not you want to share at all, if you want to share some things and not others or if you want to share everything – it is totally up to you.

NUDGED INTO ACTION

Throughout your day, UP subtly nudges you into action. It starts with the silent vibration alarm built into the UP band that wakes you at the best moment in your natural sleep cycle so that you get up feeling as refreshed as possible. Similarly, you can set Get Up and Move reminders that subtly vibrates the UP band to alert you when you’ve been inactive after a time period you specify – it’s an easy way to remember to keep moving.

Another unique feature of the UP system is the notion of health challenges. Challenges are a simple way to discover and learn about health activities. They help you create a personalized plan of action to start living healthier by giving you a number of options to stay engaged and motivated to action. Challenges can be individual, competitive, or collaborative across any combination of the three categories: eat, sleep, and move. Built on an open platform, any member in the UP community can create a challenge for their team. Additionally, UP members can join challenges from an ever-growing list of health professionals and organizations through the UP community.

“We think the magnitude of this health epidemic requires an entire community to affect real change and we are delighted to partner with leading innovators. There are so many great folks working on so many great ideas that we created our system as an open platform enabling health experts to connect with individuals in fun, engaging ways that have never been possible before,” continued Rahman. “We want users to find programs and challenges created by experts that are just right for them.”

Jawbone has teamed up with the DailyFeats and GE Healthymagination to create a variety of challenges UP users can sign up for at launch.

AVAILABLE ON NOVEMBER 6

The UP band comes in three sizes (small, medium, large) and seven colors (Dark Black, Dark Brown, Dark Red, Bright White, Bright Silver, Bright Red, Bright Blue) and will be available for £79.99 at Jawbone.com and Apple retailers from November 17th. From January, it will also be available through O2 both online and in store.

The UP by Jawbone App is available today for free from the App Store on your iPhone. The UP wristband is required for the app.

Talamanca Cocoa by fuseproject

Talamanca Cocoa by fuseproject

San Francisco designers fuseproject have designed packaging and a grating tool for hardened pure cacao, which is farmed among the natural ecosystem of the Costa Rican rainforest.

Talamanca Cocoa by fuseproject

Called Talamanca Cocoa, the product is packaged in hessian bags and has a grater that hooks onto the side of a mug for making hot cacao.

Here’s some more information from the designers:

The Nature Conservancy Talamanca Cocoa

In Costa Rica, the Bribri women of Talamanca are making organic cacao and chocolate. Unlike monoculture farming, their cacao plants grow in the natural ecosystem, surrounded within rich biodiversity, and conserve the nature and land they inhabit… As their cocoa farms expand, so does the conservation of native rainforest. Their main product is ground cacao patties, which capture the essence of their production. Hockey-puck in size and formed by hand, they are 100% cacao – no sugar added – and the only ingredient needed to make the wonderful hot cacao drink.

This cacao patty could be a great opportunity, but it needed a design effort to showcase the product – from packaging and storing the cacao, to brewing hot cacao, while making the entire experience and process ceremonial.

We created a product ecosystem which included a logo, resalable packaging (inspired by the burlap sacs used to store raw cacao beans made locally, natural and biodegradable, reusable, organic), and an accessory tool used to break-down the hardened patties and brew the hot cacao drink.

The tool is custom built to grate the cacao and then to stir the hot cocoa drink. A built-in hook allows the tool to hang on the rim of a mug before and after use, and it self-cleans as it brews.

Our hope is project that this will bring awareness to the positivity of organic cocoa production, as well as entice and educate viewers. Whether they be consumers or partners, at the end of the day this effort tells a story: organic cacao farming saves rainforest.

AE+Y Mobile Phone by Yves Behar for Æsir

+YvesBehar Mobile Phone by Yves Behar for Æsir

San Francisco designer Yves Behar has designed the inaugural product from new Danish mobile phone brand Æsir.

+YvesBehar Mobile Phone by Yves Behar for Æsir

The design reacts against the trend for smart phones and features staggered square buttons.

+YvesBehar Mobile Phone by Yves Behar for Æsir

Called AE+Y, the design is the first in Æsir’s a series of collaborations with selected designers.

+YvesBehar Mobile Phone by Yves Behar for Æsir

The Copenhagen-based brand was founded by Thomas Møller Jensen with Jens Martin Skibsted and Mathias Rajani.

The AE+Y phone comes in gold or stainless steel and costs more than €7000.

Here are some more details from Æsir:

The AE+Y Mobile Phone by Æsir and Yves Béhar

Danish Company Takes Mobile Phone Design to the Next Level

Æsir, a new Copenhagen-based, design-focused mobile phone company is challenging some of the world’s leading designers to bring fresh thought to mobile phone design. Its inaugural phone, the AE+Y, created by Yves Béhar, is launching in Spring 2011 followed by ongoing collaborations with a spectrum of visionary designers that will see further Æsir editions introduced.

Danish entrepreneur, Thomas Møller Jensen, founded Æsir in 2007 after reading a newspaper article which questioned why no one had succeeded in bringing strong industrial design to the mobile handset market. Armed with an appreciation for design, an interest in technology and an entrepreneurial spirit, Jensen set out to address the void.

The resulting company, Æsir Copenhagen, tasks individually selected designers to rethink mobile phone design. Æsir then assembles a bespoke team of technicians, engineers, craftsmen and material specialists to bring each design to life, in some cases utilising techniques which have not before been applied to the manufacture of mobile phones.

The word, Æsir, a Nordic term, describes the collective group of principle gods of Norse mythology, each with their individual strengths and characteristics. In much the same way, Æsir the company has been established by a group of Danish design enthusiasts, who assemble a diverse team of experts that possess the specialised skills that are required to build each Æsir edition.

