The Wind Portal in Paper

BlackBerry Windows Phone Pro

We all know that BlackBerry needs to either hitch a ride with someone like Microsoft or come out with a smashing BB OS 10. If we take on the first scenario and pair BB with Microsoft, then RIM’s baby is a magnificent Windows Phone Pro, which has the possibility of including all things good from BB tools and MS Office apps. The potential of the BlackBerry Wind concept sounds too good, imagine the ultimate professional phone bearing the security and agility of BlackBerry along with the competence of MS Office.

As the designer explains, this combination will be more attractive for developers, increasing significantly the number application proposed on the now called Windows Phone Store. BlackBerry Wind signifies “Wind of change” and the new OS “WINDows” and exemplifies elegance and sobriety.

The chamfered corners (On the top and the bottom) give a swift recognition of the product, and the wide polycarbonate line on the back (Which comes on the front to highlight the speaker and create the Windows Phone OS key) increases the identity of the smartphone.

Backyard Wind Energy

As my airplane circled over Amsterdam, one of the most notable aspects of the landscape below was the number of modernized windmills dotting the fields. So when I came across the Harmowind project, it got me thinking, why can’t we adapt to this free source of energy and become self-reliant? This particular windmill has been specifically designed for household use and can be installed in the backyard. It has the capacity to generate enough power for a single-family unit to use.

As the designer explains, “Unlike the horizontal axis wind turbines, Harmowind is independent of wind direction. It can make use of wind turbulence to generate power, which happens very often in built-up area. Harmowind runs extreme quietly thanks to not only the vertical axis, but also the small rotation radius.”

  • Wind speed is proved to be the most important element (among wind speed, investment costs, operating cost, interest rate and useful life) in reducing or increasing the electricity production cost.
  • As the wind is stronger higher up, and a wind turbine with a height of max. 10 m is allowed to be built without authorization in most states of Germany; it was designed as 10 m high.
  • Double-blade-rotor decreases (compared to 3-blade-rotor) the demand on the natural frequency of the mast.
  • A helix-form reduces the unevenness of aerodynamic force.
  • The shadow effect of the wind turbine has also been a problem when its built near a house.
  • The blade design was aimed also to minimize the shadow and to weaken disco-effect during the rotation.
  • In consideration of min. 20 years of service life, the design has tried to present the feeling of harmonious, timeless, long lasting functionality.

Summer Gig

Gossamer Albatross

For this upcoming summer, the midway point of my two years of graduate school, I’ll be working near Los Angeles at a company that is probably best known for designing and building the Gossamer Condor and the Gossamer Albatross (shown above). They are human-powered flight vehicles masterminded by the late, great Dr. Paul B. MacCready and made history by successfully completing a fully human-powered flight across the English Channel on June 12, 1979. They’re not doing human-powered flight anymore, but they are getting into some pretty amazing wind-power systems, solar vehicles (including solar flight vehicles), unmanned aerial systems, and electric vehicles and charging systems. Should be a good time!