“Æsir asks the designer to design the mobile phone they want to see in the marketplace and then finds the most specialised experts around the world who share our values and appreciate our curated approach to work with us. We have created a new visual, audio and tactile world for consumers. It’s been hard work, but very rewarding,” says Thomas Møller Jensen.

Multi-award-winning industrial designer Yves Béhar is the first designer to collaborate with Æsir and has created the AE+Y phone. Yves is principal and founder of fuseproject, the San Francisco and New York-based integrated design agency, which for over 10 years has become world-renowned for pushing the boundaries of technology and design, and its game-changing projects in areas as diverse as technology, furniture, sports, lifestyle and fashion. This is the first mobile phone Yves has designed.

Explaining the AE+Y, Yves says: “With the Æsir phone, I wanted to show an alternative to the sea of smartphones and their deluge of features. In an age when the industry seems to think that phones aren’t for speaking anymore, I wanted to focus on the idea of voice, clarity and simplicity.”

Yves adds: “The central tenet behind the AE+Y is to literally ‘craft’ the visual details, craft the functional tactility, and craft the user interface. This level of resolution for every touch point was achieved using a European-centric approach to manufacturing, assembly and design, partnering with the best makers in Switzerland, France and the Netherlands. The AE+Y champions the idea of craftsmanship in an age that’s obsessed with more and making last year’s products obsolete. Instead, we propose better and long-lasting as our starting criteria.” The AE+Y goes on sale in Spring 2011. It will be made in a limited volume and will cost upwards of 7000 Euros.

Jensen says of the design of the AE+Y: “We selected Yves based on his understanding of technology, his humanistic approach and his emphasis on storytelling through design. The +YvesBéhar reflects the harmony Yves strikes between a focus on the user experience and application of high standards of craftsmanship. Yves has driven us to create something beautifully new.”

And the AE+Y is indeed new and beautiful. The metal work, in gold or stainless steel, has been made by French and Swiss specialists who have worked on complex components for some of the world’s most sought-after luxury watches. Their unrivalled expertise in making micro-tools combined with a significant amount of hand assembly was essential in delivering the ultra-high level of precision required for all the metal keys to line up perfectly.

Similarly, the sapphire crystal screen, with its patented ultra- resilient coating has been developed to produce a display with the highest clarity even in direct sunlight. The Dutch-made ceramic casing has been specially created for the AE+Y to deliver a highly durable, scratch-resistant, high-gloss finish. The seamless interface between the sapphire crystal screen and the ceramic casing is the first of its kind and again leverages and innovates techniques used in the Swiss watchmaking industry. Each handset will be assembled and finished in France.

The sound chamber within the AE+Y phone has been specially engineered for superior voice and acoustic performance with authenticity and crisp clarity. With ringtones specially commissioned by the ‘master of the upright bass’, Danish- Vietnamese musician Chris Minh Doky, the AE+Y sound delivers an entirely new experience.

Almost from the outset, Æsir has worked closely with Keep, a London-based brand development and marketing agency that works with companies in the worlds of art, design and luxury. Æsir has also worked with London-based Tom Hingston Studio, which has developed a custom font and range of bespoke icons which will be used across the whole Æsir brand.

The AE+Y sets the standard for future Æsir editions, which will see the company partnering with additional thought-provoking designers to further explore mobile phone design and manufacturing techniques.

Thomas Møller Jensen concludes, “The challenge was to create something that is new within the industry; something that will be used and enjoyed by its owners for years to come and something that causes people to think differently about their phones and phone design. The AE+Y meets that challenge and we are all extremely pleased with the result.”

Peel Fruit by Yves Behar

Peel Fruit by Yves Behar

San Francisco designer Yves Behar of Fuseproject has designed a product that allows users to control their TV from their iPhone.

Peel Fruit by Yves Behar

Called Peel, the system features a free app for searching TV listings, and a small piece of hardware, called Peel Fruit, to relay the signal from phone to TV.

Here are some more details from Fuseproject:

The way we search for content on TV has not changed since its inception – we channel surf. Not only do satellite and digital cable guides feel antiquated, but the problem is magnified by the hundreds of channels we now have to search for a program.

Peel came to fuseproject in late 2009 with an idea – to revolutionize the way we watch and discover content on TV. Peel is one of those rare implementations of technology that solves a problem in such a way that the user can instantly and entirely forget that the problem has ever existed. Using a free iPhone app (and soon Android) and the Peel Fruit hardware, users can click on a movie or show, search by name, or consult their viewing habits learned by the system.

The brand principle is to “peel back” the tedious layers of the channel guide and the monotony of channel surfing. This idea is used in the design of the brand, products and UI as an intuitive product ecosystem. Not only does Peel set itself apart in its revolutionary functionality, but the design aesthetics are different than standard TV equipment. In order to relay the phone signal to the TV and other AV equipment, the Peel Fruit is the centerpiece of the product system and is designed to be displayed and celebrated. Each friendly peripheral is a simplified fruit (Pear, Apple, Orange) set at a slight angle, with the lower portion functioning as a large IR window that relays the phone signal to the TV. Instead of being yet another remote, with scores or buttons and a 200 page manual; Peel is fun and friendly, and it keeps its cutting edge technology nearly invisible. Once Peel is hooked up and the App has been downloaded to an iPhone, iTouch or iPad – there is a true “ah ha!” moment when users find what they want painlessly.

Peel is a fuseproject design venture portfolio company. In this type of deep & collaborative partnership, fuseproject works on all facets of the company’s business, providing an effective design-driven strategy for success from very early days through launch. Free from the encumbrances of a typical consulting relationship, we balance roles of creative partner and investor, and build a solid brand foundation.
